Solomon's Temple

This temple is designed following the description found at I Kings and 2 Chronicles. There are a few changes to the general outline of the temple as depicted by the society and by other renditions of Solomon’s temple. The porch for instance is only 20 cubits high, where as many go for a 120 cubit high porch. Why the difference? 2 Chronicles 3:4 states: “The porch in front was 20 cubits long, corresponding to the width of the house, and its height was 120; and he overlaid it inside with pure gold.” Throughout the description of the temple, where ever dimensions are mentioned the term “Cubits” is used. All except this one verse where the translated term is “120” and no mention of “Cubits.” A footnote in our new Bible states regarding the height of the porch: “An uncertain dimension.” However in the Reference Bible the footnote reads: “A hundred and twenty,” MLXXB; LXXASy, “twenty cubits.” By a transposition of the letters of the Heb. word for “a hundred” it would read “cubits,” to produce the expression “twenty cubits.” The Hebrew word for Cubit uses the hebrew characters for "hma" and the Hebrew word for 100 uses the hebrew characters for "ham." As you can see the same Hebrew characters are used but with the first two characters (reading right to left) are swapped around. A possible scribal error. So the sentence can be translated as “20 cubits” or “120.” As the term cubits is used everywhere else except for this one sentence I have opted for a porch of 20 Cubits. It is remotely possible that the word cubit was left out by mistake, but this is unlikely as the number of letters in each sentence were counted by the scribes to avoid such errors. If you look carefully at the model you will see that wooden posts separate the Porch, Holy, and Most Holy, from the side buildings. This is to keep in line with 1 Kings 6:6 “ . . .so that nothing was attached to the walls of the house” and 1 Kings 6:10 “. . .He built the side chambers all around the house, each five cubits high, and they were joined to the house by cedar timbers.” The side chambers were separated from the main temple building by wooden timbers. The width of each level to the side rooms was 5 cubits at the bottom level, 6 cubits at the middle level and 7 cubits at the top level. Thus the side rooms would have a staggered appearance. This is in line with 1 Kings 6:6 “The lowest level of the side chambers was five cubits wide, the middle level was six cubits wide, and the third level was seven cubits wide, for he made offsets all around the house, so that nothing was attached to the walls of the house.” The two copper pillars Boaz and Jachin I have coloured green as no doubt the copper would have oxidized leaving a layer of verdigris. In essence then, this is another version of how Solomon’s temple may have appeared.

Just over two years ago, I wrote a post, reporting on a 3D model of Solomon’s Temple, created by Daniel Smith. Last week he told me that he had just released a new video, which is called “Solomon’s Temple Explained”. He is happy for me to share it with you.

Solomon’s Temple stood in Jerusalem for almost 400 years. It was the crown jewel of Jerusalem, and the center of worship to the Lord. Understanding the significance of its location, history, and design can greatly add to one’s reverence for one of the most holy places in the world,

Special thanks to: Brian Olson for the beautiful 3D Solomon Temple renders. Michael Lyon for his design elements and feedback of the Temple model. Leen Ritmeyer for his excellent books and personal help. Cantorum Chamber Choir for allowing me to use their music.

This excellent new video begins by explaining the topography of Jerusalem and how the City of Solomon’s location was determined by the surrounding mountains and valleys. The topographical and biblical importance of Mount Moriah is explained.

The video includes a section on the Tabernacle which served as a blueprint for Solomon’s Temple. After showing that Solomon built the Temple on Mount Moriah where David previously had purchased the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite, he goes back to the Book of Genesis and explains the symbology of the events that took place in the Garden of Eden.

The video then shows that Solomon’s Temple replicated the same three-level progression as found in the Garden of Eden and the Tabernacle. The ultimate aim of its design was to show how people could return to God. The video ends with the Sacrifice of Christ.

See an amazing model of Jerusalem from the time of Jesus!

An almost 3,000-year old grand yet lost temple or a just a figment of religious fable? Solomon’s Temple or the First Jewish Temple has raised debates for centuries over its mere existence. According to Biblical traditions, the massive religious structure mentioned with incredible details was the centerpiece of the Jerusalem sanctuary and was erected on the humongous man-made plateau by around 960 BC (according to conventional sources). Taking the slightly more ‘sensational’ route, Solomon’s Temple was also the chosen building that supposedly housed the Ark of the Covenant. Unfortunately, archaeology has still not been able to reveal much about the presence of any such ancient monument. Moreover, in our current circumstances, political affairs play a big role – with the Temple Mount (the aforementioned man-made plateau) ‘also’ hosting what is considered as the oldest extant Islamic architectural specimen of the world – the Dome of the Rock (or Qubbat As-Sakhrah).

