Man arrested for fatal hit-and-run in Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ) - Lynchburg Police have arrested a man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run Saturday evening.

Charles Beaty, 24, of Jamestown, Tennessee was taken into custody Sunday evening and charged with felony hit-and-run and reckless driving.

September 25 at 6:01 p.m., officers responded to the 100 block of Melinda Drive for a report of an injured man. They found Daniel Bathurst, 59 of Lynchburg, who had been hit with a vehicle. He died after being taken to a hospital.

Anyone who may have captured video of this incident on a security or doorbell camera is asked to contact the Lynchburg Police Department at (434) 455-6065 or share the footage on the Neighbors portal. Residents with video footage or information can also share this anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

The LPD asks anyone who may have information about this incident to call the Traffic Safety Unit at (434) 455-6047.

Police arrest four teens following Thursday afternoon armed robbery in Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Four teenage boys are now facing multiple charges after they reportedly forced a couple from their car and robbed them at gunpoint in Lynchburg Thursday afternoon.

The Lynchburg Police Department says officers responded to the intersection of 4th Street and Jackson Street just after 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7 for a report of shots fired.

When police arrived at the scene, they determined a group of four people flagged down a man and a woman, forced the couple from their car, and stole items from the couple and from the couple’s vehicle before running away.

According to the department, shots were fired during the armed robbery, but nobody was hurt.

Officers on scene quickly tracked down and arrested four teenagers in connection with the robbery, authorities say. In addition, a bookbag containing four firearms was recovered from one of the four individuals.

Police say a 17-year-old boy, a 16-year-old boy, a 15-year-old boy, and a 14-year-old boy have been charged with the following:

  • Robbery
  • Grand larceny
  • Use of firearm in the commission of a felony

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ) - Three people have been arrested in connection with Friday’s robbery of the Bank of America on Wards Road in Lynchburg.

The following three were charged with robbery:

  • Lazaros Cardenas, 39, of Richmond
  • Suzanne Inman Marshall, 56, of Madison Heights
  • Sheri Elizabeth Bayes, 54, of Lynchburg

Cardenas was also charged with the attempted robbery of the Wells Fargo at 3408 Candlers Mountain Road Saturday.

Lynchburg Police arrest 27-year-old man in connection with short-term rental scam

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — The Lynchburg Police Department has a man in custody in connection with a short-term rental scam.

Police say they received several calls over the past few weeks of a man trying to rent a property on short-term rental sites, along with advertising the property as his own rental on several sites.

According to an announcement from the department on Monday, Sept 20, Timothy Santiago, 27, of Lynchburg is now facing the following charges:

  • Six counts of forging, uttering, other writings
  • Three counts of false statements to obtain property or credit
  • Two counts of obtaining money or signature by false pretense
  • One count of attempting to utter false statements to obtain property or credit

Police say if you were a victim of this scam where you may have had your property rented by or rented a property of Santiago or JZ Enterprises, LLC, you are asked to contact Detective Davis at 434-455-6166.

  • A sign-in sheet will be provided 30 minutes prior to the visitation.
  • You can only sign yourself in. If someone has already signed in to see the same person, you do not need to sign again; just wait for the officer to call for IDs for that person.
  • If you arrive before this time, you may sit QUIETLY in the lobby.
  • CHILDREN MUST BE SUPERVISED BY AN ADULT AND REMAIN ORDERLY AT ALL TIMES.
  • Once the sign-in sheet is out, visitors will line up in an orderly fashion to sign in and wait for the officer to call you back up for your ID. Visitors are not to just stand at the desk.
