The best free PlayStation 4 games available today

The best free-to-play games are often underrated. While some of the criticism is well earned, there are a lot of excellent free-to-play titles available. For those tired of spending $60 for the latest AAA games, here are the best PS4 games that you can download and play immediately at no cost.

Call of Duty: Warzone

It may not be the first Call of Duty game to do battle royale, but it&#;s certainly the best &#; not just in the franchise, but in the entire genre. Warzone has already amassed incredible acclaim, garnering a whopping 30 million players in little over a week since it was first released. The sprawling world map of Verdansk is an incredible sight to see and well equipped for the player matches.

Infinity Ward has certainly delivered an experience that evolves the atypical battle royale, with its introduction of the Gulag, wherein players are dropped into a one-on-one deathmatch after elimination in an effort to return to the battlefield. The most recent release of season 3 beckons all-new weapons and skins, in addition to four-player squads and the potential for duos on the near horizon.

Even if the battle royale gets to be a little too boring or frustrating, there&#;s a Plunder mode, which basically challenges players to amass the most cash in the allotted time. With respawns available and no ever-closing gas cloud, Plunder allows newcomers to try out the Call of Duty experience for themselves and to learn its myriad mechanics, like mounting weapons on surfaces and the various weapons color coordination. Though it helps to know all of the Warzone bunker locations ahead of time.

Fortnite

Fortnite helicopter

Fortnite really doesn&#;t need an introduction at this point. It&#;s by far the most played game across the globe. That also means it&#;s the most popular free game on PS4.

The person battle royale, filled with cartoon silliness and elaborate building mechanics, has become more than a game over the past couple years. It&#;s a cultural phenomenon. The third-person shooter is easy to pick up and play, and you&#;ll never have a problem finding a lobby filled with eager competitors. The long-awaited release of season 3 of the game has arrived, with new challenges for existing players.

Destiny 2

Destiny 2 Crimson Days

Destiny 2 has come quite a long way since its debut. Despite its age, the sci-fi looter shooter still maintains an avid player base and continues to be updated regularly by the developer. Bungie&#;s split with Activision in early helped to pave the sequel&#;s future and ensured its reach, allowing for it to go free-to-play. Now, everyone can enjoy Destiny 2, fighting across multiple planets while acquiring new weapons and armor after every intense challenge.

The $35 DLC expansion, called Shadowkeep, isn&#;t a necessity to play further once the main story has been completed. Not only are there loads of quests to take on and bosses to overcome, but there&#;s likewise the high-octane PvP mode, Crucible. This is the best place to test out the effectiveness of newly acquired gear against friends and strangers alike.

For existing players, take a look at our guide to finding Xur for exotic weapons and armor.

Brawlhalla

Published by Ubisoft, Brawlhalla is a free-to-play fighting game in a similar vein as the Super Smash Bros. series. The objective: Knock other players off the stage using one of the game&#;s plus cartoon fighters.

Brawlhalla has simplistic controls making it easy to jump in on the action. Like Super Smash Bros., weapons fall from the sky. Each character has their own play style, and Brawlhalla features a multitude of game modes and stages.

Each week, a batch of six fighters are playable without spending any money. If you like what you play, though, you can spend $20 to unlock all current and future characters.

Mobile Suit Battle Operation 2

Gundam fans, meet your new favorite free-to-play experience: Battle Operation 2. When you&#;re not too busy watching all of the best anime on Crunchyroll and Funimation, hit the PS4 for some incredible online 6v6 action. It&#;s the shining feat of this Gundam title, and what makes it even more special is that it doesn&#;t even require a PS Plus subscription.

Luckily, this online versus isn&#;t the only mode to grace Mobile Suit Battle Operation 2, as the Infantry Battle makes for a completely new and varied experience. In this mode, players will be challenged outside of their mechs as mere pilots, scrambling to place bombs on enemy bases. Who says it all has to be done inside of a Gundam?

Speaking of which, with a whopping Gundams at a player&#;s disposal, there&#;s few if any alternatives for a free-to-play experience as stacked as Battle Operation 2. Grab a few friends and join the fight today.

Apex Legends

Adding to an already extensive list of free FPS games to choose from, Apex Legends is EA&#;s breakout experience, which nearly toppled Fortnite in prolonged Twitch viewership. From the minds of Respawn Entertainment, the developer behind the Titanfall series and Jedi: Fallen Order, the trio-specific battle royale breathed new life into the mode with team revives and an intricate pinging system.

Though it may not have ever toppled Fortnite&#;s incredibly large player count, Apex Legends still gave the battle royale counterpart a run for its money. It&#;s still going strong to this day, with an average PS4 player count of 39 million. With all-new characters being added and new weapons to unlock, like the high-powered Charge Rifle, there&#;s no better time to jump in and experience the intense action at World&#;s End.

Warframe

In Warframe, players take control of members of the Tenno race, ancient ninja-like warriors that woke from a lengthy cryogenic slumber to find the world at war with multiple factions, including a frightening race of human clones. Since its launch, the third person co-op shooter has been all about the grind.

Armor suits known as Warframes serve as highly customizable character classes, with more than 30 to choose from. Each suit has four active skills and one passive skill that players can switch back and forth from. Weapons, of which players wield three, can be upgraded and tweaked via loot dropped by enemies.

There’s a competent PvP mode, but Warframe is primarily a PvE experience. Up until now, Warframe has tasked players with linking up and fighting through randomized linear levels, completing objectives along the way.

Now is the perfect time to jump into Warframe and learn the ropes, as later this year, its identity will receive its biggest overhaul yet. The next major expansion, Plains of Eidolon, will introduce player hubs (a la the Tower in Destiny) where you can meet fellow Tenno and join up for specific missions. Fast and fun (if a bit repetitive), Warframe is one of the most popular free-to-play games on PS4, and for good reason.

Dauntless

Dauntless is the amalgamation of Fortnite graphics with the gameplay of Monster Hunter. It&#;s a stellar free-to-play PS4 experience that even allows for friends across consoles to enjoy it together with its crossplay feature, an ever-growing new component in gaming. Dauntless was first released as a beta back in Fast-forward only a mere two years and the game is now among the best free RPGs on the PS4.

In Dauntless, players will go up against ruthless creatures in a fantasy land ripped asunder. These Behemoths, as they are called in-game, carry within them a variety of craftable components and supplies, which can then be used by players, known as Slayers, to build and equip so as to take on larger, more dangerous foes. Although the game is dripping in the Monster Hunter aesthetic, much of what inspired the team behind Dauntless was the Dark Souls games, making this a prime experience for the Soulsborne crowd.

Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration

Say what you will about the rebooted Lara Croft outings and their underwhelming story beats, but there is no denying that they are mesmerizing in graphical fidelity. Case in point is Rise of the Tomb Raider, which has now become a graphics benchmark for PCs and is also among Sony&#;s free PS Plus games for July.

Although players will have to be a PS Plus subscriber to get it, there&#;s no reason not to download and enjoy Rise of the Tomb Raider. As a sequel to the reboot, simply titled Tomb Raider, Rise takes Lara on a quest of epic proportions with PTSD from the previous game&#;s experiences overlapping her newfound mission into Siberia.

For hardcore Raiders and series newcomers alike, this second entry into the rebooted Croft storyline is a spellbinding adventure that would put even Uncharted to shame with its unrelenting action and above-par graphics. Do you have what it takes to step into the shoes of Lara Croft?

Let It Die

Let it Die is a grueling action game that attempts to deliver Dark Souls&#;esque difficulty in a twisted world brought to you by Grasshopper Manufacturer, the maker of Killer7 and Shadows of the Damned.

With the guidance of a skateboarding grim reaper called Uncle Death, you embark on a daunting journey up the Tower of Barbs (a structure that literally cuts through clouds). Filled with quirky characters like Mushroom Magistrate and Kommodore Suzuki, Let it Die is surprisingly rich in narrative for a free-to-play title.

The thing about Let it Die is you’ll probably love it or hate it. The combat itself, with simplistic one-button attacks and weapons that break almost as quickly as it took you to scoop them up, isn’t likely to impress many. That, combined with the game’s devastating difficulty, blends into a game that may not work for everyone, even the Dark Souls fans who should theoretically make up the game&#;s core fan base.

But for those who stick with it, Let it Die may offer dozens (if not hundreds) of hours of intense fights &#; and maybe frustration. Certainly, if you are a fan of No More Heroes creator Suda51, Let it Die’s aesthetic alone might be enough to keep you playing.

NBA 2K20

Yet another among Sony&#;s free PS Plus games for July is Take-Two Interactive&#;s NBA 2K20. Although it may be littered with some predatory content, like a fully functional slot machine, there are some awesome subversive modes that give it a certain flair (and necessitate its place among the current best free PS4 games).

