Sherwin-Williams Company is a Cleveland, Ohio–based company in the paint and coating manufacturing industry. The company primarily engages in the manufacture, distribution, and sale of paints, coatings, floorcoverings, and related products to professional, industrial, commercial, and retail customers primarily in North and South America and Europe. At the end of , Sherwin-Willams had operations in over countries.[4]

Sherwin-Williams dates from , when Cleveland bookkeeper Henry Sherwin invested in Truman Dunham & Co., a paint distributorship.[5] After the partnership dissolved in , he formed Sherwin, Williams, & Co. with Edward Williams and A.T. Osborn.[5][6] For its first factory, in the company acquired a cooperage in Cleveland from Standard Oil.[5]

Sherwin-Williams incorporated in Ohio on July 16, , two years after Osborn sold his interest in the company while retaining the retail operations.[5] The company grew through acquisitions and expansions in the late 19th and early 20th century.[5] In the early s, the company became the largest coatings manufacturer in the U.S.[5]

Sherwin-Williams experienced a downturn in the s, and Gulf and Western Industries unsuccessfully attempted to take over in that time.[5][7] The company recovered by fending off the raid, and through a series of acquisitions in the s and s as well as divestment of non-coatings businesses.[5][7] One such acquisition on July 5, was Leighs Paints based in Bolton UK, a manufacturer of intumescent paints and high performance coatings.[8] In , it employed 18, people, including 3, in Ohio.[5] By , the company operated more than 2, stores.[5]

Global headquarters[edit]

In , Sherwin-Williams moved its headquarters to Cleveland's Midland Building, where it would stay for over 75 years.[5]

In September , the company said it would move its headquarters to a larger site,[9] and in February , confirmed it would remain in the Cleveland area.[10] That month, the company also began work on a new R&D center in Brecksville, OH.[11] The new headquarters's location was clarified in March , with the company committing to constructing a new building complex, also in Downtown Cleveland, expected to open in [12]

Notable innovations[edit]

In , Sherwin-Williams started selling ready-mixed paint.[5] Previously, consumers bought paint ingredients that they themselves would mix together.[5]

In the s, Sherwin-Williams introduced Kem-Tone, a water-based fast-drying interior paint.[5] In , the American Chemical Society named the product a National Historic Chemical Landmark.[13][verification needed]

In , the first paint registered as microbicidal with the United States Environmental Protection Agency was brought to market by Sherwin-Williams.[14][15][16]

Corporate structure[edit]

Founded by Henry Sherwin and Edward Williams[17] in Cleveland in , the company operates through three segments: The Americas Group, Consumer Brands Group, and Performance Coatings Group.[18][4]

Americas Group[edit]

Americas Group was the first section of the company to be established, in These stores market and sell Sherwin-Williams branded architectural paints and coatings, industrial and marine products, floorcovering, and related equipment and supplies. As of the end of , the Americas Group had expanded to 4, stores, including more than floorcovering centers.[18][19]

Consumer Brands Group[edit]

The Consumer Brands Group develops, manufactures, and distributes various paints, coatings, and related products, under the brand names of Anthony Angelillo, Bestt Liebco, Cabot, Dupli-Color, Duron, Dutch Boy, Frazee, Geocel, Guangdong Huarun Paints, H&C, HGTV Home, Kool Seal, Krylon, MAB, Martin-Senour, Mautz, Minwax, Pratt & Lambert, Purdy, Ronseal, Thompson's WaterSeal, Uniflex, Valspar, Wattyl, and White Lightning to third party customers in addition to overseeing the operations maintained by The Americas Group.[20][18][21][22][23][24][25]

On August 28, , Sherwin Williams purchased Columbia Paint & Coatings.[26] On July 6, , Sherwin-Williams acquired Leighs Paints, based in Bolton UK, manufacturers of intumescent and high performance industrial coatings.[27] In late , Sherwin Williams began the process of purchasing the Comex Group. Comex was the 4th largest paint manufacturer in North America.[28] After Mexican antitrust regulators voted against the deal twice, Sherwin-Williams bought Comex's US and Canadian divisions for $ million on September 16, [29] PPG, US-based paint and coating company, acquired Comex's Mexican division for $ billion. In March , it was announced that Valspar would be acquired for $ billion U.S. dollars. The merger was finalized 1 June [30]

Performance Coatings Group[edit]

The Performance Coatings Group sells coatings and finishes to industrial, wood furniture manufacturing, marine, packaging, and automotive markets in more than countries.[31] The Group also contains Valspar's automotive refinishes business.[32]

California lead paint lawsuit[edit]

