Great Car — its a great first car because its easy to work with. The one i have is a good car but i cant get the thing to start i need help. i can turn it over and the belts and pullys turn over with no problem. i do have gas and oils yet it still will not turn over and run. i have a suspision it is the carburetor but i do not see any problems with it unless you have to have the oil bath top on when you turn it over. any help would be great

Pros: 70s and 71s vw bug body parts are compatible with this year

Cons: interior side panels get weak slowly

Fun Car To Drive And Get Stares And Thumbs Up From Pedestrians And Other Drivers. — Bought this car in California in 1985 as a spare vehicle. Original color was kind of a dark tan but it was kind of ugly. Had it painted with an excellent paint job in 1989. It now is the color of Pistachio ice cream (Light Green) and really stands out. Paint is still good after 23 years of California, Chicago, and Florida weather.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: What can you say about a 43 year old car? Best looking old VW in the area

A Beautiful Bug! — The VW Bug is an eye catcher and great conversational piece. It is excellent on gas mileage and very capable of getting you to your favorite beach and up mountains. I have enjoyed simply going out on Sunday drives to my favorite coffee cafe shop or favorite parks for a picnic.

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: Great weekend fun car and for daily commute car to work or school! Very low maintenance!

Simply The Best Car Ever Made — simple easy to work on. extensive aftermarket support. great people. the performance is, well, terrible compaired to today's cars. altho, with the aftermarket support, these cars can be made to outperform most of the top sports cars. everybody either has owned a vw, or knows somebody that has, so the car is as much a conversation piece as transportation

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: nothing like driving the most recognized car in the world

Cons: more maintenance to keep running.

The "modern" Beetle :-) — New project for 2009, a 1969 Beetle. It's a 1300 model, with a dechromed body, and in a good general shape for its age... The chassis will be rebuilt, new colour, updated interior, and a prepared engine. I want this car to be my daily driver, a classic California look from the late 70s.

Pros: It's a Volkswagen...

Cons: ... it doesn't run yet!

Vw Bug! — Bought this car in 2002 and it cost £600 - Approx £8k later and this is it now! Pic 1 shows the front suspension wound right down and narrowed beam, 20mm ground clearance!!! Images 2 shows rear wheels wound right down too! Spent 2k on the interior seats from Bernard Newbury and the wheels cost £1k... oh and its now on its 3rd engine (they keep blowing up on me!!) My baby, only comes out on sunny days hence its only done 30miles this year!!

Pros: Appearance and simplicity

Cons: MPG sucks - about 20mpg!!!

Classic Bug

1969 Volkswagen Beetle -

Savannah Beige - 1500cc Inline4 - 4 Speed Manual - Classic Bug -

(Please note: If you happen to be viewing this vehicle on a website other than our main website, it's possible that only some of our many photographs of this car are not presented due to website limitations. To be sure you access all the photographs, please go to our main website: Garage Kept Motors.)

The 1969 Beetle 1300 shown here in Savannah Beige over beige vinyl is a nice example of a classic Volkswagen. The car has been well maintained through its lifetime and lovingly refreshed without being modified. The result is a very reliable and very drivable classic with power delivered easily through the floor-mounted 4-speed shifter. Too many Beetles have suffered from well intended, but ill advised “updating” that reduced the model's appeal and value. Not here.

The exterior paint has been updated at some point between the time that this Beetle left the factory and now with a beige metallic color somewhere in between the '69 factory colors of Savannah Beige and Fontana Grey. The brightwork, and glass, are in great condition, and period-correct thin-stripe whitewall tires round out the vintage styling of the car. A matching set of fender skirts also come with the car. The engine bay is complete and tidy, and the same is true of the undercarriage. The interior is very tidy, including the condition of the dash. A modern Alpine AM/FM/CD Player and a clock mounted in the steering wheel (of all places) are the only changes made to the inside of the car. A single, characteristically simple chrome highlight runs the width of the dash. Short of an in-person inspection—which we always welcome by appointment—the more than 140 high-definition photos and the brief video available on the Garage Kept Motors site are the best way to gauge the lovely condition of the car.