For starters, the Neighborhood mode, which is unlocked after players enjoy their first drafted game, allows for loads of awesome on- and off-the-court action. From dodgeball and casino games to skateboarding and bighead basketball, Neighborhood mode in NBA 2k20 is the best thing nobody has heard about.

There&#;s also the tried and true MyTeam and MyCareer modes, which offer an insane amount of content for all types of basketball fans to enjoy; the 5v5 Scrimmage offering; and Freestyle, which basically allows players to enhance their skills to the max. For absolutely nothing, aside from the PS Plus subscription requirement, there&#;s no reason not to grab NBA 2K20 for some much-needed sports action.

Smite

In what is undoubtedly the first truly revered MOBA to grace consoles, Hi-Rez’s Smite successfully transferred the feel of MOBA to consoles — no small task, considering that mouse and keyboard is generally considered a requirement for a MOBA.

Smite uses a classic camera angle similar to what you would find in a 3D action game. The behind-the-character angle differs from games like Dota 2 or League of Legends, but it feels more immersive. Figuring out the different controls and skills may take you a while, but that’s just like most other MOBAs. You might feel a little lost at first, but you’ll be rewarded if you take a little time and stick with the game.

There are numerous possibilities to spice up your gameplay experience with this game because it has a vast array of characters and modes, combined with plentiful personalization options that make your gaming experience unique. Teams can contain three, four, or five players, and along with the standard MOBA lane-based format, there are options like Arena, which tasks players with escorting little minions across the enemy line. Smite feels more like a third-person action RPG than a MOBA, so not everyone will love it. But Smite continues to enjoy popularity as one of the most polished free-to-play PS4 games out there.

Cuisine Royale

Self-titled as the “craziest battle royale yet,” Cuisine Royale sure knows how to market itself, and it’s as over the top as it is fun to play. Be prepared to laugh out loud as you go from seeing the world through your character’s eyes to seeing your character as a separate entity. For example, you can be in the midst of a serious battle facing a realistic European landscape only to flip back to third-person and see your character dressed not in fatigues but an absurd mishmash of undergarments and household items.

The comedic elements offset a ton of realistic combat scenarios with both first and third-person shooting options. The added flair of demonic abilities, supernatural rituals, mystical traps, and an assortment of craftable items ensures players never get bored, unlike potentially mundane battle royale experiences, like Fortnite and PUBG. Cuisine Royale stands out from all the other games in the royal genre as an engaging battle game with comic relief. This Gaijin Entertainment game is a funny and entertaining breath of fresh air for the gaming community, and the best part about it is that it’s free.

30 Best Free PS4 Games From The PlayStation Store

As a console with an ever-growing library, you can rest assured that the PS4&#;s free games are pretty comprehensive in their scope. If you don&#;t have the cash to spare on the new big thing, there&#;s nothing wrong with picking up a free game to tide you over &#; just as long as you don&#;t fall down the rabbithole of microtransactions.

The conversation about free-to-play games is shifting, if only slightly. Games like Fortnite have proven that you can have a pretty compelling game without making your wallet feel lighter. Free console games tend to go down the cosmetic microtransaction route, which mean that they aren&#;t pay-to-win.

With that in mind, if you&#;re bankrupt from buying every edition of Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back imaginable or just want something new to download, here&#;s a sample of the best free games on the PS4. Also, as the new console is almost completely backwards compatible, these free games will also work on PS5.

Microtransactions? Yes

A game so maddeningly addictive that it&#;s probably on the state of Hawaii&#;s watchlist, Fortnite is arguably the biggest thing in gaming right now. And it&#;s completely free, unless you desperately need to dress up as a dinosaur to unleash your inner Jurassic Park.

While its premium skins are certainly on the premium side, none of the microtransactions in the game will affect gameplay in a noticeable way. In fact, depending on the skin you choose, you may end up sticking out like a sore thumb on the battlefield.

If you&#;re yet to see what all the fuss is about, you may as well dive in &#; and then dive out when you realise all teenagers in the world are better at it than you will ever be.

H1Z1: Battle Royale

H1Z1

Developer: Daybreak Games

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Multiplayer

The game that popularised battle royale as we know it wasn&#;t expected to land on PS4 in such a solid state, but it did, minus the obligatory server outages with million players trying to connect to the game within the space of 24 hours. That&#;s a lot of people that want to kill other people.

Coming across like the midway point between PUBG and Fortnite, H1Z1 on PS4 is a tinkered version of the old PC favourite with changes introduced to suit the game better to console. It&#;s rather easy to pick up and play, but crazy difficult to be &#;good&#; at. It&#;s stuffed with cosmetic microtransactions, but you can quite easily overlook them as a lot can be unlocked through natural play.

From our H1Z1 review:

&#;Though it’s not without fault, and will likely do little to take away from Fortnite’s ever-growing popularity, H1Z1 on PS4 is a worthy addition to the crowded genre. Plus, it’s free. Can’t complain with that.&#;

Paladins

paladins

Developer: Hi-Rez Studios, Evil Mojo Games
Publisher: Hi-Rez Studios

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Both

I searched the depths of my brain and tried to find a door to lock the Overwatch comparisons behind, but it&#;s impossible: Paladins is always going to be unofficially married to Blizzard&#;s monolith in one way or another. It&#;s not hard to see why that&#;s the case, either.

Sharing more than a few strands of DNA with Overwatch, Paladins is affectionately dubbed the &#;peasant&#; version of the hero shooter. While the step-down in quality is pretty obvious, Paladins still has tight shooting and an emphasis on teamwork that&#;s worth checking out, if only to figure out which Overwatch characters they were inspired by with their roster.

Hawken

Hawken

Developer: Hawken Entertainment
Publisher: Games

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Multiplayer

Big bastard mechs fighting each other: a simple idea not executed often enough in video games. While Hawken doesn&#;t have the fluidity of something like Titanfall 2, it&#;s still a good time in its own right. It&#;s also a lot more tactical than meets the eye, meaning that you will have to have a plan of attack before you take the fight to other mini-Metal Gears online.

While its PC version may have been shut down, Hawken still enjoys some popularity as a PS4 free-to-play game. It&#;s a little rough around the edges and not exactly gorgeous to look at sure, but with a generous monetisation model and plenty of maps to constantly explode in, Hawken is a game that will tide you over for a short while during the release schedule&#;s quieter spots.

Spacelords

Spacelords

Developer: MercuryStream
Publisher: MercuryStream

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Both

If you don&#;t recognise this game, it&#;s probably because it used to be called Raiders of the Broken Planet: a paid game that really flattered to deceive when it launched and never mustered a huge playerbase. While you would be hard pressed to suggest that the fresh lick of paint and a new business model has been a revelation, it&#;s at least made the experience far more approachable.

The unique hook of Spacelords is that you play as either the good or bad guys in a story-based campaign in 4v1 multiplayer, but you can turn to the dark side if you so wish. It&#;s a novel idea with some tight shooting backed by a pretty distinctive (if questionably ugly) art style. Those who enjoy Warframe may get a kick out of Spacelords.

Apex Legends

Apex Legends Bangalore

Developer: Respawn Entertainment
Publisher: EA

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Multiplayer

The game that finally woke Epic from their inertia, Apex Legends has created plenty of competition for Fortnite and co. since it launched as a free PS4 game. It&#;s been a roaring success, going on to reach 25 million players in just under a week and being the talk of Twitch. Its longevity has come into question a few times, but with constant updates on the way and that &#;one more match&#; appeal, it has definitely lasted the distance, especially with it now being in its fourth season and still bringing in plenty of invested players.

A squad-based battle royale that has plenty in common with the likes of Overwatch, Apex Legends has a tonne of little innovations (pinging, respawning) that make it feel completely fresh despite the genre being a little overexposed. Even those tired of battle royales in general have found something to love in Apex Legends, and its outlook for the future is looking very bright indeed.

From our Apex Legends review:

&#;Even the most jaded of battle royale fans will find their interest rejuvenated by Apex Legends thanks to Respawn&#;s attention to detail, superior gunplay, and fantastic innovations, though the loot boxes and progression system certainly need addressing.&#;

World of Tanks

World of Tanks

Developer: Wargaming
Publisher: Wargaming

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Both

A game so transformative that it&#;s more than &#;just&#; a game about tanks, World of Tanks is a PVP-centric ride featuring old school tanks. Just in case you don&#;t feel like motoring around Vinewood in a Rhino was a tad too unrealistic, World of Tanks is probably a much better alternative.

Wargaming&#;s money-spinner has actually been going for many years after first launching on PC in and many different platforms since. Its longevity is down to the barrage of content changes Wargaming diligently push out, as well as how much money it brings in each year.

It&#;s not the friendliest of games if you&#;re wanting a balanced experience without flashing the cash, so keep that in mind.

