my 2007 2.5 did the same

the abs unit is the same - there are firms out there that will rebuild them. But, crucually, its the pump they rebuild, not the controller.

the thing to do is to take the number off the front of your dsc, its a big number that i m betting is 3452 6769164-02 - coz thats what mine is.

the problem i found was that the 3 firms that repair these couldnt repair mine, for any cost.

I ended up using the spares finder websites, the ones that contact all the spares companies in the country, and eventually after a few months, one turned up, actually 2 turned up on the same day... it cost £280

its in my kitchen waiting to be fitted

dont buy a dsc unit unless it has the exact same number as yours - i did that, it dosent work - i now have a perfectly working dsc that will work for a different z4 and i got a bill from the garage to boot....

oh and i dont think your speedo fault is connected, mine still works

you can - and i did, have an auto electrician turn the lights off on the dashboard, which means you can mot the car whilst you look for a reasonably priced dsc controller

it dosent have to be a £1600 problem, my dealer wanted £2200, so you are ahead on that front :-)

Cause I think mine may beep in the wet in a manner that they don't in the dry, but the warning increments still function as they near an object. Never occurred to me to consider it a original problem, just that the rain reflects the light back to the sensor.

The scanner we used is a Foxwell for BMW. Many scanners can allow you to diagnose BMW-specific fault codes.

An extra step you can perform to verify that your BMW wheel speed sensors work is to use the scanner to display actual value from all four of the wheel speed sensor.

A generic OBD2 scanner will not read/clear BMW DSC or ABS module fault codes. Before you replace the ABS sensor, consider swapping front wheel speed sensors and recheck failure codes.

Clear any stored code and monitor the codes that return.

  • The fault code has moved to the opposite wheel; it confirms the problem is the ABS sensor.
  • The fault code remains with the same wheel/sensor. You may have a wiring issue.

Another method to test BMW wheel speed sensors is to use a digital multimeter and measure resistance.

Remove each wheel one at a time. Disconnect the ABS sensor wire and measure the resistance of each sensor.

This will help you determine which has failed. Usually, only one of the sensors fails at a time.

How to Replace a BMW ABS Wheel Sensor

  1. Loosen up the lug nut. Jack up the vehicle and secure it with jack stands. Remove the wheel.remove bmw wheel to change abs sensor

  4. Disconnect the ABS weed sensor wire. The connector is held in place with two small locking tabs. Press the two tabs, then pull apart the connector.   5. Remove the bolt that secures the ABS sensor to your BMW hub. On most BMWs, this will be a 5mm hex bolt.bmw wheel speed sensor location bolt size
  6. Remove the abs sensor wire from the front strut bracket.
  7. Install the new BMW wheel speed sensor making sure the wire is routed correctly. If you route the wire the wrong way, it will get stretched and damaged when the wheel is turned.
  8. Clean any rust from the ABS wheel speed sensor hole using a wire brush. Insert the ABS wheel speed sensor into the wheel hub and screw the bolt.
  9. Tighten the ABS wheel speed sensor bolt to 10Nm.

Once you are done replacing the ABS sensor, start the car and turn the steering wheel to the left, then to the right. Repeat the procedure a couple of times.

As you start driving the vehicle, your ABS / DSC / TSC / Brake lights should reset if no other fault codes are present.

Note: The codes may still be stored in the DSC module, but they will change from Present to Stored status.

Cleaning BMW Wheel Speed Sensor

In a few cases, the sensor's tip can collect dirt and debris, which prevents the sensor from operating properly.

Remove the sensor and clean dirt and any metal particles from the tip of the sensor.

Make sure to take the wheels off and look at your BMW ABS speed sensor wires as well.

If any of the insulation is cracked or bare wire exposed, replace the sensors.

If you replaced your BMW wheel speed sensor and still have a fault code for a bad ABS wheel speed sensor, check the following.

  • Check wires: Check ABS speed sensor wire in the wheel well. The wires may be accidentally pinched or exposed if the insulation is damaged. Visibly check the wire from the connector to the ABS module.
  • Bad ABS Pump/Module: A defective ABS module can also cause the ABS sensor. The module is easy to replace, but the part itself is quite expensive. A cheaper solution is to remove your existing ABS module and send it for repair to a company that offers a BMW ABS wheel speed sensor.
  • Sensors: Lateral, yaw rate sensors could also cause an ABS/DSC fault.
  • Ground: Bad ground connection for ABS module
  • Cluster: Defective instrument cluster
  • Fuses/Relays: Check ABS relay and fuse
  • Brake light switch: Mounted above the brake pedal or in the master brake cylinder.
  • Wheel bearing: Broken tooth on wheel bearing can trigger BMW Brake ABS DSC lights to come.
  • SAS: The steering angle sensor may be defective or need to be calibrated.

BMW X5 (05 Reg). Question about possibly faulty parking sensors.

Hi all

Firstly, thanks to the guys who commented on my previous post (faulty Park Lights). That problem is sorted now thanks to those guys.

Because of that brilliant advice I'm gonna see if anyone can help me again with this problem.

As stated I have a 05 BMW X5. For no reason about 3 weeks ago the parking sensors started acting strange. Here's the problem...

For the past 7 months (since I have had the car) I haven't really took much notice of the parking sensors. I just took them for granted. I'm sure that when I approach an object at the FRONT of my car the warning sound comes from the FRONT of the dash. Similarly, when I am reversing and getting close to an object at my rear the warning sound seems to come from the REAR of the car. I'm sure this is how they are supposed to work and indeed they worked fine for ages.

All this was OK until recently...

For the sake of ease of explanation, please imagine I'm in a completely empty field (so people don't assume false objects etc could be triggering the problem).

Problem...

As soon as I put the car in REVERSE, the parking sensor light (on the centre console near the other buttons) goes mental and flashes and the warning sound starts beeping from the FRONT of the car. Even though the car is REVERSING the warning sound comes from the FRONT??? !!!!!!?? But alas, I am in an empty space, so how could ANYTHING be triggering ANY of the sensors? There should be no noise or flashing button!

So, imagine I am now in a built up area. The parking sensors just don't work. It's the same story when I put it in reverse (Sound from the front, flashing button etc). When I drive close to something at the front they don't work. Same with reversing.

So, by coincidence, yesterday, I had the Plastic Wheel arch replaced (because a few months ago I had damaged it on a high kerb). When I went to collect the car the garage had washed the car. Lo and behold, when I drove away the parking sensors were working properly again! So, I assumed that one of the sensors was dirty and the wash by the Garage had cleared it. However, just now they've gone faulty again with the same fault.

As it stands now, none of the sensors actually work and the problem with the Sound coming from the FRONT when I reverse is back again.

With regard to the bit about the field etc I am just trying to make it clear that the problem actually occurs when there are NO obstructions anywhere (ie empty field for example).

Any advice guys???
