A phenomenal agate with iridescent red, yellow, orange and green flash.

Author: Hobart M. King, PhD, GIA Graduate Gemologist

Fire Agate from Arizona

Arizona Fire Agate: The botryoidal hemispheres in this cabochon are very small, with most less than one millimeter in diameter. This specimen measures 8 mm x 12 mm and weighs 1.77 carats.

What Is Fire Agate?

Fire agate is a rare and interesting gem of unusual beauty. It is a brown agate that reflects bright flashes of iridescent yellow, red, orange and green from hemispherical surfaces within the stone. These hemispherical features are a characteristic crystal habit of agate known as a "botryoidal habit".

Fire agate is a phenomenal gem. In gemology, a phenomenal gem is one that reacts with the light that enters it to produce an interesting optical effect. In fire agate, the phenomenon is the iridescent colors. They change as the gem is moved, as the light source is moved, or as the head of the observer is moved. The phenomenon of fire agate is reminiscent of the play-of-color of precious opal, yet it is completely different. The name "fire" is used, but the color is not caused by dispersion - the phenomenon that causes the "fire" seen in diamond.

Fire agate is all about the dynamic iridescent colors.

In fire agate, the botryoidal habit was built as many ultra-thin layers of agate were deposited, one upon another, to produce the unusual shapes that you see in the gem today. Some of these layers of ultra-thin agate were coated with tiny particles of goethite, an iron hydroxide mineral. The colorful "fire" is thought to be produced by interference between light rays as they are reflected and refracted by the ultra-thin layers composed of goethite and agate. [1]

Fire Agate from Arizona

Arizona Fire Agate: This cabochon has botryoidal hemispheres which are much larger than those in the specimen at the top of this page. As a result, it is a thicker cab. This specimen measures 9 mm x 12 mm and weighs over 4 carats.

Gemology of Fire Agate

Fire agate is not a widely known gem. This is because it is a rare material that has never been heavily promoted to the public. Each stone cut from fire agate is different. The size and shape of each stone is dictated by the properties of the rough.

The people who cut fire agate study the rough material, then do their best to produce an attractive gem. Because of this, fire agate is not a gem suitable for manufacturing thousands of identical pieces of commercial jewelry. Instead it is a stone that is set into jewelry by a person who will craft a special setting for each and every stone.

Fire agate is most often found in custom and designer jewelry shops that are located in the same regions where the agate is mined. There it is sold as a locally produced gem - and many people buy it for that reason. Fire agate is a gem that is known and purchased by local people, visitors to the area, and collectors who want piece of jewelry with a rare, beautiful or unusual gemstone.

Fire agate has a Mohs hardness of 7, which makes it suitable for most types of jewelry. Large cabochons make beautiful pendants and pins. Smaller matched pieces make unique earrings. Many men like the brown color and wear fire agate in rings and tie tacks. Spectacular specimens find their way into museum collections and the collections of gem and mineral collectors.

The largest number of reported fire agate localities is in Arizona, where the material has been popular with jewelry designers, lapidaries, gem collectors and mineral collectors for about fifty years. fire agateIntroduction to the Meaning and Uses of Fire Agate

Fire Agate, known as the spiritual flame of absolute perfection, carries a great mystery locked inside its deep brown crystal. You need only touch the stone and fiery embers ignite. Peer into its depths and flames leap within its chambers. Study it closely and it will almost show you its secrets. Almost.

Fire Agate is a variety of Chalcedony, a mineral of the Quartz family. It has a translucent deep reddish-brown base, with flashes of orange, red, green and gold that appears as living flames within the gem. Its iridescent colors are caused by light interference on thin layers of iron oxide or limonite crystals within the Chalcedony.