Planetside 2

planetside 2

Developer: Daybreak Games
Publisher: Daybreak Games

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Multiplayer

I have to be honest with you here: it&#;s been a long time since I jumped in to Planetside 2. The gigantic FPS game does not, however, allow you to simply &#;jump in&#;.

Its battles are massive, long-form affairs that you may need to nap through to see the end of. It currently holds the record for having the most amount of players in any FPS game, so you know it isn&#;t messing around.

Playing a game of Planetside 2 may appear a little bewildering at first, though it&#;s something you do eventually warm to (even if you never fully know what you&#;re supposed to be doing). The perfect FPS game to mess around in, and a good example that free PS4 games don&#;t necessarily have to pull back on the scale to impress.

Destiny 2

Destiny 2

Developer: Bungie
Publisher: Bungie

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Multiplayer

Free from the clutches of Activision, Bungie have been hard at work on turning the Destiny 2 ship around. While the initial response to the game was good, a lack of content and familiarity meant that the game didn&#;t exactly soar. Now they&#;re on their own, Bungie are putting their players first.

One of the first things they did was release New Light, a free to start version of the game that actually gives you a tonne of content. Missions, strikes, Gambit, and much more are all available as part of the free version, and while the time may eventually arrive where you feel like you will need to pay to unlock more, Destiny 2&#;s low price means that you get your money&#;s worth.

Call of Duty Warzone

Warzone

Developer: Infinity Ward
Publisher: Activision

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Multiplayer

While it&#;s true that are only so many battle royale games that one person can play before they become utterly jaded by the premise, Call of Duty Warzone has enough unique twists on the formula and the famous CoD gunplay the franchise is so beloved for to make it worth your time.

A man battle royale, players can team up in squads of up to three to be the last ones standing. So far, so Apex Legends, but Warzone&#;s Gulag (in which killed players 1v1 others to respawn), the gigantic map, and the sneaky ability to bring in loadouts from the main Modern Warfare experience helps it to stand out.

Even those who don&#;t play Call of Duty that often have fallen in love with Warzone, though their hard drives may not be too happy.

Hyper Scape

Hyper Scape

Developer: Ubisoft
Publisher: Ubisoft

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Multiplayer

The latest battle royale on this list of free PS4 games but almost certainly not the last to release, Hyper Scape isn&#;t some huge reinvention of the genre, though it does bring some fascinating concepts to the table.

The first is how it upgrades your weapon each time you pick up the same weapon off the floor, meaning that even a weak gun can be powerful by the end. The second in interesting spin is how it drops players at opposing corners of the map, helping each spot to feel populated. Lastly, the game has great verticality, allowing you to scale and leap across buildings with ease.

Forget all that, though: Hyper Scape lets you turn into a ball. I think that more or less confirms its status as the best free PS4 game.

The Best Free PS4 MMO and Action RPG Games

Warframe

Warframe

Developer: Digital Extremes
Publisher: Digital Extremes

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Multiplayer

The perfect example of how you can pull your struggling game back from the brink, Warframe is a constantly updating and evolving online RPG where the main aim is to look sassier than all the other cyborg ninjas. It&#;s basically one long fashion show, but there&#;s a lot of content to distract you from looking like the baddest bitch in all of the galaxy.

However, it&#;s absolutely worth mentioning the Warframe grind. You won&#;t feel compelled at all to open your wallet for the game for its early goings, but it reaches a point where it just seems to be mandatory after dozens of hours. A shame, but that&#;s still dozens of hours of spacefaring nonsense that could quite easily engulf your life for free.

Neverwinter

Neverwinter

Developer: Cryptic Studios
Publisher: Perfect World Entertainment

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Both

As far as MMORPG games go, Neverwinter may just be the perfect entry point. It isn&#;t overbearingly robust in its systems or just a lazy PC port, which means that it&#;s one of the MMO titles on the console that you can simply pick it up and play without having to consult several mystical tomes.

Despite being free, it isn&#;t afraid of doling out tonnes of content, either: it has all the expansions previously available on PC ready from the moment you start the game. However, it&#;s worth mentioning that you will hit a paywall eventually to make less grindy progress, but as this free RPG is just a game that you can dip in and out of occasionally, it&#;s not that big a deal-breaker.

SMITE

Smite

Developer: Hi-Rez Studios
Publisher: Hi-Rez Studios

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Both

Without doubt the best option for a MOBA on console, especially now that Paragon has gone the way of the dodo &#; ironically, it probably wasn&#;t helped by the first game on this list taking up all of Epic&#;s attention. SMITE is a great entry level MOBA, but your enjoyment of it will ultimately be determined by how open you are to the genre overall.

It&#;s a huge battle of gods from different pantheons of mythology, all rationalised by defending towers. SMITE is a silly concept that will lure you in with a steep learning curve that&#;s enjoyable to climb up and a pretty dedicated community to support and berate you at once.

Tera

Tera

Developer: KRAFTON
Publisher: Gameforge/En Masse Entertainment

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Multiplayer

Similarly to Neverwinter, Tera is an MMORPG that&#;s fair with its monetisation and packed with content. Previously found on PC, Tera&#;s transition to PS4 has been a fairly smooth one with plenty of players picking up its quick combat and deep systems. There&#;s the obligatory clunkiness of mapping a keyboard to a controller to be aware of, however.

Tera comes with a fairly sized world to explore and a level of customisation that&#;s sure to suck in the detail orientated. It&#;s easy on the eyes thanks to its anime stylings and also has a pretty dedicated community, so it&#;s certainly worth checking out. Tera may not have the same inescapable hook as other MMORPGs, but it&#;s perfect as something to dip into now and again.

Crossout

Crossout Free to Play

Developer: Targem Games
Publisher: Gaijin Entertainment

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Multiplayer

While Sony sleep on a new Twisted Metal game, Crossout is a good replacement to scratch that vehicular mayhem itch. A multiplayer car combat game with a bad attitude, Crossout pits you against other combatants and asks you to lean on your creativity with different weapons to gain the upper hand.

Unfortunately, that creativity also comes with a price: a pretty damn steep one at that, too. If you don&#;t put any money into Crossout, you are unlikely to have much fun with it if you&#;re trying to play it competitively. That being said, if all you want to do is live out your Mad Max fantasises, it will tide you over for a short while without separating you from your wallet.

Let It Die

Let It Die

Developer: Grasshopper Manufacture
Publisher: GungHo

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Multiplayer

Long in the making, Grasshopper&#;s utterly bizarre mish-mash of concepts and ideas is a surprisingly deep hack and slash with roguelike elements. While it was a little rough at launch, the developers have been listening to fan feedback from the start to the point where Let It Die is now just a great game, free-to-play status or not.

The story is bonkers with just about the only scrap of info about it I have retained being that you meet Uncle Death and have to grind your way to the top of a tower. Let It Die isn&#;t going to be a game that&#;s going to immediately make a lot of sense, but Soulsborne fans will definitely get a kick out of it.

Just be careful with mushrooms in what&#;s surely a contender for the best free open world game.

Trove

Trove

Developer: Gamigo AG
Publisher: Trion Worlds

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Multiplayer

Repeat after me: it looks like Minecraft, but it isn&#;t Minecraft. Trove is not Minecraft. Trovecraft is no&#;ah, hell. Let&#;s not lie to ourselves here. At its essence, Trove is an &#;alternate&#; take on the mechanics and artstyle that Minecraft the giant that it is with its own unique selling point being that it&#;s free.

If you have kids who have been misbehaving, take away their Minecraft and make them play Trove instead. Here&#;s a tip: make sure you add some pretty strong parental controls to stop them from buying all the Chaos Chests, Party Animal Pinatas, Gem Booster Boxes, Greater Neon Caches, Radiant Sovereigns, Patron Points and so on.

Star Trek Online

Star Trek Online

Developer: Cryptic Studios
Publisher: Cryptic Studios

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Multiplayer

It&#;s quite crazy that the expanses of open space hadn&#;t been fully embraced by a Star Trek game until Online came along. Star Trek Online, while incredibly rough in its early days, is one of the best free PS4 games and and also one of the best ways to approach the Final Frontier.

Behemothic in scale and content, Star Trek Online has its sharp edges and doesn&#;t exactly favour tight purse-strings for its PVP. However, with that side of the game being optional and the spacefaring and narrative costing you a grand total of zero pennies, Star Trek Online is worth checking out by even those only slightly interested in Roddenberry&#;s universe. Even if you aren&#;t investing money into the game, you will gain access to the semi-regular content additions all the same.

Dauntless

Dauntless

Developer: Phoenix Labs
Publisher: Phoenix Labs

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Multiplayer

Few first-time developers could hope for the success that Dauntless received at launch. Well, they&#;re technically not first-timers: Phoenix Labs consists of some of the most decorated names in the business, who have previously worked at the likes of BioWare, Blizzard, and Capcom. That experience truly shines through.

