The Innova 5210 is an impressive entry-level tool. Large, easy to read, 2.8 inch color display displays more than 20 messages. High-end features such as ABS and real-time data are available, with the real-time data feature allowing you to see the readout in real time, while the frozen frame data shows all vehicle information, Bluetooth and WiFi technology allowing you to access manufacturer data, cloud-based databases, and connect to Tech Masters verified fixes.

INNOVA Pro 5210 Bullet Points

  • Design & Build Quality:The 5210 measures about 6″ x 3.5″,The nice, bright color display on the 5210 is almost 3″, The text and data graphs are sharp, although things get a little small when you combine multiple graphs on a single screen. We used the devices inside and in bright sunlight and could see the display with no problems.
  • The Device is Great but the Data is Better: Innova has best-in-class data to help you Find the Problem and Fix the Problem. The 5210 code reader comes with the RepairSolutions2 -- a unique app that gets you the information you need to keep your vehicle on the road. Get verified fixes, find and purchase the exact part required for repair, schedule maintenance, receive technical bulletins, recalls, and more.
  • Code Sequence & Freeze-Frame Data: Whenever a DTC (again, diagnostic trouble code) is triggered, the vehicle saves a snapshot of the engine’s conditions to its internal memory at the time of the event. This is the freeze-frame data that displays on the screen after the first ‘P’ code. That first trouble code displayed on the device is always the highest-priority code and the one that the freeze-frame data on the following screen represents. Subsequent trouble codes, without freeze-frame data, will begin on the third screen if they exist.
  • Easily Scan, Read and Reset Check Engine Lights, ABS(Brake) Codes& More:  Innova’s 5210 OBD2 scanner empowers the home mechanic with its professional-level functionality. This car diagnostic tool not only reads and clears OBD trouble codes it also displays all vehicle information from when a trouble code was triggered. Works on any foreign or domestic 1996 or newer OBD2 car, light truck, SUV, or hybrid vehicle. Supports English, Spanish or French.
  • Live Data Mode: Both the 5210 and 5610 Innova OBD2 scanners let you view and record real-time live data, such as RPMs, temperatures, speed, volts, and more. You can also monitor things like the fuel system and its status in real-time. The live data recording feature is useful for intermittent problems that may not trigger a DTC. You can record about 100 frames of live data. These are essentially screenshots, much like the freeze-frame data that is stored upon a DTC event. You can playback the saved data in a sort-of slide show view (15s per slide) or manually, frame-by-frame.
  • Erasing DTCs: With this device, it’s just the press of a button. When DTCs are erased from the vehicle’s on-board computer, so too is the freeze-frame data and manufacturer-specific enhanced data. Permanent DTCs are not erased and trouble codes may appear again if the problems persist (e.g., if repairs are not made).
  • Know Smog Check Results before State Does: More than just a car check engine light reader, the 5210 OBD2 scan tool also lets you check your emissions status using the red, yellow, and green LEDs to pre-determine whether you’ll be able to pass your smog test. This OBD2 scan tool can also provide trip cycle procedures for completing your smog check.

5.0 out of 5 starsA full-featured diagnostic tool

Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2020

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )

There are some pretty lame reviews her from people who obviously never actually used the tool.

I've had 4 or 5 scanners before this one, and this one is clearly the best of the lot. Recently, some very inexpensive units have come on the market, and for basic tasks, they work well. This one is a little more expensive but has features the others never dreamed of.

First - the basics. If you just want to be able to read and erase trouble codes, simply plug this in, turn on the car, and press the FF/DTC button and it will present you with the code and a description. I suspect that 90% of the users will use this feature 90% of the time and it couldn't be simpler. (Not to say that the interface isn't a little confusing overall - I haven't met a scanner yet that wasn't... so there's room for improvement.)

It does other thing that the current crop of scanners do - let's you monitor a whole slew of live data coming from your engine sensors. You can select whatever items are of most interest and even have them display on a graph.

Some features that stand out over the cheaper units I've used:
Right at the top of the screen are a bunch of icons (and also a red, yellow, green set of LEDs) that give you instant feedback about the state of the various subsystems.
You can download the free companion app which easily pairs to the scanner via Bluetooth. You can use the cleaner phone interface to access a lot of the scanner data (although I don't think it supports the cool live data - but I may have just missed it). If your garage is within range of wi-fi, it can also connect to your wi-fi.

After you tell it how many miles are on your car, and presumably with some input from the sensors, it will give you predictions for which systems are likely to experience problems in the next year!

Now this next feature (which is really cool) I haven't seen firsthand because none of my cars currently have any applicable trouble codes, but apparently, if a trouble code is detected, it will tell you what parts are normally required to fix the problem and even where to buy, and how much they cost! I'm not 100% sure if you need to have the phone app in order to do that, but you would have to have wi-fi I presume.

It also includes tests that I have not seen on other scanners, such as a battery/alternator test.