Historically, Fire Agate was used in alchemy because it was believed to contain the essence of fire. In many traditions sacred to fire deities, it encouraged timid adults and shy children to speak up and not be ignored or bullied. It is a stone of integrity, encouraging high standards of behavior in self and others, and promotes passion in love and in life. [Eason, 69]

Metaphysically, Agate has a lower intensity and vibrates to a slower frequency than other stones, but is highly regarded as a stabilizing and strengthening influence. Agate stabilizes the aura, eliminating and transforming negative energies. Its cleansing effect is powerful at all levels. Agate stabilizes the aura, eliminating and transforming negative energies. Its cleansing effect is powerful at all levels. [Melody, 82][Hall, 39]

The brown and red shades of Fire Agate stimulate the Base Chakra. The Base, or Root Chakra, is located at the base of the spine, and controls the energy for kinesthetic feeling and movement. It is the foundation of physical and spiritual energy for the body. When physically out of balance the symptoms will manifest themselves as lethargy, low levels of activity, low enthusiasm, and a need for constant stimulation. When its spiritual energies are out of balance, you will feel flighty, disconnected from reality, and distant. When the Base Chakra is in balance, the physical body regains its strength and stamina, and the spiritual energy is rekindled in the form of security and sense of one’s own power. It often leads to independence and spontaneous leadership.

The gold and orange shades of Fire Agate identify with the Sacral Chakra, or Second Chakra, located below the naval and above the pubic bone at the front of the pelvis. It controls the flow of energy and is the center of gravity of the body. It is the center of the Life Force of the body, and controls the flow of information from the body to the mind and from the mind to the body. Gut feelings, intuition, and other “non-linear” communication comes from this chakra. When it is out of balance the symptoms will manifest themselves as confusion, over dependency on others, repression of feelings, inability to feel joy, fear of sensuality or sex, and frustration. When it is in balance you have grace, feel pleasure in life, find you are flexible and can “go with the flow” and do so in good spirit.

The green shades within Fire Agate are associated with the Heart Chakra, located near the center of the breastbone. It regulates our interaction with the external world and controls what we embrace and what we resist. It gives us the balancing ability to be ourselves within the environment. When the heart chakra is out of balance you may feel either controlling or controlled in a relationship, and become critical of the little foibles of others. You may well find yourself having inappropriately strong emotional responses to everyday external stimuli. Green energy resolves blockages and re-balances the heart chakra, helping us understand our own needs and emotions clearly. We can deal with the ebbs and flows of emotional relationships, understand their cyclic nature, and accept the changes.

Feng Shui usesFire Agate Feng Shui

Fire Agate utilizes Fire energy. Fire energy is the energy of enthusiasm, warmth, brightness, illumination and activity. It is Yang in nature. It is the energy of heat, action, emotion and passion – of ideas, of concepts, and sex. It is traditionally associated with the south area of a home or room, and with the fame and reputation area of your dwelling. Use its energy to give your life the boost it needs to enhance your standing in the community and within your family. Red gemstones should be used sparingly, to bring the sun’s power and the fire element’s energy to your space. Use orange crystals as an accent and as an accessory in rooms where high energy is needed.

Fire Agate utilizes Wood energy, the energy of growth, expansion, new beginnings, nourishment and health. It enhances vitality, brings abundance, and keeps us growing physically. Use brown or green crystals to enhance any space used for eating, in the room of a small child, or in a place of your home where you are beginning a new project. Wood energy is traditionally associated with the East and Southeast areas of a home or room. It is associated with the Family and Health area, and the Prosperity and Abundance area.

Fire Agates also utilize Earth energy, the light brown energy of stability, patience, honesty, balance, and resourcefulness. It is our home energy, the energy of the ground upon which we live, the mountains, plains, shores, and valleys. It is our holdfast in the black cold universe. Use light brown crystals to enhance any space that is a resting place, where you need to be firmly in control, safe, and protected. Earth energy is traditionally associated with the Northeast and Southwest areas of a home or room. These are the Skills and Knowledge area, and the Love and Relationship area. Crystals, clusters of light brown crystals, or small colored crystals on brown rock work well.

Lore_and _legend of crystalsFire Agate in Ancient Lore and Legend

Fire Agate was used in alchemy because it was believed to contain the essence of fire. In many traditions sacred to fire deities, it encouraged timid adults and shy children to speak up and not be ignored or bullied. [Eason, 69]

Ancient Romans valued the Agate for its reputed medicinal and talismanic properties. Powdered and mixed with water, it was said to counteract serpents’ venom. Pliny, a Roman historian, quoted the Magii as teaching in Persia that storms might be averted by burning Agates. [Fernie, 311-312]