While the simple elevator pitch of &#;Fortnite meets Monster Hunter&#; has been parroted to the point of you feeling nauseated, don&#;t sleep on Dauntless. It&#;s a hugely fun time with or without you investing your hard earned money into it, and it&#;s only just getting started at this time of writing.

Plus, if you want a free PS4 game that you can also play with your PC and Xbox One pals, you&#;re in luck thanks to its cross-play.

Path of Exile

Path of Exile

Developer: Grinding Gear Games
Publisher: Grinding Gear Games

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Both

A game almost designed for those who love Diablo while simultaneously being sick of Blizzard, Path of Exile is an action RPG that has positively exploded into popularity over the last few years and it all comes down to how well it&#;s been supported.

Loot is, of course, the aim of the game here, and it feels almost overwhelming in terms of scope. Path of Exile&#;s skill trees almost demand glossaries on their own and competitive play is absolutely not for the faint-hearted.

With almost unlimited options for customisation and an absolutely wild difficulty curve, Path of Exile&#;s quest that sees you attempting to enact revenge in the dark continent of Wraeclas will take over your brain if you&#;re not careful.

The Best Free PS4 Single Player Games

Hitman 1 & 2

hitman

Developer: IO Interactive
Publisher: IO Interactive/Square Enix

Microtransactions? No (full game unlock)
Single Player/Multiplayer? Single Player

Say what you will about Hitman&#;s approach to content, but it&#;s hard to argue against it having some of the best gameplay of the series to date. Featuring massively open levels with plenty of ways to approach your targets, it&#;s a stealth game that rewards exploration, and also drowning people in toilets.

For the grand sum of nothing at all, you can download the intro to the game, which gives you an eminently replayable level to mess around in until you eventually get hailed as a Silent Assassin. Failing that, you can always try to make a penis shape out of dead bodies, which is what video games were quite clearly created for in the first place.

The other episodes of Hitman are periodically up for free for a limited time, too, so keep your eyes out.

Hitman 2 also has a free PS4 prologue available.

Fallout Shelter

Fallout Shelter

Developer: Bethesda
Publisher: Bethesda

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Single Player

Such a simple and effective concept that Westworld copied it (and wound up in trouble for doing so), Fallout Shelter tasks you with overseeing your very own Vault in the Fallout universe. If you&#;re tired of the heaviness of the mainline games and just want to select some things on occasion, Shelter should be your next port of call.

In terms of its F2P monetisation scheme, it&#;s not so bad. Originally released as a mobile game, Fallout Shelter is essentially a tapping simulator filled with waiting times. It&#;s not as oppressive as some of its peers, however, meaning that you can build the Vault of your dreams with just a little bit of patience.

There are loot crates, but these are totally optional &#; it&#;s worth playing Shelter for the funny quips from dwellers at the very least.

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit

Captain Spirit

Developer: DONTNOD
Publisher: Square Enix

Microtransactions? None
Single Player/Multiplayer? Single Player

Compared to the other entries on this list of the best free PS4 games, The Awesome Adventures has no strings attached. There are no microtransactions or loot boxes, just a simple narrative told well for the grand price of nothing. Not many publishers and developers would give away a well-realised game entirely for free, so credit has to go to Square Enix and DONTNOD.

However, Captain Spirit doesn&#;t cut any corners that you might expect. While it&#;s certainly short, it packs a punch over its three hours of gameplay and hints at what&#;s to come in the rest of the Life is Strange universe. Imagination is the aim of the game in Captain Spirit as you play a young boy who seeks to escape recent trauma &#; something all of us would do if we could.

From our Captain Spirit review:

&#;Captain Spirit’s aesthetic and construction is very much in line with what DONTNOD is revered for. Their ability to create tranquil atmospheres that bolster their narrative remains second to none. There are few examples of ‘show not tell’ storytelling more elegant than The Awesome Adventures of Captain which can be enjoyed by fans of the Life is Strange series, as well as anyone who enjoys narrative-driven experiences.&#;

Island Saver

Island Saver Free PS4 Games

Developer: Stormcloud Games Limited
Publisher: National Westminster Bank plc

Microtransactions? None
Single Player/Multiplayer? Single Player

What&#;s going on here, then? Why is a video game published by a bank better at teaching youngsters about money than the education system? Surely something&#;s broken somewhere?

Regardless of what it says about modern society, Island Saver is a surprisingly great &#;edutainment&#; tool that takes one or two bits of inspiration from Slime Rancher and other similar farming sims. It has no right to work this well, but it does.

Your job is to keep the island of Savvy clean from plastic waste by using your Trash Blaster, collecting litter and earning coins as you go with the game teaching you about saving money at the same time. The real objective is to collect all 42 Bankimals and unlock new areas on this wild and wacky island.

Seriously, try Island Saver. It&#;s not as bizarre as it sounds. Well, it is, but it&#;s bizarre fun.

The Best Free PS4 Fighting Games

Brawlhalla

Brawlhalla

Developer: Blue Mammoth Games
Publisher: Ubisoft

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Both

In a sea of Smash clones, Brawlhalla is one that doesn&#;t come anywhere close to matching Nintendo&#;s franchise, but it&#;s still some fun all the same. If you don&#;t want to dust off the Gamecube and search around the attic for your Wavebirds, Brawlhalla is a PS4 free-to-play brawler that&#;s worth checking out for your social nights.

Featuring an absolutely gigantic roster of characters, Brawlhalla&#;s main method of monetisation is to offer characters for free in a weekly rotation and then nudge players towards the game&#;s shop to buy more. It&#;s a pretty fair model, though you can also buy extra skins for your characters if you&#;re so inclined. Brawlhalla is lightweight fun, but not ideal if you&#;re playing against friends with bad tempers if you&#;re just going to cheese them off the map.

Dead or Alive 6: Core Fighters

Dead or Alive 6

Developer: Team Ninja/Koei Tecmo
Publisher: Koei Tecmo

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Both

If it&#;s some basic and free fisticuffs you want on your PlayStation 4, Dead or Alive 6: Core Fighters should be your first port of call. Make no mistake: it&#;s a considerably stripped down version of the main game that lacks many features, but Core Fighters is complete enough to let you know if it&#;s worth a full purchase based on the gameplay.

Players of this free to play title have a small handful of characters unlocked by default and a few of the game&#;s modes, but no campaign. You can choose whether to buy individual characters to bulk up your free download, but honestly the best idea would be to just outright buy the game if you want the fairest deal. Those gnarly sweat physics aren&#;t add-on DLC, which is nice.

Fantasy Strike

Fantasy Strike game

Developer: Sirlin Games
Publisher: Sirlin Games

Microtransactions? Yes
Single Player/Multiplayer? Both

Previously a paid game that was retrofitted as a free to play one, Fantasy Strike&#;s selling point is that its combat has been specifically designed for fighting games fans of all experiences and skill levels.

Fantasy Strike features simple combos and not an exceptionally deep meta, though everything about it is still deep enough for competitive fighting. Yomi Counters, for instance, are interesting throw break mechanics that shake things up really well.

As simple fun as the fighting itself is, the game&#;s content seems very fractured in its free state. While you do get all the characters, many modes are cut out for premium upgrades, including the option to play locally against your friends.

If that&#;s not a strike in your books, Sirlin&#;s interesting fighter is absolutely worth a look.

The Best Free PS4 Sports Games

Pro Evolution Soccer Lite

Pes

Developer: Konami
Publisher: Konami

Microtransactions? Yes

Don&#;t let the horrifying screenshot above fool you: PES is a beautiful representation of the beautiful game and its free-to-play version offers plenty of bang for your no bucks. A lot of single-player content has been stripped out, but you can still play exhibition matches, which is perfect if you&#;re sick of FIFA for being FIFA.

The main goal of Konami&#;s in releasing a free version of PES is to effectively push players towards MyClub, which is littered with microtransactions. It&#;s a lot like Ultimate Team without the polish or solid servers, so if that&#;s something you hate about FIFA, swerve it in PES.

If you haven&#;t played a PES game in years or ever, you may as well jump back aboard for Pro Evolution Soccer Lite.

Updated by Madison Lennon on February 17, Not many people are aware of how much free content is available to them on their PS4 consoles, or if they are, they immediately think that "free" means bad and full of microtransactions. To some extent, that is true.

There are a lot of poorly made free games or games that are so riddled with paywalls it's not even worth trying. But that's not always the case. We decided to revisit this list and update it with a few more free-to-play games available to you on PS4 that are surprisingly fun and won't cost you a penny!

15 Hitman 2

If you haven't played the Hitman games before, you can try out a mission from Hitman 2 for free on PS4. The games are fantastic and very in-depth and detailed. You truly get to experience what it would be like to live as an assassin or superspy.

The free mission for Hitman 2 will let you travel to New Zealand as Agent 47, who is on the hunt for a mysterious shadow client. While there is only one mission unlocked, you can try to master it and accomplish more than 40 different challenges created by improvisation and experimentation.