So, as another reviewer complained, this may be hard to understand if it's your first time using a scanner, but then, maybe you just want a simple code reader (which it is as well). If you're a professional, or just a geek who likes to know how things are working, this is a professional-grade tool. It's going to support tons of things you and I may never understand or need, but it also gives a ton of fun and useful data. Don't blame the tool because the user isn't educated in the art.

It comes with a super-short quick-start guide and a link to an online PDF manual. So if you have any questions about all the cool stuff this does, you can read the manual first.

Key things in Common of Innova CarScan Pro 5110, 5210, and 5310

4 things in common between the three Innova scanners.

Design-wise, the Innova 5110, 5210, and 5310 all look very similar. All three of these hand-held OBD2 scanners have a compact design with an intuitive and robust button navigation interface.

Besides, all 3 have a 3-light LED system that shows you the severity of emission trouble codes at a glance. Green means you’re good to go, yellow indicates low-severity issues, and a red light tells you to get repairs right away.

All of these scan tools also come with Innova’s RepairSolutions2 app. This pairs with the code reader to provide verified repair suggestions for trouble codes that trigger. You can also read technical bulletins, receive recall alerts, plan the regular maintenance, or find and buy replacement parts right through the app.

Key Differences between Innova CarScan Pro 5510 vs. 5210 vs. 5310

The main differences between Innova CarScan Pro 5110, 5210, and 5310.

Design and Specifications

While the overall look of these tools is similar, they do differ in the details. The Innova CarScan Pro 5110 has a 4-button control panel and a black and white screen. You can see up to 20 pieces of info on the screen at once, so it will still give you detailed readings, though the lack of color can make it a bit trickier to read.

Both the Innova CarScan Pro 5210 and the 5310 have a 9-button control panel and a color display screen, partly to accommodate their expanded functionality and make them easier to navigate, even for basic diagnostics.

Overall Features and Functions

Innova 5110 is ideal for everyday drivers who want to save money at the mechanic.

The primary purpose of the Innova 5110 is to read diagnostic trouble codes from the engine, letting you identify the cause of the check engine light. It supports other OBD2 functions, as well, such as checking your emission system status so you know if you’ll pass smog tests.

The Innova 5210 and 5310 expand on these OBD2 functions. Both add live data and freeze frame data to the code reading and smog check capabilities of the 5110. On Innova 5310, you can see live data graphically or view the live data stream, while on the 5210, you can only read the data (no graphing capability).

Though it’s the most limited of these three tools, the Innova CarScan Pro 5110 does have some features beyond OBD2. Notably, it can read trouble codes from the anti-lock brake system (ABS).

Compared to Innova CarScan Pro 5110, 5210 is suitable for beginning DIYers

The Innova 5210 reads ABS codes, as well. It enables you to check your battery and alternator, letting you know whether they’re still good or need replacement, a useful function for diagnosing electrical issues.

Of the three, the Innova 5310 has the most functions. It still supports ABS codes and battery testing, like the two above. It can also reset the oil light and read codes from the airbag system (SRS), letting you do car maintenance like changing your oil at home along with more diagnostic power.

Supported Protocols

Compared to Innova CarScan Pro 5110, 5310 is for experienced home mechanics.

The Innova 5110 supports all 5 OBD2 communication protocols, including J1850 PWM and VPW, KW 2000, ISO9141-2, and CAN network like SAE J2480. Both the Innova 5210 and 5310 also support EOBD protocols for vehicles made in Europe.

Supported Vehicle Makes

For OBD2 functions, all three of these code readers have universal compatibility for any OBD2-compliant vehicle, including most cars, SUVs, and light trucks made in 1996 or later. They’ll even work on hybrid vehicles, though the battery testing functionality of the 5210 and 5310 may not be able to diagnose issues with hybrid batteries.

For more advanced functions of the Innova 5210 and 5310, the compatibility may vary. The Innova 5210, for example, can read ABS from some Volkswagen vehicles but not all of them. Your best option is to check each tool’s compatibility for your car on Innova’s coverage checker to make sure it supports the functions you need.

Software and Updates

All three of these tools come ready to use and won’t need updates to operate. To register your device or check for available updates, you can go to the Innova website and look up your tool.

Since you can view recalls and technical bulletins through the RepairSolutions2 app, updates aren’t as frequent or necessary as scanners from other brands. The app can be downloaded free on both iOS and Android devices, and there’s a software version for PCs. No matter what device you use, there’s a version that should work for you.

FAQs

Can the Innova CarScan Pro 5110 diagnose problems with the transmission?

If the problem triggers an associated trouble code in the OBD2 diagnostic system, yes, you’ll see it with the 5110. However, it can’t read trouble codes or data specific to the transmission system.

Do I need to download the RepairSolutions2 app to use these scan tools?

No, you can use these tools out of the box. The app expands the capabilities of the device and isn’t required to use them.

Why is my check engine light still on after clearing codes with the Innova 5210?

If the problem that caused the code is still happening, the code will trigger again after you’ve cleared it, and the light will stay on. After you’ve made the necessary repairs, try clearing the code also. This time, the light should stay off.