Agates were believed to make their wearers agreeable, persuasive, and give them the favor of God, guarding them from all dangers, and enabling them to vanquish earthly obstacles, such as high winds and lightning. [Kunz, 51] Ancient seafarers used Agate in amulets of protection from the fury of the surging ocean. [Kunz, 39]

The wearing of Agate was believed to be a cure for insomnia and was thought to induce pleasant dreams. [Kunz, 52]

Legends claim Agate to have the power to secure the wearer from danger and to protect children from falling, and to endow their owners with strength, courage and the ability to heal fears. [Mella, 68]

Agate has a rich history of divinely revealed images within its natural veining, inclusions and markings. Such images as the Virgin Mary, Jesus, John the Baptist, angels and various other human forms have manifested themselves in these natural works of art and are found in churches and museums around the world.

Agate is believed to be the middle stone in the third row in the breastplate of the High Priest. [Kunz, 276]

Agate is a semi-precious gemstone formed by relatively recent volcanic activity. It is outwardly similar in appearance to quartz, but also shows interesting swirls, bubbles and patterns.

Fire agate, a variety of chalcedony, is a semi-precious natural gemstone discovered so far only in certain areas of central and northern Mexico and the southwestern United States (New Mexico, Arizona and California).
What is Fire Agate, And Where to Find it?
Fire agate by Photographer Thomas Shearer

Fire agates have beautiful iridescent rainbow colors, similar to opal, with a measurement of hardness on the Mohs scale of between 5 and 7 which reduces the occurrence of scratching when polished gemstones are set in jewelry.
The vibrant iridescent rainbow colors found within fire agates, created by the Schiller effect as found in mother-of-pearl, is caused by the alternating silica and iron oxide layers which diffract and allow light to pass and form an interference of colors within the microstructure layering of the stone causing the fire effect for which it is named.

How Fire Agate and Chalcedony Form

The fire agate and chalcedony of the Southern New Mexico–Arizona border area is formed when low pressure and low temperature epithermal hydrothermal waters (50°-200°C / 122°-392°F) carrying colloidal SiO2and iron oxides are injected into cavities in volcanic rocks such as gas bubbles in flow rocks, irregular-shaped vug fillings, or along fault or bedding plane fractures.
Approximately 24-36 million years ago these areas were subjected to massive volcanic activity during the Tertiary Period. The fire agates were formed during this period of volcanism when hot water, saturated with silica and iron oxide, repeatedly filled cracks and bubbles in the surrounding rock.

About Fire Agate - History and Introduction

Fire agate is a rare variety of layered chalcedony quartz which exhibits a fiery iridescent effect. It is a natural gemstone found only in the surrounding areas of the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico. Iridescence is a unique optical phenomenon caused by light diffraction. As light passes through different layers of material, a prism effect causes light to separate into various spectral colors. With fire agate, the alternating layers are composed of limonite or goethite iron oxide and silica. It is the unique internally layered composition that distinguishes fire agate from any other variety of agate.

Fire agate was formed through volcanic activity that took place during the Tertiary Period, millions of years ago. Certain areas were subjected to extreme volcanic activity, which repeatedly caused hot water saturated with colloidal silica and iron oxide to seep into the cracks and cavities of rocks below the Earth's surface. As the solution cooled, the silicate and iron oxide began to grow layers of chalcedony, typically forming botryoidal; grape-like formations. Since it is the iron oxide that is responsible for the brownish color of fire agate, as the solution is depleted of iron oxide, colorless chalcedony continues to form, producing the typical brown and white rough fire agate commonly found today.

Identifying Fire Agate

Fire agate is a limonite-bearing layered form of chalcedony or microcrystalline quartz with a botryoidal, or grape-like formation. Like other chalcedony quartz gemstones, fire agate has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale; a specific gravity of 2.59 to 2.67; and a refractive index of 1.530 to 1.540. It has no cleavage and can be identified by its silicon dioxide composition. It is distinguished from other agate by its remarkable iridescence caused by light diffraction, which is a consequence of its layered structure. The light diffraction results in reflections of light in various spectral colors unlike any other variety of agate.

Fire Agate Origin and Gemstone Sources

Fire agate is found in only a few locations around the world. The most significant sources are Mexico and the Southwestern United States. Fire agate deposits are found in the areas between Kingman, Arizona and Needles, California, as well as the surrounding areas of the Colorado River.