14 Neverwinter

For those of you who love games like Runescape and World of Warcraft, you should give Neverwinter a chance. It's one of the simplest MMORPGs to get into, and yet it still delivers tons of content, all for free.

Depending on how much time you put into the game, you might eventually run into a potential paywall, but it's not mandatory, you'll just have to be patient with some of the waiting times and leveling up processes. If you're familiar with Dungeons and Dragons, you probably recognize the name as the game is based on fictional Forgotten Realms city from D&D.

13 Fishing Planet

Are you a fan of simulator games? Fishing Planet is an impressive fishing simulator, it's extremely realistic and has great graphics. Plus, the fishes in the game are supposedly intelligent and meant to mimic the unique behavior of their species. There are over types overall.

Beyond that, there are more than 17 different scenic waterways for you to choose from that all vary with their climate conditions and terrain. You can also choose between a multitude of bait and tackle bombinations and even three different fishing styles.

12 Z1 Battle Royale

Z1 Battle Royale is a free battle royale game that lets you compete against players all over the world. It is a reimagining of the original game, redesigned for the PS4. It's popular enough that when it was first released, more than one million players tried to access it at one time and crashed the servers.

As with most free games, there are microtransactions but they're very easy to avoid. As for the gameplay itself, it's somewhat similar to Fortnite. It's easy to learn how to play it, but it's hard to become very skilled.

11 Fallout Shelter

For those of you that can't get enough Fallout, make sure you don't miss out on this free simulation game that's part of the franchise. The point of the game is, as the title suggests, you'll be in charge of managing your own underground commune and fallout shelter.

There are microtransactions, but they're really just there to speed up wait times, so if you're patient, you can easily avoid them. It will be your job as Overseer to make sure your citizens are protected and have all the resources they need.

10 Fortnite Battle Royale

Love it, or hate it, there is no denying the incredible success of Epic's Fortnite Battle Royale. What began as a horde-mode-style game, has since added a battle royale experience which quickly became the highest grossing free-to-play-game of all time. Last year alone, the game brought in over billion dollars.

In Fornite, players drop into a large open map, filled with guns, vehicles, and buildings to destroy/build. The goal? Be the last player, or squad left alive as the map around you slowly shrinks. Not only is Fornite Battle Royale free, but it also supports cross-play with basically all the latest consoles, phones, and computers.

9 DC Universe Online

DC Universe Online is a dream for everyone who is a fan of the comic book source material. In it, players will create their own, original superhero or villain and battle alongside, or against, Batman, Superman, and the like. This MMO-style adventure allows you to partner up with your friends and take on dungeons, raids, and bosses featuring many of DC's iconic characters.

Even when you hit the max level, there is a ton of post-game content to keep you invested for hours. This is one of the older games on the list, with it first appearing on the PlayStation 3 in , before making the jump to PS4 in However, since then, it has continued to be updated with new content, items, and characters. This is a must have for any DC fans out there.

8 Paladins: Champions Of The Realm

If hero-based shooters like Overwatch are more your style, Paladins from Hi-Rez Studios may be just the game to scratch that itch for free. With over 35 heroes with different load-outs and abilities to choose from,  this shooter offers a lot of variety. Not only can you battle as a giant tree, or use a snakehead as a venom launcher but Paladins offers a crazy amount of customization for each hero.

Before each match, you can use special cards to buff certain abilities. Likewise, during the match, you can purchase items to assist you in battle, similar to many MOBA-type games. This game is chaotic, action-packed, and definitely worth your time.

7 Gwent

When The Witcher 3was released, it was obvious this game was special. There was SO much to see and do, the amount of detail was almost overwhelming at times. Featured in the main game was "side-game" calledGwent, which allowed you to battle cards against various NPC's. Gwent has now been released as a stand-alone title on the PS4, for free. Those familiar with the Witcher 3 version will know what to expect.

RELATED: Rumor: A Nintendo Switch Version Of The Witcher 3 Is Being Listed By International Retailers

You choose a faction, build a deck, and battle other players using strategic maneuvers. This is an incredibly well-developed card game that will hook you immediately, with new modes being released regularly. The more you play, the better decks you can build, and the greater the challenges you can face!

6 Let It Die

With the overwhelming success of the Souls games, it was only natural that there would be imitators. Let It Die borrows heavily from its far more popular predecessors but it sets itself apart with zany characters, settings, and weapons. Your character is tasked with battling to the top of the "Tower of Barbs," a feat which has never been accomplished.

Along the way, you will meet outlandish NPCs, and discover some truly hilarious weapons like buzzsaw knuckles, a firework launcher, or a flame wand. It's all as weird as it sounds while the flashy mayhem on display here is truly a joy to watch. Just be prepared to diea lot.

5 The Awesome Adventures Of Captain Spirit

There are few games that have perfected storytelling like Life is Strange. This graphic-adventure style game is more like an interactive movie, allowing players the chance to make decisions, solve puzzles, and watch their choices play out in a cinematic style. As a precursor to Life is Strange 2, The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spiritis a bite-sized adventure that bridges the gap between the two games.

You play as Chris Eriksen, a young boy who faces a tragic loss and creates a superhero persona as a coping method. Over the roughly 2 hour campaign, you will follow his story while inputting your choices to alter his path. This game is perfect for those who want to relax with a great story, rather than deep gameplay mechanics.

4 Brawlhalla

Brawlhalla is classified as a platformer battle arena, however, most people will just immediately compare it to the popular Super Smash Brothers franchise.  You and your friends will battle for control over a 2D map, trying to kick, punch, chop, and shoot each other over the edge.

Each legend has different abilities and plays slightly differently. There are a variety of game modes to check out and over 40 legends to unlock.  You can battle with up to 8-players, which makes this a fantastic game to bust out at parties.

3 Dauntless

Dauntless, though not officially released at the time of writing, is already making some big waves. Currently, in open beta, this free-to-play game is a Monster Hunter style action-adventure. After creating your character, you are thrust into The Shattered Isles with nothing but a sword and your wits! The goal is to take down the many behemoths that roam the world and use their various parts to craft weapons and armor.

RELATED: Dauntless Release Date and Features Announced For PS4, Xbox One, And PC

It's a familiar formula but Dauntless' cartoony style, fast combat, and fluid movement make it feel different than other games in this genre. The best part is it is cross-playable with PC and Xbox One, so you and your pals can tackle beasts together!

2 Apex Legends

When Apex Legends launched from developer Respawn this year, much of the gaming community was initially disappointed that it wasn't a new Titanfall. However, those disappointments were immediately alleviated when players enter the world of King's Canyon in this first-person, battle royale.

Apex combines hero-shooter style gameplay with battle royale tropes. 60 players battle for control of a shrinking map in squads of 3 players, in various combos of the available 9 heroes. What truly sets Apex apart is the tight controllers, slick movement, and character abilities. The moment-to-moment gameplay just feels so good it is hard to put it down. It also uses a ping system that allows for fantastic communication between squads without the need for mics.

1 Warframe

If looter-shooters in the same vein as Destiny, pique your interest,Warframe is definitely worth checking out. This entry is a 3rd-person, sci-fi action game with a heavy focus on co-op. You play as an alien race known as the Tenno. Each player operates a ninja-like mech suit called a Warframe.

Explore an open world on your hoverboard while scoring loot, upgrading your equipment, and learning new abilities. Warframe also allows you and your friends to party up and tackle some of the games tougher dungeons and bosses. There are hundreds of hours of content here for the low price of FREE!

Call of Duty: Warzone

It only launched in March , but Call of Duty: Warzone is easily the biggest battle royale game right now, already surpassing 30 million players in just over a month since release. It's easy to see why. Not only is it completely free, but Infinity Ward's epic shooter allows up to players per match, supports full crossplay between console and PC, is already integrated with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and is thus the most polished and fine-tuned battle royale experience yet.

With new modes and playlists being added every week, and the current situation in which everyone and their dog is "up for a game" right now, there's no better time to jump into Verdansk. There's even a unique Gulag system and Plunder mode, in which teams vie for Warzone's in-game Cash currency, for those who don't enjoy being thrown out of the game after their first death. What's not to love?

 Fortnite Battle Royale

Fortnite Battle Royale is probably the hottest, free multiplayer game right now, and for good reason. Taking Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds’ basis of a vast, player, last-man-standing shooter as its starting point, and then evolving it with natty, on-the-fly, tactical construction, Battle Royale is an instantly accessible hoot with serious long-term depth.