Can you read manufacturer-specific codes with the Innova CarScan Pro 5210?

Sometimes, but not always. The 5210 will read all general OBD2 and ABS codes. However, it doesn’t ever read DTCs specific to manufacturers.

Will the Innova 5310 check the oxygen sensor?

Yes, you can test the oxygen sensors with this tool and read their live data stream.

Can the Innova 5310 perform bi-directional functions as crankshaft position relearn?

Unfortunately, no. If you need “active testing” and bi-directional control, consider the Innova 5610. It supports these more advanced functions for most vehicle makes and models.

INNOVA 6100P OBD ENGINE COMPUTER SCANNER, SRS SCANNER, ABS SCANNER PRODUCT REVIEW

If you’re a DIY mechanic or just someone wanting to identify and better understand vehicle problems before taking it to the local repair shop, an OBD2 (or OBDII) diagnostic tool (or scanner) is almost necessary.

What is an OBD2 Scanner?

An OBD2 (on-board diagnostics – generation two, post-1996) scanner is a device that can read, interpret and clear computer codes associated with dashboard warning lights in cars and trucks. OBD2 devices are required tools in any repair shop since things like the Check Engine light can literally mean one or more of a hundred things is wrong with the vehicle.

How Do You Use An OBD2 Scanner?

To use an OBD2 scanner tool, you plug the device into the OBD2 port inside the vehicle (usually located underneath the dash in the driver’s side footwell area), turn the ignition on, and scan the vehicle with the device or its mobile app. Depending on the OBD2 device’s capabilities, it will scan the vehicle for trouble codes, recalls, maintenance specifications, and more. Most newer OBD2 scanners will also generate a report with varying degrees of potential ways to resolve any issues identified during the scan.

Innova OBD2 Scanners

If you’ve even been to one of the more popular auto parts stores, you’ve probably seen Innova OBD2 code readers somewhere near the checkout counter. Innova has been designing and developing diagnostic tools out of its California HQ for some 30 years. About half of that time, their network of ASE certified technicians (who you can call directly) have been building a massive database of millions of automotive issues and repairs for just about every foreign and domestic car and truck.

While we do have two favorite DIY OBD2 devices at the moment, let’s see if either the Innova 5210 CarScan Advisor or Innova 5610 CarScan Pro can win us over or perhaps supplement our faves, because they actually sit in a bit of a different place. More on all of that in a few.

Note

Note: We’re not doing a typical “Hands-On” starred review on this one since we’re covering two Innova products with a fairly large gap in terms of capabilities. We did spend more time with the 5610 model because it is the more advanced model.

Design & Build Quality

The design and layout of both the Innova 5210 and 5610 are pretty much the same although the 5610 is slightly larger overall. The 5210 measures about 6″ x 3.5″ while the 5610 is closer to 7″ x 4″. The packaging for both devices is the same size.

The nice, bright color display on the 5210 is almost 3″, while the same display on the 5610 is slightly larger at 3.5″. The text and data graphs are sharp, although things get a little small when you combine multiple graphs on a single screen. We used the devices inside and in bright sunlight and could see the display with no problems. Both displays also allow for brightness adjustments within the ‘Tool Settings’ screen.

Both devices have an ergonomic bottom half for quick, one-hand access to all nine function buttons. The 5610 has two additional buttons under its screen, used for various functions, like Yes/No, Next/Previous, etc., which might be a bit more difficult to reach one-handed for some.

The smaller and less advanced 5210 has an integrated DLC (data link connector) cable to connect the device to your vehicle’s OBD2 port, while the larger 5610 has a removable cable that is also much longer. The short cable on the 5210 can be frustrating at times, as it didn’t even allow the device to reach our lap as we sat in the Jeep.

There are OBD1 adaptors available from Innova, as well, which also requires a firmware update. Of the two devices we have, only the 5610 can be adapted to work with OBD1 vehicles.

The 5210 is powered via the vehicle’s own electrical system so there are no batteries. The 5610, however, does require three AA batteries in order to store vehicle information and for powering the device on when it is not connected to a vehicle. We did not test the battery life of the unit but did run it a lot, off and on, over the course of a month or so. The battery indicator did not appear (when it does, the batteries are low). If you plan to store it for extended periods, remove the batteries so they don’t end up leaking and ruining the device.

Speaking of storage, our scanners did not, unfortunately, come with any sort of storage case. At least for the much more expensive 5610 model, we’d like to see a case included with the product. Innova does sell the following case:

Setup & Trouble Code Scanning

Once you plug either of the readers into the vehicle’s OBD2 port, you’ll turn the ignition to its ‘ON’ position but not start the engine. The device will then ask you a few initial questions, and you’ll be prompted to input the vehicle’s current mileage and verify its make and model. You can also manually select the vehicle make and model via a series of menus, should you need to.

After about 20-30 seconds, the devices will retrieve and display any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and any freeze-frame data stored in the vehicle’s computer memory. If no codes are present, the screen will say so and the green LED will illuminate.

