What is this screen after pressing F12 during startup?

cafejose,

Well now that you've put out more information about your own existing skill set that puts a different light on things.

If you know how to change boot order in BIOS doing so in the BIOS component of UEFI will not seem at all unfamiliar to you.  In your screenshot the Windows Boot Manager is likely what you'll want to look at.

There's nothing wrong with exploring the various UEFI menus if you know how to exit without saving changes.  If you've done that in a BIOS-based system it's not much different, if at all different, in a UEFI system.  Take a look around.

I still know very little.  I have, at times in the past, explored some menu, like Setup menu, but I never did try to change the boot priority order.  I had, using Vista and XP machines, booted from startup into the boot device choosing menu in order to go to CD or DVD just for one session; and had a few times on those machines booted into Safe Mode.  I had also tried a few live linux CD's through starting machine, interupting any start of Windows, going to F12 or tapping some F key, which I forgot, to get immediately the boot device menu, and picked CD/DVD, to run the linux live disks.

Only very recently I have taken the insight that you can reach certain menus or screens, not by repeated tapping as soon as the screen goes blank; but by pressing F2 or F12 key when the computer first shows the brand name on the screen.

I STILL  KNOW ONLY VERY LITTLE, and so your warning was still important.

Inspiron

I have a Dell Inspiron 5537 running Windows 10. Yesterday I tried to get to the boot menu from the reboot process by pressing the F12 key when that message comes up on the screen. It never worked. I could get to the set up screens by pressing the F2 key. The F12 key works when booted up to change the volume so I don't think the key itself is broken. I wanted to make the laptop boot from a Macrium Reflect recovery disk to see if the disk was working (for another fun troubleshooting project on a Dell desktop). I searched and searched to find an answer to this problem with no luck. I did find a Dell response to a query about this saying that the reboot is often only a partial reboot to save time and I have noticed this on my laptop. Unfortunately the instructions for how to force a full reboot were for Windows 8 and didn't work on my computer.

I'd really like to know the answer to this in case I ever need to do boot from some other device (CD, USB).

Thanks for your help.

You must move the SSD that has the C:\ partition to the top of the list.  Also this drive should be internal and not USB connected.

Hi NN. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP here to help you.

For the modern UEFI BIOS' only Windows Boot Manager must be set first to boot at all times. For Legacy BIOS set the Windows hard drive/SSD first to boot.

If you have UEFI and installed to Legacy so that the Boot Menu key allows starting by triggering the hard drive, I would reinstall because using Legacy when you have a UEFI BIOS is like disconnecting all the safety features on a brand new car. Follow the illustrated steps here for doing the best possible Clean Install which should get you past all difficulties as it has hundreds of thousands of others who have followed the steps in this link and never come back to report another problem: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

If Windows Boot Manager for UEFI, or Windows hard drive for Legacy BIOS, is already set first to boot, then boot into the WIndows 10 Repair or Installation media to run Startup Repair: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanc...

If that fails then Rebuild the BCD from this tutorial that includes everything possible for Troubleshooting Windows 10 Failure to Start: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you'll wait to rate whether my post helped you, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