VW Beetle fans know these cars well. This is a very tidy example of such an iconic and well loved car. We are pleased to have this Beetle here in our showroom, but we don't expect it'll be around long. Be sure to check out all the photos and video on our main website: Garage Kept Motors. Call if interested or e-mail with any questions. Thank you for looking.

    Beetle 1969 volkswagen

For such a low-tech car, the Beetle, at least for a time, offered a decidedly high-tech transmission. In 1968, VW introduced the Automatic Stick Shift semi-automatic transmission option, essentially a regular Beetle four-speed manual with first gear removed, a torque converter added, and a vacuum-operated clutch that disengaged anytime the shifter is touched. Simply move the lever to the desired gate, let go, and get back on the gas, and the system figured out the rest. The technology was shared with Porsche (Sportomatic), but the brazen "Automatic" decklid badging was all VW's.

In our testing, the Automatic Stick Shift (we dubbed it "A.S.S." in our 1968 review) wasn't much slower than the regular Beetle 1500. Its quarter-mile time of 21.1 seconds trailed the stick-shift model's by only 1.3 seconds. The automatic model also added a new double-jointed rear-axle design, modeled after the setup in the VW Microbus. Compared with the Bug's original swing axles, the new suspension greatly enhanced the Beetle's handling.

VW Beetle - Everything You Need to Know - Up to Speed

Doyle Dane Bernbach's iconic advertisements for Volkswagen, starting in 1959, made the advertising agency a legend in its own time and helped Volkswagen of America sell tiny, funny-looking air-cooled cars in vast numbers. The Type 1 Beetle's 1930s design became increasingly dated as the 1960s went on, but the car's cheapness and simplicity kept sales strong all the way through the decade.

Here's a DDB-made magazine advertisement pitching the Beetle as a car you might buy even when you can afford something bigger and more modern.

    Volkswagen of America

Americans had plenty of choices for cheap, reliable new cars in 1969, including the AMC Rambler ($1,998), Toyota Corona ($1,950), Ford Falcon ($2,226), Datsun 510 ($1,896), Plymouth Valiant ($2,307) and Chevrolet Nova ($2,315).

For the brave, there were cheap, unreliable new cars that year, such as the Renault 10 ($1,775), Subaru 360 ($1,300), Austin America ($1,845), Fiat 850 ($1,466), MG Midget ($2,315) and Honda 600 ($1,398). If you wanted to be very, very cheap and still get a car that had a good shot at starting and driving every day, though, you couldn't beat the $1,799 Beetle.

    You will also be interested:

The original Type 1 air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle stayed true to the same design from the beginning of production in 1938 until the final Vocho rolled off the assembly line in Puebla in 2003. VW began selling cars in North America in 1949, with sales numbers becoming very strong a decade later and staying that way throughout the 1960s.

Advertising agency Doyle Dane Bernbach played a huge role in that success, and many of DDB's Volkswagen ads touted the money-saving fact that the Beetle stayed the same (with minor improvements) year after year. Here's a magazine advertisement for the '69 Beetle, which looked nearly identical to the '68 Beetle and the '70 Beetle.

    Volkswagen of America

The Beetle's design was beyond obsolete by 1969, of course, but American car shoppers still bought Beetles for the same reason their grandparents bought the obsolete Model T Ford in 1924: it got the job done, it always ran, and it was dirt cheap. The MSRP on this car came to a mere $1,799 (about $13,070 in 2020 bucks), while a zilch-optioned AMC Rambler cost $1,998 that year.

Crash-safety and emission-control rules (not to mention cheap Japanese subcompacts) doomed the air-cooled Beetle in the United States during the following decade, but 1969 ended up being another great sales year for VW here.