If a trouble code was found, the screen will display the appropriate code with a summary of the issue and the red LED will illuminate. If more than one code was found, you’ll use the FF/DTC button to advance to the next screen. Each code is also assigned a severity level. A level one should be repaired when convenient, a level two ASAP, and a level three means the vehicle should not be driven until repaired. These codes are visible on the display under each code description.

After the 5210 discovered our problems, we switched over to the 5610 since it does everything and more than the 5210.

If the yellow LED illuminates, it represents pending codes or other warnings. We suggest reviewing the Innova users’ manuals (not included in the boxes) for details on the three LEDs, and all other features and functions before diving into tools like these to make important decisions around vehicle repairs.

In our case, we fixed and cleared the underlying issue, but the 5610 reported that the DTC was still stored in the vehicle’s memory. Permanent DTCs cannot be reset by an OBD2 scanner, nor by disconnecting the battery. Instead, the vehicle must run its own internal scan again and will after sufficient drive-time. At that point, if the issue has in fact been resolved, the DTC will disappear.

P0, P2 and some P3 codes are universal codes across the OBD2 protocol, while P1 and some P3 codes are manufacturer-specific. The Innova RepairSolutions 2 companion app for IOS or Android will help you find solutions and parts but for more complex issues, you may want to do a bit of online research to see if you’re comfortable fixing things yourself.

Code Sequence & Freeze-Frame Data

Whenever a DTC (again, diagnostic trouble code) is triggered, the vehicle saves a snapshot of the engine’s conditions to its internal memory at the time of the event.

Enhanced DTCs

Beyond identifying standard trouble codes, both the 5210 and 5610 scanners provide the ability to retrieve certain “enhanced” DTCs for certain make and model vehicles. The 5210 is a bit more limited here but the 5610 can read DTCs for the ABS (anti-lock brake system), SRS (supplemental restraint system, a.k.a.: airbags), and TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system). The 5210 does not read SRS or TPMS codes but will read ABS codes.

There are also OEM enhanced DTCs that the scanner can search for. From the Systems menu, you’ll see your vehicle brand listed if enhanced DTCs are supported. You’ll scan those just like you would global DTCs.

Erasing DTCs

Like most OBD2 scan tools, both the Innova 5210 and 5610 can erase or reset a vehicle’s identified trouble codes. With these two devices, it’s just the press of a button. When DTCs are erased from the vehicle’s on-board computer, so too is the freeze-frame data and manufacturer-specific enhanced data. Permanent DTCs are not erased and trouble codes may appear again if the problems persist (e.g., if repairs are not made).

Vehicle Tests

Other than identifying and clearing DTCs, both the 5210 and 5610 also offer common system tests, which are useful when you need to dive into a specific DTC or after repairs have been made. Tests can be conducted on the battery and charging system, the EVAP system to check for leaks, O2 sensors, and emission-related powertrain components.

The pre-emissions or smog test ready-check is a nice feature for those who live in states that require such certifications. The three LEDs on the front of the device, and the various icons on the display, will quickly tell you if you’ll pass or not. Green is good; yellow is probably not good; red is a failed test. There is actually nothing in either manual about running the smog or pre-emissions test. But, the initial scan will alert you when something is wrong. Bottom line: you’re going for the green light.

Live Data Mode

Both the 5210 and 5610 Innova OBD2 scanners let you view and record real-time live data, such as RPMs, temperatures, speed, volts, and more. You can also monitor things like the fuel system and its status in real-time. The live data recording feature is useful for intermittent problems that may not trigger a DTC. You can record about 100 frames of live data. These are essentially screenshots, much like the freeze-frame data that is stored upon a DTC event. You can playback the saved data in a sort-of slideshow view (15s per slide) or manually, frame-by-frame.

Each supported sensor or switch in the vehicle has its own PID (parameter identification data) that the OBD2 scanner can display in real-time. Some of these can be displayed as text, graphs or both. You can also view multiple PIDs on a single screen or across multiple screens when the display itself becomes full. Finally, you can customize which data to view on a single screen (up to four) via the Custom Live Data selection screen.

Onboard & External Support

Both the 5210 and 5610 provide onboard access to various helpful resources, with no Internet connection required. The DTC Library contains a searchable list of OBD1 and OBD2 DTC definitions, while the LED and Icons library explains the many icons and various LED combinations the scanners display during use.

Outside of the device and app, Innova employs ASE-certified technicians as customer service representatives who work in the same U.S. location where the products are designed. Support is available Monday through Saturday, 6a-6p PST. That’s a huge plus, especially for the DIYer. We probably should’ve but didn’t engage them for this review… oops.

5210 vs. 5610

Obviously, both the Innova 5210 and 5610 share some basic but very useful capabilities. Let’s take a closer look at each model and how they’re different from one another.

The Innova 5210 CarScan Advisor

The Innova 5210 is the more basic or entry-level model of the two devices we have from Innova but a great fit for those mostly looking to identify vehicle trouble codes, what they mean and—with the mobile app, which we’ll talk about later—find verified repair solutions and even order the parts directly from within the app.

