Looking at buying a used bobcat - any help?

If it runs good and the hydraulics work well, it is well worth the price. Those are the machines that Bobcat built their current reputation on, and if the hour meter is correct, it's got a lot of life left. If it were me, I would run it good and hard (2/3's throttle or more) for at least 30 minutes. That way everything has time to heat up, leak, slip, overheat, etc.

Another thing to keep in mind is that everything for skidsteers is expensive. Tires are as much as offroad tires, hydraulic drive motors are $$$$, attachments are $400-4000, so be aware of what you are getting yourself into. With that said, I've got a New Holland L555 with 3300hrs, and its a great little machine. If the one your looking at doesn't have a 4n1 bucket, you should consider that as one of the first purchases down the line. It allows you to grab rocks, tree trunks, and brush. Also you can scoop more dirt and smooth it better once you are used to it.

Here's a website with info on various machines:

and it looks like a Bobcat 632 came with a Ford Gas motor:

Bobcat skid steer loader

Bobcat began at Keller Manufacturing in Rothsay, Minnesota. Keller custom built a compact loader for a local turkey farmer in 1957. After showing off the loader at the Minnesota State Fair, a partnership was reached between Keller and Melore Manufacturing to mass produce the loaders. The name "Bobcat" was first used in 1964 with the M440 model, and has since become synonymous with skid-steer loaders.

1994 Bobcat 543B Skid Steer,

NE IndianaLocal Deere dealer has a Bobcat 553. 06 model with 363 hrs. Looks immaculate except for staining on front part of boom, maybe from sticking out of a barn catching roof runoff. They are asking $15500. Good, bad, ugly on this size unit. Will fit under bank barn to scrape foor. T300 don't fit.

Central Ne.my first Skidsteer was a Bobcat 653. just a bit bigger than a 553. For my use it didn't work very well. I couldn't carry round bales because of the short wheel base. But for a tight spot use the 553 would work well. I traded my 653 for a S250 which for my use works much better. I think Bobcat has a good product. I couldn't be without a skidsteeer now.

South Texas

Polar Bear,
I've been using a Bobcat (actually more of a BobKitty) 540 for nearly 15 years.  First owner was Forest Service, I'm the second with a couple thousand hours on it now.
In all, a great machine.  I see the 553 is a 25 HP diesel whereas mine has a Kohler Model 582 gas engine with around 24 HP.  Specs for max load are about the same and no, you can't lift a 1500 lb round bale.  You can slide it, though.
I still find it amazing how much work can be gotten from 25 HP.  I use it nearly every day.  Have a post hole auger, tine bucket with single-cylinder grapple and small backhoe that can be run from the Bobcat's seat.  I would love to buy the 4 in 1 bucket but it's not available in 48".  The grapple is fantastic for hauling brush--just nothing like it.
  I'd definitely recommend that 553.
Hope this helps.  Stetts

MNI have an older 543b and overall it is a good little machine, very handy in tight spots. I do have a bigger loader tractor so I don't move tons of gravel or bales etc with it. I am having a minor issue with it not getting fuel after sitting for a time. Maybe the newer ones are better but mine draws fuel out of the top of the tank which seems backwards to me since the entire tank is over the engine. If you have a big one and just need to get tight spots it sure beats a shovel!

South Texas

Danwarner,
Last year mine wouldn't run right.  Finally quit.  Yours seems to have the same fuel feeding system mine has, meaning it comes out the top of the tank.
In my case, I finally chased the problem to the tube from the fitting at the top of the tank to the feed hose that drags along the bottom.  (It has a small strainer at the end of it.)  That hose got old and eventually had little cracks that got progressively worse.  Yes, the machine ran progressively worse right along with it, considering the air that was being sucked into the carburetor along with some gas.  Replaced the hose and all was well.
I took out the tank because I didn't know where the problem was or how it was assembled.  You likely wouldn 't have to remove the tank.
Hope this helps.  Stetts

NE IndianaThanks guys. Does it have a standard quick attach or is it all on its own? it looked smaller than the T300 hookup. I allready have an assortment of attaqchments.

BC, Canada553 is a great machine. We have one with 6000 plus hours and it is still going. It is used to scrape the barn for a couple hours ever day. Ours had some minor issue with the 'traction-lock' setup but that got bypassed. Standard quick attach and all the other bobcats.

1994 Bobcat 543B Skid Steer,

Do you know the feeling of awkward shyness that suddenly envelops you when you try to pronounce the first, generally meaningless first words. And the accidental intersection of gazes, when an electric spark jumps between you and the object of your lust, like a flash of lightning.

After which you realize that you are ready to follow him even to the ends of the earth and this is what you have been looking for and waiting for so long and persistently all your life.