Parachuting into a huge, open-world island map – initially completely unarmed and entirely devoid of supplies – the opening minutes of any match are a giddy, tense scramble as you attempt to glide to a spot free of competition (but hopefully bountiful of resources), search for a weapon, and quickly smash up the environment in a bid to accrue a few of the building resources you’ll need as things heat up. As the map boundaries close in, player numbers dwindle, and base structures become ever more elaborate, a different kind of tension ramps, as the game’s demands dynamically evolve. It’s an unpredictable joy every time, and with developer Epic updating Battle Royale at a heady pace, one that’s only going to grow over the coming months.

Brawlhalla

Forget PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. Actually, forget that instruction. No-one remembers PlayStation All-Stars. Sony’s mascot-touting, Smash Bros. ‘homage’ made a splash akin to a pea in the Pacific back in , and the light, breezy, platform-brawler fighting game genre has (mostly) remained the sole preserve of Nintendo ever since. But no longer!

A decidedly slick, accomplished, and even slightly more energetic take on the Smash formula, Brawlhalla presents a nonsensically eclectic cast of mythical and historical warrior archetypes – taking in Valkyries, Vikings, medieval knights, and er, ‘30s gangsters – and lets you go wild. With an increased focus on empowered air-control, and bigger scope for epic, high-flying ‘off-stage’ duels, Brawlhalla also does a good job of standing (somewhat) distinct from it inspiration. And its free-to-play model is rather friendly too, offering a limited selection of the character roster on free rotation, with earned in-game currency or real money buying the rest.

Apex Legends

One part Overwatch-style hero shooter, two parts Titanfall 2 successor, and five parts battle royale game, Respawn's surprise free-to-play FPS was so sudden in its arrival, and surprisingly good in quality, that it's currently being hailed as the gaming equivalent of mana from heaven, and it plays like it too.

Meticulously devised with Respawns' trademark for fast-paced, air-tight shooting, Apex Legends is a breath of fresh air in the battle royale market, underlaying its breakneck pace with a welcome focus on squad interdependency. That, in addition to the immeasurably innovative Ping system, makes Apex Legends worth the added megabytes to your PS4 hard drive, regardless of whether you've even made a passing glance at Fortnite by this point.

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit

You might have missed out on Life is Strange and its prequel Life is Strange: Before the Storm till now, claiming "insignificant funds" as an excuse to miss out on Dontnod's excellent interactive adventures, but with The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, there's nowhere left to hide.

A totally free, bite-size chunk of Life is Strange gameplay, as well as a precursor to the first game's official sequel, this two hour trip inside the mind of endearing seven year old Chris is a delight from beginning to end. It's not the longest game in the world, but then again, you won't have to pay a thing, and not a single minute spent with the imaginative youngster is wasted when he's such an empathetic and loveable presence. It's the perfect gateway drug to the wonderful world of Arcadia Bay.

Smite

Part third-person action game, part competitive shooter, part RPG, part co-operative PvP team game, Smite takes the loose spirit of the MOBA and turns the genre in an entirely more immediate direction. You’ll earn gold and experience with which to level and enhance your character’s power and abilities, but – much like in something like Destiny – the RPG numbers mean nothing if your action skills and combat strategy aren’t up to standard.

Not that this is just about instinctive twitch play. With a current line-up of 93 playable hero deities covering ranged and melee archetypes (with separate magical and physical combat types), spread over five distinct classes, there’s a huge amount of tactical team play to get stuck into. The free-to-play model is pretty damn pleasant, too. You get five permanent gods for free when you start, and five more will cycle into the roster on a weekly basis. From then on you can buy or rent your chosen champions as you go, or pay for the full package and get access to every one that’s been released, and every one that ever will be.

Hitman

While this free chunk of IO Interactive's sandbox only gives you the first two missions of Hitman's full game, that alone is still more than enough for hours worth of quality content, alongside the 2 Escalation Contracts, 40+ Challenges, and 17 PlayStation Trophies that come with it.

What's more, IO Interactive often makes even more Hitman missions free for a limited time during certain times of the year, so be patient, and you could end up playing the whole game without paying anything at all. Oh, and we should probably add, the iconic assassin's reboot is one of the best stealth/sandbox titles of recent memory, and you can even play Hitman 2's prologue for free right now. Catch up with what you've missed for nothing at all.

Realm Royale

Youngling battle royale fans with a case of Fortnite fatigue need not look any further than Hi-Rez's latest free-to-play title Realm Royale. The multiplayer game hit PC in the Summer of last year, and quickly racked up an impressive audience, before moving to console with its open beta. But what makes this battle royale stand out from the rest? Chickens, for one thing. Whenever you're downed, your character has a chance to survive as a white flag waving fowl before coming back into the fold after a ten second timer.

Not only that, but Realm Royale features class-based gameplay, personal mounts, a unique arsenal of armour and weapons, and an eye-pleasing art style that makes that familiar base jump at the start of each map all the more exciting. The open beta will eventually form into a full release, and you can help Hi-Rez iron out the technical bumps in the meantime by putting Realm Royale through its paces.

Let it Die

A hectic, borderline-sadistic hack-and-slash, you should only play Let it Die if you have a penchant for getting your ass handed to you. Or thrown over the other side of the room as one of its many insane bosses rips you in half in ways you didn’t know existed. No, I’m not going to compare it to that game about darkness and souls. Grinding your way through its many levels, you’ll have to beat boss after boss to make it all the way to the top of a tower that’s mysteriously risen up through the earth. On your way you’ll meet characters that look like someone pitched them based on random word combinations.

The most memorable by far is the skateboarding Uncle Death. Who wears spiral sunglasses and biker boots. He’s… interesting. There is a slim monetisation aspect to Let it Die, but you get a ton of ‘death metals’, its currency of choice (*metal horns gesture*), thrown at you after completing special events so you don’t have to drain your wallet to play. Plus each time you die your player will appear in someone else’s game as an additional enemy. So we promise all those deaths mean something. Promise.

DC Universe Online

Imagine having the whole pantheon of DC comics at your fingertips, where superheroes saunter through city streets without fear of prejudice and adventure lies around every corner. That's DC Universe Online in a nutshell; a battle-tested MMO in which players create their own superhero and battle it out in a sprawling multiplayer landscape inspired by the comic books that brought us Bats, Supes, and all the rest.

The game's over seven years old, so its visual oomph isn't as impressive at it once was, but developer Daybreak Game Company has been so committed to enriching the game with new updates and content since launch that it's hard not to be impressed by the sheer breadth of gameplay available for free. A must play for DC fans, and definitely something to try out for those on a budget, DC Universe Online is a super sized corker of a free product.

H1Z1: Battle Royale

To mitigate the notable lack of crowd-pleasers, Sony pulled out all the stops for the remaining 10 months of By the end of the year, the Vita gained support for the well-regarded PlayStation Plus subscription service. For $50 a year, Vita owners could download select games for free every month, with the one caveat that, should they cancel their subscriptions, access to those titles would be rescinded.

A system bundle, which included a whole year of the service along with a 4GB memory card, came out at a time when its heaviest hitters could be downloaded for free using the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection incentive. But by then smart phone games were evolving, Vita's reputation had been - fairly or unfairly - tarnished as something with no viable games to play, and Sony was slow to unlock its heritage of PlayStation games to help stem the bleeding. PS5 take note - while new games are pricey to produce, Sony already has a raft of older titles to lean on when that lull inevitably comes along in between PS5's launch and its second wave.

In a last-ditch effort to save the Vita from becoming the next Dreamcast, Sony was giving away a year's worth of access to Uncharted: Golden Abyss, WipEout , Gravity Rush, and Unit 13 as part of this bundle. Moreover, by December, annualized best-selling franchises like Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty both had a presence on the Vita, though admittedly both Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation and Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified kind of sucked. Critically, the latter was a disaster for the Vita's reputation. If the masses were already dissuaded from buying a Vita due to a lack of triple-A blockbusters, Black Ops Declassified would cement that decision.

Paladins

For those who want a good hero shooter to tuck into, but can't afford the ever pricey Overwatch, Paladins is the perfect substitute. Sure, it's almost criminal just how similar it is to Blizzard's multiplayer masterpiece, right down to each character's design and their respective special abilities, but Hi-Rez Studios has managed to cobble something seriously fun out of this unashamed imitation.

As a free-to-play shooter, Paladin's microtransaction store, which the progression system awkwardly pushes you towards, is hard to ignore or enjoy, but there's no pay-to-win rubbish to worry about here. It's all cosmetic, and Paladins actually has a distinguishable aesthetic to it once you're done comparing it to other shooters on the market, with a wild, energetic visual palette that's easy on the eyes and pairs well with the rambunctious PvP skirmishes. An easy choice for the shooter fan.

Warframe

Cyberninjas. Does that word alone not sell you on Warframe instantly? With your main aims being assassination, looting, and trying out as many frames as possible, at first the amount to do is intimidating. You see, ‘frames’ are loadouts (in the form of different sets of armour) that determine your abilities, and therefore your playstyle. To amass different frames to try you’ll first need blueprints, which will be splurged out of bosses you defeat. Use these to buy the frame you’ve got your eye on. One will be able to teleport, another will be able to summon a frost nova or a sonic boom.