The 5210 can:

  • Identify and clear check engine lights on any foreign or domestic 1996 and newer OBD2 car, light truck, SUV, or hybrid passenger vehicle (OBD1 coverage optional).
  • Check to ensure your vehicle can pass an emissions/smog test, which is required in some states.
  • Scan, read, and clear ABS (brake) codes on most domestic, Asian, and European vehicles.
  • Conduct tests of the vehicle’s battery and charging system.
  • Store scan data for playback and analysis through graphical representations.
  • View live data in text or graph form, such as RPMs, temperatures, etc.

As we’ve outlined above, the 5210 itself is fairly compact with an easy-to-read 2.8″ color display, an ergonomic lower half for quick one-handed access to all nine function buttons, and an integrated DLC (data link connector) cable to connect the device to your vehicle’s OBD2 port.

The 5210 does not use batteries and is instead powered by the vehicle’s accessory fuses. And unlike some other OBD2 devices that allow you to change things like gear ratios, TPMS thresholds, etc., the Innova 5210 does not write data to the vehicle and therefore can’t harm the vehicle or its electronic systems. The only time the device somewhat controls the vehicle is during an EVAP leak or O2 test, which also will not damage anything.

For those looking for an OBD2 scanner to keep on-hand to simply identify and clear vehicle trouble codes, the Innova 5210 will do the trick. If you’re looking for more in-depth data, then you may want to consider 5610. Read on.

The Innova 5610 CarScan Pro

The Innova 5610 is far more expensive than the 5210 but is also more capable. In addition to the functions of the 5210, the 5610 adds the ability to:

  • Scan, read, and clear SRS (airbag) codes on most domestic, Asian, and European vehicles.
  • Reset the oil light after an oil change (the scanner provides step-by-step instructions for your specific vehicle).
  • Conduct an all-system network scan.
  • Reset and initialize the battery management system (BMS).
  • Perform an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) reset.
  • Read tire pressure and TPMS settings.
  • Read transmission temperature.
  • View an enhanced live data stream (engine, AT, ABS, SRS).
  • Perform active tests for various vehicle actuators and systems.

Depending on the make and model of the vehicle being tested, the 5610 offers a wide range of functions that the 5210 does not. Beyond the icons above, the 5610 can conduct very specific systems and actuator tests such as EGR, compression, cylinder performance, ESIM, ETC, NVLD, LDP, RBT, VVT, and more. There are also brand-specific tests for the likes of GM, Ford, and Chrysler, plus others when using an optional OBD1 adaptor for those vehicles.

It is important to note that Innova does offer OBD2 scanners in between the two models that we are talking about in this article. The 5210 may be a bit too basic, while the 5610 scans systems that many weekend warriors don’t need or even understand. Following is a list of other OBD2 scanners offered by Innova:

Our Tests

Like many of you, we’re working on our cars and trucks in our home garages. We’ve got several professional mechanic connections around town (including a shop owner in our own GarageSpot family), but finding time with them was a challenge since we did this stuff during the holidays. We did, however, create our own issues in a few different vehicles and both the 5210 and 5610 found those issues quickly (where applicable given the tool’s capabilities, of course).

The tests we conducted weren’t ground-breaking. We simply unplugged various sensors, hoses, and cables, including really hard-to-reach sensors. We also did things like trigger the TPMS by letting some air out of the tires and driving around for a bit, and leaving the gas cap off, which causes the Jeep to throw a code every time. The scanners found them, we cleared the codes, fixed the issue, and all was good again.

We also drove with each scanner plugged-in to see how accurate and quick-to-update the live data features were. We monitored things we could verify—like speed and certain temperatures—and things we couldn’t, like the temperature of the transmission. We’re happy to report, they were on-point, as far as what we could verify. Oh, and don’t drive and look at this stuff at the same time. Duh.

We dug deep into the 5610’s available options since it is the more advanced model. There’s a lot there in terms of what modules you can scan. On the Jeep, we were able to scan all of the modules noted throughout this article, plus things like the radio, hands-free modules, wireless control modules… the list was nine screens long.

The Repair Solutions 2 Mobile App

At its core, the RepairSolutions 2 app, which is optional and free but does require registration, is an extensive knowledge base developed by compiling and analyzing years’ worth of real-world vehicle service data. The app builds on manufacturer-recommended diagnostic and repair information by providing verified, vehicle-specific fixes supplied by ASE technicians across the country.

When the app is paired with an Innova OBD2 scanner via Bluetooth or WiFi, it reads in the DTCs similar to how they appear on the device itself—the ‘P’ code and a short description. The app then recommends parts you can buy to fix the issue(s), using the store that you filled out during the app’s initial setup. It also provides access to video tutorials, vehicle service bulletins, and safety recalls and is available for both Apple IOS and Android devices.

