9 Things That Increased My Accounting Salary By Over 100% Over The Last 6 Years!

Salary of a Finance Controller

By Fred Decker

A company's controllers report to senior management on financial matters.

Controllers hold one of the most important positions in the financial management of a company. They review data generated by accounting staff, then turn it into reports that executives use to formulate budgets and lay out corporate strategies. Controllers also oversee the process of filing financial reports to governments and other regulatory authorities. Salaries vary with seniority and the company's size, but are usually generous.

Small Companies

Staffing agency Robert Half Financial & Accounting publishes an annual survey of salaries among accounting and financial staff across the United States. Its 2012 Salary Guide shows assistant controllers earning salaries from $54,000 to $84,750 a year in corporations with annual revenues of up to $100M. Divisional controllers in companies of the same size earn annual salaries ranging from $77,750 to $112,500. Controllers in this segment reported average salaries ranging from $67,000 to $105,750 a year, while corporate controllers earned annual salaries from a low of $81,750 to a high of $121,750.

Mid-Sized and Large Companies

Controllers' salaries increase with the size of a company, as do their responsibilities. In mid-sized corporations with sales of $100 million to $250 million, annual salaries range from $76,750 to $97,750 for an assistant controller. Divisional controllers reported 2011 incomes ranging from $100,000 to $127,250. For controllers, the range was $94,250 to $124,750 a year, and for corporate controllers salaries ranged from $109,000 to $138,750. In corporations with sales above $250M, assistant controllers earned $91,750 to $135,750 a year. Divisional controllers' salaries ranged from $113,750 to $163,500 and controllers earned $110,000 to $175,250. Corporate controllers in these high-volume companies reported annual salaries ranging from $125,000 to $190,000.

Regional Variation

Because salaries tend to vary widely by location, the Robert Half survey provides adjustment factors for 130 urban centers in the United States. For example, New York City has a multiplier of 141 percent, so if the base salary for a given position is $100,000, the corresponding salary in New York is $141,000. In El Paso the multiplier is 70, so the same position in that city would pay $70,000. In Minneapolis the multiplier is 105.3, yielding a salary of $105,300. The multiplier for both Tucson and Salt Lake City is 100, meaning the national averages apply without conversion.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics groups controllers in a category called "financial managers," and projects job growth of 9 percent for the category between 2010 and 2020. However, Robert Half is more bullish about the prospects for controllers. The 2012 report lists controllers among its in-demand positions, citing the tightened regulatory environment and greater reporting needs.