Encouraging you to play the game however you want and try out new approaches, it helps that each frame has an eye-catching design for you to yearn after. It’s outperformed usual free-to-play expectations by making it entirely possible to get to a high level of expertise without paying a single penny, though expect to grind quite a bit in the process. With over 50 million users, there’s a very active community to play too.

Fallout Shelter

After years of thriving on mobile devices, Bethesda took to its E3 stage to announce that Fallout Shelter would be hitting the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch consoles for free, no strings attached whatsoever. The vault management spin-off to the studio's acclaimed RPG franchise is definitely more of a mobile game than anything else, but its crafted with such dedication and whimsy by Bethesda that the translation to PlayStation 4 feels completely natural.

If you're willing to be patient, you can also completely ignore Fallout Shelter's microtransactions, which are mainly there to speed up wait times of questing beyond the vault. Before you know it, you'll be addicted to overseeing your subterranean commune, building new structures, cranking out resources, and micro-managing the populace like all the great post-apocalyptic dictators of past, present, and future.

Gwent: The Witcher Card Game

Though technically still in Beta (several years after being announced), CD Projekt Red has stated that Gwent: The Witcher Card Game will be free to all throughout its lifetime, and it's worth downloading now regardless of that early access status. The unexpected spin-off to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a perspicuous and stimulating card game that CDPR originally devised as a side hobby in its adored RPG series, but the clash of wits and stats has found new life as a much loved pastime that can really steal the hours from any competitor, if they're willing to let it.

A good card game on console, let alone a free one, is a rare find these days, and anyone who's played The Witcher 3 will know that the calibre of the studio behind Gwent is enough of a reason to beam this one into your PS4 memory banks. At the very least, Gwent is just another excuse to enjoy the sights and sounds of The Witcher before its makers ever return to that world inoh I don't know, a century's time.

You'll avoid spending money with the best free PS4 games, but what you won't be avoiding is a good time. While these titles don't ask you to pay up-front, they still offer fantastic gameplay for you to try out before deciding whether to get invested.

Many of them instead offer optional purchases to keep going, or are demos meant to persuade you to buy their full-priced editions. But while you may be heavily encouraged to spend a little money to support the developer, you don't have to pay if you have to.

Free PS4 games are the perfect way to increase the variety of your gaming diet. They can also be a great way to easily play online with your friends, if you can't all agree on a new major release to buy together.

Browsing the F2P section of the store can also be the best way to get a taste of a new genre, or try a game that you're not too sure about. And if you're trying to scrape together enough money to upgrade to the PS5, then playing the best free PS4 games means you can play new games without needing to give up your favorite pastime

What are the best free PS4 games?

You may notice that as you scroll through this list that many of the best free PS4 games have multiplayer elements, which is great if you and your friends want to play something together without having to contend with differing gaming budgets and such. Warframe is one of these, and while you can spend money on cosmetic items and upgrades, it is an exceptionally fun title to play co-operatively.

If you want a title from this best free PS4 games selection that's a bit more competitive, then the battle royale genre, represented by Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone and Cuisine Royale on this list, might be what you need. Fortnite: Battle Royale probably needs little introduction - it's one of the biggest games on the planet right now. However if you want something with a modern military theme and extra elements like vehicles, you may want to try Warzone. On the other hand, Cuisine Royale makes things weirder by adding in cobbled-together armor sets and magic powers.

If these options still aren't enough, then there's also Hyper Scape, which will let you get involved as either a player or viewer, and whether you're still alive in-game or just an "echo" trying to aid your squadmates from beyond the virtual grave.

eFootball PES should be your choice if you're looking for a sports title. It's not just a demo, it's got all the same modes as the original game, and lets you play with other free-to-players and paid players too. The only limitation is the teams you can select.

There's also a couple of fighting games on this best free PS4 games list for a more traditional multiplayer game. The 2d Brawlhalla acts a lot like Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. with its focus on vertical and horizontal movement and defeat by ring-outs. Dead or Alive is a 3d fighter, in which you'll spend more time trying to step around your opponents to deliver your deadly strikes in longer combos. If both of these are too intimidating, then the easy-to-learn Fantasy Strike might be what you're after.

If you want a more solo experience from the best free PS4 games, make a beeline for Genshin Impact. While it has an optional co-op mode, you can enjoy this RPG by yourself, adventuring through its enormous map, discovering its secrets and fighting off bad guys with your weapons and spells.

The best free PS4 games to play today

The free version of eFootball still offers a surprisingly generous amount of content compared to the standard edition. You can play the main myClub mode, letting you pick players and managers to create the best squad possible. You can also train up play matches again the computer or other eFootball players, including those who own the full game.

The only real limitation is the small pool of teams you can use in Local or Co-op matches. The five teams: FC Barcelona, FC Bayern München, Juventus, Manchester United and Arsenal - may not be ones you support, but will make for some great games all the same.

2. You Are Being Followed

If you have a PSVR headset, then you can try this virtual reality short about a blind woman and her guide dog. It's based on a BAFTA Young Game Designers award winner, which should give you a good idea of the themes and tone-heavy design of this experience.

Since your main character can't see, the game relies a lot on sound. There are still visuals though, meaning the VR headset is definitely needed. It's a great shame if you don't have one, since it's not like any of the other best free PS4 games on this list.

3. Fantasy Strike

For an entry price of zero dollars, you can play this easy-to-learn fighting game online in casual or ranked matches, or against the AI offline. If you want access to the rest of the modes, it's $

What you do get however is all the game's characters unlocked from the start. None of them use special inputs; all their fanciest attacks are bound to simple button presses. All you therefore need to do is focus on learning the strategy of moving through the 2D arena, and figuring out the best way to defeat each of the different playable fighters.

This game is still competitive online however. Don't mistake the simple mechanics of this best free PS4 games guide member for a mindless game!

4. Rogue Company

Sure, this is another competitive shooter with optional microtransactions, but it still has a place on this best free PS4 games list because you can get started with the 4v4 objective-based battles for zero dollars.

You'll begin a match by skydiving in, but once you're on the ground, there are a couple of things you might be faced with. There will either be a bomb, which you may be tasked with either planting or preventing from being planted, or a series of control points you'll need to capture.

Once that's over, the next round will begin, with the chance for you to spend money you've earned that match for various mini-objectives on better guns and new ability upgrades.

5. Spellbreak

Forget your guns but bring your magical gauntlets for this battle royale. While it's a smaller scale fight than you might be used to, there is depth to be found thanks to six different battlemage classes and customizable load-outs for unique magical attacks, plus the usual power-ups to battle over around the map.

The game boasts a fully realized crossplay system, so you can play and make progress on a single account on any of your other current-generation gaming platforms, or just play with friends who don't own the same console. What's more exciting is the promised content that Spellbreak has in store for the future. You can expect this one of our best free PS4 games picks to gain more play modes, locations and backstory to be filled in throughout the game's life, according to the developers' promises.

6. Genshin Impact

The Seven gods of Tevyat hold many secrets. Having woken up in this new world with no knowledge of it, and separated from your brother or sister, the answers to your predicament must be in their hands.

You'll have to travel around Tevyat to find these deities, with your weapon of choice being the seven magical elements that the gods represent. You'll also be able to traverse the landscape freely by land, water and air as the weather above you dynamically changes. Plus you can join up with up to three others to form a squad of adventurers.

This is the best free PS4 games list's answer to Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and it does a good job of it. So if you're looking for an RPG with a focus on exploration and magical combat that also happens to be free, then you really should take a look at this one.

7. Hyperscape

The newest battle royale on the block is the one of the best free PS4 games for getting both players and spectators involved in the action.

As a competitor in Crown Rush, the game world's virtual free-for-all battle, you face off against 99 other players in a shrinking area of the map, finding weapons and other special items to ensure your survival. But when you get to the final round, you can either eliminate your remaining opponents, or possess the 'Crown' for 45 seconds to claim victory. Even if you do happen to die earlier in the round, you can still take part as an "echo", alerting your squadmates to incoming danger.

If you happen to play with, or indeed be, a game streamer, you get to make use of chat voting to influence which of the conditions come into effect.

8. Cuisine Royale

If even the cartoon style of Fortnite is too serious for you, then Cuisine Royale is a particularly strange cooking-based take on the battle royale genre. After spawning randomly on the map, you have to scramble for weapons and the safe zone like normal, except your offensive abilities are augmented by kill-powered magic abilities, and your armor is made of both actual vests and plating and kitchen equipment.

It's a less epic (no pun intended) experience than the other popular BR games on this best free PS4 games list. However the exciting squad vs squad fights combined with the game's bizarre added powerups and dangers provide tactical challenges and funny gameplay moments.