We like the RepairSolutions app, but it’s a bit limited when compared to other OBD2 apps that pair with either their own brand or third-party OBD2 dongles. We understand that the two devices we’re talking about here—the Innova 5210 and 5610—are not OBD2 dongles, but rather very capable, stand-alone scanners where the mobile app is completely optional. With the dongle products, the app IS the device. One of our favorites is the BlueDriver. Innova has a similar product, CarScan Mobile.

INNOVA CarScan Reader 5110 code scanner review

INNOVA CarScan Reader 5110

I like INNOVA CarScan 5110 Code reader exceptionally because of the simple interface and fewer functions. The scanner can read and clear the error code fastly. These three scanners are connected to vehicles via cable, and your smartphone connects with the scanner via Bluetooth. The device is straightforward to operate due to the four buttons. Its black and white display seemed a lot annoying to me. However, the scanner did not seem too irritating because you can operate it through your phone.

The scanner helps you to store the data. Also, you can print or play later if you want. The worst thing is that the live data feature is missing that causes a lot of difficulties.

You don’t need to worries about compatibility and updates. You can solve all problems with the Repairsolution2 app. Another exciting thing is that the phone app will notify when the trouble code find. Overall good but missing lots of essential features.

INNOVA CarScan Advisor 5210 Code Reader is almost comparing as a Professional Scanner. The device has a wide and colorful full display. Also, the color display is not a problem to read the text. The scanner has nine buttons. At first glance, it looks complex but using it; I realized it is much easier.

As we compare with the Innova 5110 scanner, it has the same features. So I did not write again. But there is a few more function here. You can inspect live data such as you can measure rpm, speed, oil temperature, etc. There are also battery maintenance facilities.

I assumed the premium feel by using the scanner. There is an advantage to update it through a repairsolution2 app.

Pros

  • Easy to use and has nine hotkeys.
  • Supports led indicators function.
  • There is a facility to connect with a phone and update it through the app.
  • The Innova 5210 obd2 scanner can test charging and reset the battery.

Cons

  • There is no advantage of abs bleeding and Hybrid Battery Cell Voltage Read.
  • The Smog Check Readiness feature is not available. It is a negative aspect.
  • There is no feature to Check Oil Level Reed & Oil Life.

INNOVA CarScan Inspector 5310 Code Scanner will be placed in the professional ranks. Besides, The device looks attractive because of the Colorful display and nine buttons. This scanner has the same features as the Innova 5210 model. However, its processing capability is faster and more functional.

Compared to the Innova 5210, this device has extra Oil Levels & Oil Life functions. The main reason I like the code reader is its processing power. It will highlight all the errors in front of you in a short time. Updates and notification systems are the same as Inaba 5210. The scanner can read abs code, but there is no benefit of abs bleeding. For this, you can try Innova 5510 scanner.

  • Can read and clear trouble code immediately.
  • There is an ability to connect with phone via Bluetooth
  • It supports three languages: English, Spanish, French

Common things among Innova CarScan Pro 5510, 5210 & 5310

Maintenance Performance & Safety: INNOVA 5110, 5210, 5310 CarScan Reader will help you find and fix problems quickly. You can control the device with your smartphone. Also, You will find the RepairSolutions2 application in the Google Play Store and App Store. The scanner connects to the app via Bluetooth. You can purchase by choosing the exact part. You will get the benefits of regular technical bulletins and safety recalls. You will also have access to Innova’s best-in-class database.

Top Features

Extra coverage: The Innova 5310, 5210 & 5110 scanner read the trouble code and erase it. Also, it will display code severity. Code severitymeans it will notify you when you need an immediate fix for your car. The Innova scanner has professional-level functionality. You will not need a technician. If you want, you can play the role of a home mechanic. You can do small things yourself.

EMISSION STATUS: I like its Easy Self Diagnosis System. These three INNOVA scanners Know your car smog check results and other important information.

Easy to use: Innova 5110, 5210, 5310, 5410, 5510, and 5610 models support 20 pieces of information on a single screen. No need to scroll down to view your data. You’ll find errors quickly and don’t need to scroll.

RepairSolutions2 App: Innova updates all their scanners (present Bluetooth modules) through the app. The Innova obd2 scanner notifies you when exact parts are required for repair, verified fixes, technical service bulletins, maintenance schedules.

Check Engine Light: You can clear and check the engine light with a button. I like the straightforward function.

Language support: English, French and almost all Innova scanners Support the Spanish language.

Firmware Update: No separate update is required for Innova 5110, 5210, 5310 scanners. The company provides the latest version. However, if you want, you can go to the official website of Innova and see if any update is available for your scanner.

You can get the software from Play Store and App Store.

Main Differences among Innova CarScan Pro 5510 vs. 5210 vs. 5310

Design and Display: Although the three scanners look the same, they have many differences. The INNOVA CarScan Reader 5110 scanner has four hotkeys, and the Display is black and white. Although you can see 20 pitches of information, the black and white Display will look weird and challenging to read.

Both the Innova 5210 and 5310 have nine buttons and come with a colorful display.