Mexican fire agate comes from the mines of Calvillo in the state of Aguascalientes, Mexico. There are 23 known mines near the mountains of Calvillo. Fire agate can also found in San Luis Potosi and in Chihuahua, Mexico. The fire agate from San Luis Potosi is known only to exhibit golden fire; rainbow-like colors are extremely rare due to a distinct mineral composition.

Buying Fire Agate and Determining Fire Agate Value

Fire Agate Color

Fire agate has a brown to near-blackish body color, similar to that of chocolate opal. The brown base color results from the iron oxide content. When viewed under light, iridescent effects can encompass a rainbow of colors including red, gold, green, blue and occasionally, blue-violet.

Fire Agate Clarity and Luster

Fire agate is typically translucent to opaque, with translucent specimens being most desirable. Like all agate, fire agate tends to have a slightly waxy to dull luster when shaped and polished.

Fire Agate Cut and Shape

Fire agate is typically plain-cut into fancy freeform shapes and slabs. Stones must be perfectly cut in order to maximize iridescence. The cutting of fire agate requires the careful grinding and polishing away of surface layers, essentially reversing nature's long process of formation. Cutting away too much can kill the 'fire' completely, whilst removing too little results in a very dull and unattractive stone.

Fire Agate Treatment

Fire agate is not known to be treated or enhanced in any way.

Fire agate is just one of the many varieties of agate stone available today. Many agate variety classifications are based on optical properties, while others are classified based on inclusions, mining locality or geographic origin. Locality based trade names are generally only used by collectors. In many cases, a single agate specimen may even be classified under two or more different trade names.

Agate is a form of cryptocrystalline quartz. Cryptocrystalline quartz is one of two primary branches of quartz gemstones (macrocrystalline is the other). Both quartz branches share the same chemical composition but form with differing crystal structures. Amethyst, citrine and smoky quartz are a few of the more popular examples of macrocrystalline quartz gemstones.

Fire Agate Jewelry Back to Top

High quality fire agate can be as impressive in its play of color as fine black opal, and fire agate is much more affordable although it is significantly more durable. Fire agate is quartz with a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, so it is considered quite suitable for any kind of jewelry, including rings for daily wear.

Cutting fire agate is painstaking work and since very few pieces can be cut into traditional shapes and calibrated sizes, it is very rarely found in any mainstream jewelry. Owing to the variety of fancy freeform shapes, it is most often used for creating interesting pendants, pins or brooches.

Note: Buy colored gemstones by size and not by carat weight. Colored stones vary in size-to-weight ratio. Some stones are larger and others are smaller than diamond by weight in comparison.

Fire Agate Jewelry Care and Cleaning

How to clean your gemstonesFire agate is a variety of quartz. All quartz is considered to be quite durable compared to most other gemstones. Fire agate can be easily cleaned using warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Be sure to rinse it well to remove any soapy residue. Even though it has excellent hardness and durability, there are still a variety of other gems capable of scratching fire agate, including diamond, sapphire, spinel and topaz.

As with most gemstones, avoid the use of any harsh household chemicals including bleach and hydrofluoric-sulfuric acid. Most agate stones are quite porous, which allows them to be easily stained, through absorption of other chemicals and colors. Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat, as heating can permanently damage color. When storing, wrap your stones using a soft cloth and place them inside a fabric-lined box for added protection. Always remove any gems and jewelry before exercising or playing any sports.

How fire agate is formed?

It is a type of chalcedony (SiO2) which contains multiple, extremely thin layers of the iron oxide minerals of Goethite (FeO(OH)) and Limonite (FeO(OH)·nH20) imbedded within, and commonly completely enclosed by, semi-transparent to translucent layers of cryptocrystalline chalcedony. When cut and polished down to the layers containing the iron oxides, the stone displays a metallic, shimmering iridescence known as the Schiller Effect, where light is reflected and refracted off the various layers containing the Goethite and Limonite iron oxides to give the exquisite play of colors—or “fire”—for which the gemstone is named. Colors displayed by the “fire” vary greatly, the most common being shades of orangish brown, but also all shades and tones of yellow, orange, red, and green, and more rarely, purples and blues.