Originally built during the reign of the Umayyad Caliphs (that correspond to Islamic golden age in arts and architecture), the Dome of the Rock was constructed upon the Temple Mount, with the ‘rock’ on the site pertaining to the revered scene of Prophet Mohammad’s Night Ride, when he supposedly ascended heaven to have an audience with God. Suffice it to say, Muslims consider the site as sacred, with the ‘rock’ still being displayed inside the Qubbat As-Sakhrah shrine. On the other hand, people of Jewish faith also consider the Temple Mount as a venerable site, due to its intrinsic connection with the fabled Solomon’s Temple (along with the evidenced Second Jewish Temple).

Now in terms of historical evidence for Solomon’s Temple, one major factor that has acted as a detriment relates to the political climate in Jerusalem. This ancient city had always dealt with complexity in terms of politics, and its historical record aptly makes it clear – since ancient times, Jerusalem had been besieged 23 times, attacked 52 times, changed hands (between ruling factions) 44 times and had been destroyed and rebuilt twice! However, by 12th century AD, the Temple Mount has been governed by a special Islamic religious authority called the Waqf, originally installed by Saladin. Now, while currently, Israeli authorities share security responsibilities with the Waqf, people of other faith (including Jewish) are still banned from praying inside the holy precinct.

Such limitation of activities also stretches to archaeology. As a consequence, researchers and historians have not been able to fully analyze the possible remains or pieces of evidence on the Temple Mount that might provide clues to the existence of the Solomon’s Temple. Interestingly enough, back in 2007, employees of the Waqf Muslim religious trust came across artifacts (including ceramic bowl rims, bases, and body sherds along with remains of juglets) during their routine maintenance on the revered site. On later assessment, these objects were judged to date from the eighth to sixth centuries BC. It should also be noted that as opposed to conventional Biblical sources, Seder Olam Rabbah (a 2nd-century AD Hebrew language chronology) places the date of construction of the Solomon’s Temple much later in 822 BC.

Furthermore, according to Biblical Archaeology Society –

Fortunately, several Iron Age temples discovered throughout the Levant bear a striking resemblance to the Temple of King Solomon in the Bible. Through these remains, we gain extraordinary insight into the architectural grandeur of the building that stood atop Jerusalem’s Temple Mount nearly 3,000 years ago.

As reported by archaeologist John Monson in the pages of BAR, the closest known parallel to the Temple of King Solomon is the ’Ain Dara temple in northern Syria. Nearly every aspect of the ’Ain Dara temple—its age, its size, its plan, its decoration—parallels the vivid description of the Temple of King Solomon in the Bible. In fact, Monson identified more than 30 architectural and decorative elements shared by the ’Ain Dara structure and the Jerusalem Temple described by the Biblical writers.

In any case, the ultimate purpose of this article is NOT to debate the existence (or lack thereof) of the Solomon’s Temple. We rather wanted to demonstrate how the Temple of King Solomon might have looked like if it was actually constructed in accordance with the measurements mentioned in Biblical sources. In the video below, Daniel Smith has concocted a superb 3D animation that demonstrates both the exterior and interior of the religious structure. All his virtual measurements were taken in accordance with the figures mentioned in 1 Kings 6-7. As Smith said –

Visualize Solomon’s temple in all its glory in this amazing 3D animation based on scriptural, archaeological, and historical research. Solomon’s temple stood in Jerusalem for almost 400 years, and was the center of worship for all of Israel.

In case you are interested in the commentary about the measurements used for the Solomon’s Temple, you can take a gander at the animated video presented below, made by Smith back in 2016 (using  SketchUp 2016) –

And finally, if you are interested in the religious significance of the famed Solomon’s Temple, especially when it came to Biblical references, you can check out the extended animated video presented below, once again made by Daniel Smith –

Taking hold of the trunk, he ran several times along the hot slit, feeling for a hole under the pubic bone. Feeling the right direction, Lera herself began to lower herself onto a solid dagger. The vagina did not immediately take all its power. The inflated head with difficulty pushed the poured walls apart, dragging the ribbed barrel along with it.