Battery Maintenance: It is normal to make the scanners do battery reset and maintenance to the advanced level. Innova 5310 and 5210 OBD2 Code Reader have this feature. You can test battery charging with this scanner.

But the Innova 5110 Professional OBD2 Code Reade does not have the battery maintenance feature. That means if you want to take it, you will be more hesitant into the real world.

10 OBD2 Modes & Live Data: Live data is an essential feature of almost all mechanics. A car owner will want to see RPM, speed, oil temperature in real-time with his scanner. Even I would never buy this type of scanner. Innova 5310 and Innova CarScan Advisor 5210 scanner has a live data feature, a positive aspect.

Even with this 100$ budget, almost all scanners have a real-time data feature. But the Innova 5110 scanner does not have this capacity.

Oil Light Reset: The oil system can be reset with Innova CarScan Inspector 5310 and Innova 5210 scanner. On the other hand, there is no role in 5510.

It is possible to reset the oil lightly with Innova 5210, but the oil level read and check life is impossible. For this, you can try these models of Innova 5310 & 5410.

Abs function: This scanner will always work for your driving safety. It means that the processor in the scanner has an ABS (Brake) system. You can read abs brakes perfectly with this scanner. INNOVA 5110 Code Scanner Diagnose the braking systems of most 2006 and newer domestic and Asian vehicles.

However, abs bleeding, airbag system functions are not in this INNOVA 5110 Code Scanner.

Protocols: Innova supports EOBD protocols in both CarScan Advisor 5210 & CarScan Inspector 5310. These are usually made in Europe.

On the other hand, Innova 5110 supports only five communication protocols: SAE J2480, KW 2000, ISO9141-2, J1850 PWM, and J1850 VPW.

Compatibility: If you have a USA design car, you can confidently buy any one of the three scanners. It will also support foreign or domestic 1996 or newer cars, hybrid vehicles, SUVs, and light trucks. Will keep all models like Volkswagen, Audi, Toyota, Scion, Mercedes Benz, Honda, Chevrolet, Dodge, BMW, etc.

Innova 5210 and 5310 will give excellent performance for more function and compatibility. You can also choose a compatible scanner with your car by visiting the Innova Coverage Checker.

The “Check Engine” light has to be one of the most infuriating inventions of all time. Like an “undefined error” in a computer program it tells you just enough to worry without saying anything useful. Some Check Engine light issues are urgent, and should be addressed immediately. More often than not, the culprit is a faulty O2 sensor or some other nonsense. But when the light comes on, you don’t know. All you know is that your vehicle is yelling at you. Worse, if your state requires an inspection, a Check Engine light is usually an automatic failure.

Unfortunately, you need an OBD II scanner to find out what the Check Engine light means. An OBD II port is a special type of plug for automobiles. Required on all US automobiles since 1996, they allow you to connect a variety of electronics, such as key programmers. With an OBD II scanner, you can determine what is causing your Check Engine light illuminated. Depending on the scanner, you can also perform a variety of other functions, such as resetting sensors. A few years back, OBD II scanners were prohibitively expensive. They cost enough that mechanics would buy them, but an average person was better off going to a mechanic. Nowadays, though, just about anybody can get their hands on a good scanner.

We’re about to review the INNOVA CarScan Advisor 5210 Code Scanner. This is a handheld OBD II scanner that’s designed to read your Check Engine code. It will also tell you what that code means, and help you find a solution. Not only that, but you can reset sensors, capture freeze frame data, and use the companion app to order parts. But does it work well enough to be worth the investment? Or are you still better off going to the mechanic? To find out, we’ll need to dig a little deeper into how this scanner works. We’ll look at the physical design, what codes it can read, and what else it can do. We’ll also talk about the types of vehicle it can be used with. Let’s get started, and see what we learn!

INNOVA CarScan Advisor 5210

Overall Design

The INNOVA CarScan Advisor 5210 Code Scanner is a handheld scanner that connects directly to your car’s OBD II port. It measures 6 inches long and 3 3/8 inches wide, with a slightly tapered grip. The back is also slightly angled, which provides for better ergonomics. The housing is all black, and is constructed from a rugged polymer. It’s not bulletproof, by any stretch of the imagination. But if you drop it on the ground, you’re not going to crack the case.

The upper half of the housing is slightly flared, and sports an easy-to-read LCD display. Many car scanners use a simple monochrome display that shows one or two pieces of data. This display, on the other hand, is full-color, with bright, crisp resolution. It shows up to 20 data points on the screen simultaneously, which makes it easier to read. This information includes not just codes but the meaning of codes, so everything is easy to understand. You also don’t have to navigate between a whole bunch of screens to find a few pieces of information.

INNOVA CarScan Advisor 5210

The control panel is just below the screen, and consists of a set of physical, rubber buttons. We like these better than a touchscreen or soft touch controls for a couple of reasons. For one thing, physical buttons are less likely to register false positives and exhibit twitchy behavior. For another thing, they’re easy to operate with dirty hands, a real concern when you’re doing car work.

