Maintenance & Adjustments

WARNING!

Disconnect the spark plug wire and

ground it against the engine before performing any

repairs.

Maintenance

Engine

Refer to the separate Engine Operator's Manual for engine

maintenance instructions.

Tines

Clean the underside of the tine shield after each use. The dirt

washes off the tines easier if rinsed off immediately instead of

after it dries. Always towel dry the tiller afterwards and apply a

light coat of oil or silicone to prevent rusting or water damage.

NOTE: Never use a "pressure washer" to clean your tiller. Water

can penetrate tight areas of the tiller and its chain case and cause

serious damage to machine.

Lubrication

Pivot Points

Remove the belt cover and lubricate all the pivot points and

linkages at least once a season with light oil. Keep the belts free

of lubrication.

Tine Shafts

Remove the tine assemblies and lubricate the tine shafts at least

once a season.

Wheel Shafts

Remove the wheel assemblies and lubricate the axle shafts at

least once a season.

Chain Drive

The chain drive is pre-lubricated and sealed at factory.

Adjustments

Cable Adjustment

Refer to the Assembly & Set-Up section of this manual for

instructions on adjusting the forward and reverse cables.

Tines

Tilling Width

With the outer tines installed, the working width of the machine

is 24". This width may be expanded to 26" by removing the clevis

and cotter pins, sliding each outer tine outward away from the

center of the tiller and re-securing the pins in the holes provided.

How to Fill the Transmission on an Old Troy-Bilt Tiller

By Keith Dooley

Check the transmission oil level by removing the drain plug with an adjustable wrench.

Older model Troy-Bilt tillers, such as the rear-tine model , are designed to help with tilling gardens, flowerbeds and yards around the home and landscape. Maintenance is important, especially with older models, to ensure the tiller continues to operate as designed. The transmission gears must be properly lubricated during operation to prevent damage. The transmission oil level should be checked after every 30 hours of use and new oil added to fill the transmission if it is low.

Park the Troy-Bilt tiller on a flat and level work surface. Remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug for safety. Move the depth regulator up to allow the tines to rest on the ground. Allow the tiller transmission to cool completely before checking the oil level.

Remove the transmission oil plug on the left side of the tiller just above the axle with an adjustable wrench. Loosen and remove the plug. Observe the oil plug hole to determine if transmission gear oil seeps out. Add oil if no gear oil seeps from the plug hole.

Lower the depth regulator down to engage the topmost notch to top off and fill the transmission. Locate the dipstick on the back of the tiller tine shield. Remove the dipstick and set it aside in a safe location so that it will not collect dirt or debris.

Pour transmission gear oil slowly into the dipstick hole, adding 1/2 ounce at a time. Stop periodically and insert the dipstick into the hole. Remove the dipstick, wipe clean, insert it back into the hole, and then remove again to read. Avoid over-filling the transmission.

Thread the oil plug back into the side of the tiller by hand and tighten it with the adjustable wrench. Connect the spark plug wire back to the spark plug to operate the tiller.

Tips

  • The maximum capacity of the gear oil in the transmission is 12 1/2 ounces.