9. Call of Duty: Warzone

You don't need to have another CoD game on your PS4 to access Warzone, the franchise's take on the battle royale genre. When you boot up the game and dive out of the plane into the game map, you'll find yourself in a player battle, on a huge island made of components taken from classic maps from the franchise. And when you take a fatal hit, you have a second chance in the form of the Gulag, a 1v1 match in a cramped environment against another player looking for a free rez.

Overall, there's plenty that this member of the best free PS4 games guide offers, enough to maybe convince a Fortnite or PUBG fan to try a different game for once.

Smite

Most MOBA games place you as an aerial observer of the battlefield, but Smite puts you right behind your chosen character, who will be one of hundreds of gods from pantheons around the world. You stride, pounce or fly into battle against opposing heroes and their minions to destroy their Titan and win the match, taking out towers along the way.

Smite is easy to pick up thanks to automatic settings for leveling your character’s abilities up and buying key items. but there’s plenty of depth and tactical enjoyment too once you turn off these settings, and look around the enormous character roster for your favorite champions in each role. This MOBA/third-person action game combo is a unique experience among the best free PS4 games, and one that might help fans of its mixed-up genres appreciate the other.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation 2

You don’t need to have kept up with the enormous Gundam franchise of movies, TV shows and other games to enjoy this multiplayer game. Two teams of six head out onto the battlefield either on foot or in one of the series’ titular mechanical battle suits. This sequel also adds the option to leave the planet and fight in space, adding a whole new dimension to the fight.

Like many other best free PS4 games, you can unlock more and more content as you play, or pay with real money to unlock one of the available mechas that takes your fancy straight away. It’s hard to find a MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) title on consoles, but Genesis wants to be the best free PS4 games equivalent of League of Legends and other massive titles that dwell on PC. You can pick one of 28 heroes to take into a 5v5 battle in a sci-fi themed maps with dynamically changing elements, either in traditional multiplayer, single-player or in a co-operative PvE campaign.

The game continues to grow over time to maintain your interest, allowing you to equip the champions with different items and weaponry. The inclusion of the PVE mode means you can learn to play or just chill out by fighting against AI opponents by yourself or with friends. The developers are also very open to discussing balance changes, which means you can hopefully change the game for the better if you really want to get involved.

Either alone or with up to three other companions, you will be tracking and defeating enormous beasts, then taking the loot you've gathered home to upgrade your gear. The world’s rendered in a charming cartoon-ish style too, making it a joy to behold as you look for your next target, which will be one of many unique Behemoth creatures.

Apex Legends

Apex Legends puts a fresh spin on the genre made popular by PUBG and Fortnite, offering tactical, team-based gameplay in which 20 squads of three battle to be the last team standing. Apex Legends stands out from the best free PS4 games pack by allowing you to choose from distinct characters each with their own abilities (a la Overwatch), creating endless possibilities for how you strategize with your team. The game's brilliant ping system lets you mark locations, weapons and enemies for your teammates without saying a word, and the smooth movement and gunplay just feels great -- this is the team that delivered Titanfall, after all.

You can’t play the game’s story mode, but you can play online with people who have bought the game, and transfer your progress from the free version if you decide you enjoy it enough to buy the full experience.

Fortnite Battle Royale

Despite some serious competition from games like Apex Legends, Fortnite is still one of the best free PS4 games for a reason. This multiplayer shooter has players parachute onto a battlefield and scavenge for weapons and supplies, then fight until there's one person or team left standing. However, Battle Royale stands out by incorporating the base-building mechanics of the core Fortnite game, which adds an exciting wrinkle to the formula by letting you create traps and strongholds as you fight to survive.

Fortnite remains one of the biggest games out there thanks to constant updates and in-game events, from new skins and map changes to rebalanced weapons to live in-game concerts and even a whole fresh start in the form of Fortnite Chapter 2. Its colorful, whimsical art style also makes it a great battle royale starting point for younger players.

Dead or Alive 6: Core Fighters

Dead or Alive 6: Core Fighters lets you try one of the biggest fighting games out there, but in the form of one of the best free PS4 games. But this is no limited demo -- while you'll be restricted to a handful of characters (which rotate out on a regular basis), you can still play the bulk of this frenetic 3D fighter's modes, including training mode, online battles and a portion of the game's story mode.

Dead or Alive 6 evolves the iconic fighting franchise with a new meter system that lets you unleash devastating Break attacks, as well as the Fatal Rush which allows you to perform combos with a single button. All of this looks great thanks to the most stunningly realistic graphics the series has seen yet. If you like what you play, you can purchase individual characters a la carte, or upgrade to the full game.

Gwent

Remember Gwent, the card game from The Witcher 3 that you spent more time playing than you did tackling actual quests? That card game is now its own stand-alone experience, and one of the most addictive of the best free PS4 games we've listed. Building on the original Witcher 3 iteration, Gwent is a free-to-play collectible card game that's all about customizing your deck, summoning all kinds of cool attacks and spells, and outsmarting your opponent.

Let It Die

This entry on the best free PS4 games list is an over-the-top action game from the twisted mind of famed game creator Goichi "Suda51" Suda, Let It Die is essentially a highly stylized, wacky version of Dark Souls. You'll make your way up a tower filled with brutal enemies to fight and powerful gear to earn, each floor adding more and more challenge. When you die, your character will be reanimated in other players' games, turning your misfortune into another fearsome foe for someone else.

Because this is a Suda51 game, you'll do this all while taking advice from Uncle Death, a skateboard-riding Grim Reaper (yes, you read that right) and consuming dubious mushrooms to enhance your abilities before taking on some of the strangest looking bosses you'll ever see. If you like your action games difficult, deep and extremely weird, Let It Die will scratch that itch and then some.

Paladins

It's easy to pass off Paladins as a cheap Overwatch clone at first glance, but this team-based shooter has its own special quirks — and as its inclusion on the best free PS4 games list suggests, it costs nothing to play. Paladins stands out from the hero-shooter crowd by letting you customize your character via collectible cards, adding an extra level of strategy to the game's tried-and-true objective-based combat. You'll either be capturing points, pushing payloads into your opponent's base, or just defeating as many as you can in straight-up combat, enhanced by a blend of fantasy/sci-fi themes and designs.

With a rich fantasy aesthetic and an ever-growing roster of champions, Paladins is a great team shooter for folks who don't want to pony up the cash for Overwatch or dive headfirst into the well-established community of Team Fortress 2 — or for those who need a break from either one.

Star Trek Online

Star Trek Online is an online role-playing game that lets you live out every fantasy you've ever had about boldly going where no one has gone before, in the form of one of the best free PS4 games. This sci-fi space adventure lets you play as a human, as a classic Star Trek alien such as a Vulcan and Cardassian, or even as a member of your own custom alien race.

You'll engage in both starship combat and on-the-ground shoot-outs, all while upgrading your tech to become even more power and playing through a rich storyline that delivers plenty of new lore for hardcore Trekkies to sink their teeth into. While Star Trek Online lets you purchase in-game currency for things like outfits and ship skins, you can also experience the entirety of its story for free. There are expansion packs on offer too if you'd prefer to spend your money on extra content.

Warframe

Warframe has been around since the PS4's launch, and it remains on the best free PS4 games list because it's still evolving. This online sci-fi shooter casts you as a futuristic space ninja who commands their own Warframe: a remote-controlled robo-suit that has its own distinct attacks and abilities. You can team up with friends to tackle the game's story missions or test your strength in competitive multiplayer, fighting across a Solar System of the far future.

Warframe is constantly getting new characters and content, such as customizable spaceships, open-world sections, cinematic quests and of course extra weapons. All this content makes this game a great pick for folks who want to loot and shoot their way through a bunch of cool-looking sci-fi worlds. It's great if you're community-minded too, with one of the busiest fanbases around and an annual fan expo too.

How to choose the best free PS4 game for you

If you like the sound of one of the best free PS4 games we've put on this list, here are a few questions you can think over before hitting the download button.

One of the best ways to get a feel of what a game is about is to simply check the genre. While there's no reason why a game that's not like anything you've played before won't be to your tastes, it's worth checking what type of game each title labels itself as. It will give you a good idea of what mechanics to expect, so you aren't blindsided by a complicated combo system or left unsatisfied by a simplistic control scheme.

Some games give you everything they have to offer from the start, and hope you like them enough to spend some real money on them. Others are cut-down versions of paid products, which may result in locked-off content. Either way, it's likely that going for the free option means missing out on something If it's going to bother you not having access to all parts of the game, then steer clear or keep your credit card handy to rectify the situation.

The most crucial tip however is: don't get invested if it isn't fun. These are the best free PS4 games after all, emphasis on free. There's no price to pay and no consequences if you don't like one of these games after trying it out. Just play as many as you fancy until you find one you actually enjoy.