One thing we didn’t like was the connection cable. At only three feet long, you may have to hunch over to read the screen when it’s plugged in. Compared to most OBD scanners, this cord is quite short. On the other hand, it’s well-engineered, with reinforced, flexible connections at the base and the tip. It’s not going to break or tear easily, even if it’s taking some abuse.

INNOVA CarScan Advisor 5210

What it Reads

So, what can you actually read with the Pro 5210? To begin with, you can read your Check Engine codes. We’ve already talked about the high-definition display, and how easy it is to read. However, this comes in extra handy when your car is reading multiple codes. You can view several at a glance, along with their meanings. Once again, the time savings is the real benefit here. Not only that, but there’s a button dedicated to clearing your light. If you’ve got a simple, non-urgent issue, this is an easy way to pass most state inspections.

INNOVA CarScan Advisor 5210

INNOVA pays particular attention to smog test issues. They have a special function that will specifically flag problems with your emissions system. It’s designed to detect any issues that will cause you to fail a California smog test, the nation’s toughest test. Similarly, their support team is based in California and experienced with California smog tests. Of course, this is no guarantee that they can help you solve every conceivable issue in all 50 states. But we’re not aware of any emissions test you can’t pass if your vehicle meets California standards.

In addition to Check Engine codes, the Pro 5210 will also read your car’s ABS codes, as well as several other systems. One thing we really liked was that you can sort codes by severity. This is a hugely beneficial feature for beginners, since you don’t have to be an expert. The scanner will tell you if your repair is urgent, or if it can wait until your next routine maintenance.

For experts, you’ll have the ability to capture freeze frame data with a single button. This can be useful for advanced diagnostics, when you’re trying to replicate a previous issue. It’s also helpful if you’re performing modifications, and want to do a before-and-after comparison.

INNOVA CarScan Advisor 5210

More Than Just a Code Scanner

So, besides just reading codes, what else can the Pro 5210 do? We’ve already mentioned that you can clear your Check Engine codes. However, you can also clear ABS and oil light codes. Barring any severe problems, this is a complete solution for passing many state inspections. That said, there are some limitations on what the Pro 5210 can and can’t reset. It cannot reset SRS or network codes. If you have an issue related to one of these systems, you’ll have to visit a mechanic.

This scanner isn’t just for diagnostics. It can also be used for monitoring your vehicle’s performance. For example, let’s say you just installed a new oil pump. You can track your oil pressure and temperature in real time, to make sure everything’s working properly. You can track speed and RPM data if you’re modifying or fixing your powertrain. You can even monitor electrical systems and test your battery and alternator. All of these features combine to make the Pro 5210 much more than just a simple code scanner.

INNOVA CarScan Advisor 5210

In addition to all that, the INNOVA scanner can be used in conjunction with their RepairSolutions2 app. This app is free on Android and iOS, and is easy to install. You can enter your code data, and find out how to repair any problems. If parts are required, you can look them up directly in the app to make sure you’re ordering the right thing. You’ll also receive any manufacturer recall or technical information. You can even see your vehicle’s recommended maintenance schedule. Keep in mind that this is a companion app, not a replacement for the scanner. If you want to scan directly from your smartphone, you’ll need a Bluetooth OBD II scanner.

INNOVA CarScan Advisor 5210

Vehicle Compatibility

The Pro 5210 will work on any vehicle sold in the US starting in 1996. It will also work with many international vehicles, provided they have an OBD II port. This includes cars, trucks, SUVs, hybrids, and anything else on four wheels. In practice, unless you’re working on classic vehicles, you’re going to be able to use it. And for most classic cars, reading error codes is a non-issue to begin with.

INNOVA CarScan Advisor 5210

That said, keep in mind that this is not a magical device. We’ve seen that it has a ton of features. However, those features will only work if they’re supported by your vehicle. As a result, there can often be a lot of daylight between the Pro 5210’s theoretical and real-world performance. For example, on many older vehicles, only the Check Engine code function will work. This isn’t a criticism of INNOVA’s car scanner as such. It’s universally true of any OBD II scanner, so it’s not as if you’re going to do any better. But if you’ve got a 1996 economy car, for example, don’t expect to reset the oil light codes or ABS.

Thankfully, INNOVA is pretty transparent about what features will work with what vehicles. As with any OBD II scanner, check with the manufacturer if you’re not sure what features you’ll be getting.

Final Verdict

The INNOVA CarScan Advisor 5210 is one of the more comprehensive OBD II scanners on the market. It’s certainly the most comprehensive you’ll find at this price point. To be fair, it doesn’t do everything. You can’t reset SRS or network scan codes, which can be annoying if you’re a power user.

But the Pro 5210’s drawbacks are minor compared to the features it offers for the average user. For one thing, the screen is easy to read and understand. You can sort codes by priority to find out if there are any urgent issues. Not only that, but the app makes it easy for even beginners to diagnose their vehicle and order parts. Finally, the emissions system support is out of this world. With their California-based support team, INNOVA ensures that you can diagnose any smog-related issues.