Further information: Lead paint

In January , the Santa Clara County Superior Court ruled that Sherwin-Williams, NL Industries and ConAgra were jointly and severally liable for $ billion, to be paid into a lead paint abatement fund to be used to remove lead paint from older housing.[33][34] The judge ruled that the paint companies manufactured, marketed, and sold lead paint without disclosing the health risks to the consumers in spite of "actual and constructive knowledge that it was harmful."[35][36] In March Sherwin-Williams was denied a new trial.[37]

As per their annual report, Sherwin-Williams considers this case without merit and will appeal the decision. The process may take another two years.[38] The disposition of The People v. ConAgra Grocery Products Company et al. in the California 6th Appellate District Court on November 14, is that

the judgment is reversed, and the matter is remanded to the trial court with directions to (1) recalculate the amount of the abatement fund to limit it to the amount necessary to cover the cost of remediating pre homes, and (2) hold an evidentiary hearing regarding the appointment of a suitable receiver. The Plaintiff shall recover its costs on appeal.[39]

In July , a $ million settlement was reached.[40]

Pennsylvania lead paint lawsuit[edit]

In , multiple counties in Pennsylvania sued Sherwin-Williams over lead paint matters.[41] Sherwin-Williams attempted to counter-sue, but that attempt was denied in October ,[42][43] and the denial was upheld in July [44]

Water-based paint lawsuit[edit]

Starting in , businessman John Tyczki entered into an agreement with Sherwin-Williams on the basis of assurances provided by Sherwin-Williams about its water-based paint products. When the products failed to live up to these assurances, causing ongoing problems for his business, Tyczki sued Sherwin-Williams and was awarded $M.[45]

Attempted diversions and national boycotts[edit]

On April 9, , Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and representing attorneys uncovered that Sherwin-Williams tried to "shift the blame to contaminated water in an effort" to avoid having to pay tens of millions of dollars in settlements. Almost children had been affected by the potentially fatal lead poisoning.[46][47]

Advertising dispute[edit]

A billboard near the center-field fence of the Los Angeles Angel Stadium featured a giant paint can. In , the owner of the billboard offered to donate $1 million to the Angels Baseball Foundation if a home run ball landed in the can on the fly, though that condition was not noted on the billboard.[48] On September 19, , a home run ball landed in the can after bouncing. Some commentators were upset that a donation wasn't made "due to a lame technicality", causing a public relations embarrassment.[49][50]

New Jersey pollution lawsuit[edit]

In December , Sherwin-Williams was sued by the State of New Jersey for discharging industrial waste from three sites and failing to disclose the pollution to the state's Department of Environmental Protection.[51]

California underpayment lawsuit[edit]

In May , Sherwin-Williams agreed to pay $M to settle a lawsuit brought by workers in California alleging underpayment of wages and failure to provide obligatory meal or rest breaks.[52][53]

Ohio underpayment lawsuit[edit]

In July , Sherwin-Williams was sued in Ohio for breaching the Fair Labor Standards Act by underpaying staff.[54][55] Though the case was dismissed in December by Ohio Northern District Court.[56]

Firing of Tony Piloseno[edit]

In November , the company fired employee Tony Piloseno, who'd amassed over million viewers on his TikTok paint mixing channel, Tonesterpaints, for alleged misconduct. The company was criticized for their perceived mishandling of the situation with critics believing the company failed to realize the marketing opportunity they'd just lost.[57] Piloseno received multiple offers of employment from Sherwin-Williams' industry rivals and took up a position with Florida Paints where he will have his own art studio and develop his own custom range of paints.[58][59][60] Commentators pointed out the differing reaction the company had after going viral when compared to other companies such as Ocean Spray, who had positively reacted to going viral on the TikTok platform.[61]

Awards and recognition[edit]

On June 20, , Computerworld named The Sherwin-Williams Company the #58 Best Place to Work in IT.[62]

In , Sherwin-Williams was recognized as the most used brand as well as the winner for brand familiarity and quality rating in the Paints category by Builder magazine.[63]

As of , Sherwin-Williams was ranked th on the Fortune list of the largest United States corporations by revenue.[64]

Who Has Better Paint, Sherwin Williams Or Home Depot?

While the Behr best-selling Marquee paint costs a generous $42+ per gallon, Sherwin Williams equivalent costs $$93 per gallon.

Therefore, if you’re conscious of the initial price, Home Depot may be a better option for you.

Sherwin Williams is reportedly used predominantly by contractors who are painting for large clients, whereas Behr is more popular amongst homeowners.

The consistency of Behr’s option was deemed much thicker than Sherwin Williams’ alternative.

Therefore, painters should be cautious of the brush they are using, should they choose a Behr Marquee paint.
