Buying guide for Best women's Schwinn bikes

When you're looking for a new bike, it makes sense to opt for one made by a trusted manufacturer with an excellent reputation for producing quality, reliable bikes. You can choose from all kinds of women's Schwinn bikes, so there's an option for you whether you're a competitive road cyclist or you simply want to go for the occasional weekend bike ride with your family.

First of all, you'll need to decide whether you want a road bike, mountain bike, hybrid bike, cruiser bike, or commuter bike. Once you've figured that out, it's time to find the right size bike for a perfect fit. Then you can look into details such as suspension, brakes, frame materials, and color.

Luckily, you're in the right place to learn about all these features, plus more. We've also compiled a list of our top five women's Schwinn bikes, one of which might take your fancy.

Key considerations

Bike types

All women's Schwinn bikes fit into one of five categories: road bikes, mountain bikes, hybrid bikes, cruiser bikes, and commuter bikes.

Road bikes: Road bikes have thin tires, a light frame, and dropped handlebars to encourage a forward-leaning position. All this means that road bikes can go very quickly on smooth, paved roads, but they don't perform well on uneven surfaces.

Mountain bikes: Mountain bikes are designed for people who want to ride up and down rocky hillsides, across muddy, unpaved trails, and more or less anywhere off-road. As such, they have thick tires with plenty of tread for increased grip, suspension systems for a smoother ride over rough terrain, and straight handlebars with a raised seat for an upright riding position.

Hybrid bikes: These bikes are partway between road bikes and mountain bikes, making them good all-rounders. They can go fairly quickly on paved roads but also handle light off-roading well. They have thinner wheels than mountain bikes for increased speed but an upright riding position for improved control.

Cruiser bikes: Cruiser bikes are designed for casual cycling. They're great if you want to get around in a relaxed fashion without too much concern about speed. They have fat tires for stability and a wide, plush seat for comfort. They're usually single speed, so there's no need to stress about being in the right gear.

Commuter bikes: These bikes are primarily designed for people who want to cycle to and from work, but they're also great for general cycling in an urban environment. They have a tough frame to stand up to the rigors of city cycling, and they may have fenders to keep water and dirt from splashing on you, so you can arrive at your destination clean and presentable.

You'll find two possible size scenarios when it comes to women's Schwinn bikes: some bikes are available in one size only, while others offer a range of sizes from extra small to extra large.

One-size: These women's Schwinn bikes are designed so that they'll fit most adult women of an average height (64 inches is the average in America). If your height is within a few inches of this, you can expect a one-size Schwinn bike to fit you perfectly.

Multiple sizes: If your chosen women's Schwinn bike has a range of size options, there's a chart to help you choose the correct size for you.

  • Extra small: 60 to 63 inches tall
  • Small: 63 to 67 inches tall
  • Medium: 67 to 70 inches tall
  • Large: 70 to 73 inches
  • Extra large: 73 to 76 inches tall

Your women’s Schwinn bike may have either twist shifters or trigger shifters to change gears. One isn’t necessarily better than the other, but many cyclists have a preference.

Frame materials

Women's Schwinn bikes have either a steel, aluminum, or carbon fiber frame.

  • Steel is strong and has some natural shock-absorbing properties, but it’s heavy.
  • Aluminum is lighter than steel but still very strong. It's a common material since it's affordable but light enough for bikes that need to go fast.
  • Carbon fiber is the lightest of all. It's also the most expensive, so it’s generally found only on high-end road bikes.

Some women's Schwinn bikes are available in several colors, while others only come in one color choice. While we wouldn't say color is more important than any other features, you might as well pick the color you like best if you have the option to do so.

A suspension system helps absorb shocks, so it’s a common feature on bikes designed for off-road use, such as mountain and hybrid bikes. Suspension forks are the main suspension option on women's Schwinn bikes.

Did You Know?

If you find your bike doesn't fit quite right, you can change out the handlebar stem and saddle seat post to adjust your distance from the ground and reach to the handlebars.

Bicycle helmet: Schwinn Excursion Adult Helmet
Whether you're riding on the road or down deserted trails, it's important to wear a helmet. Not only is it a legal requirement in some areas, but it could save your life in the event of an accident. Schwinn makes a range of adult bike helmets that are of excellent quality.

Lights: Malker Bicycle Light Front and Rear Set
If you'll be riding your bike in low-light conditions, bicycle lights are an absolute necessity. These inexpensive front and rear silicone bike lights attach to your bike without the use of tools and are great for occasional use. However, if you ride your bike after dark for hours every day, you might want to invest in a sturdier option.

Bottle holder:Ibera Bicycle Water Bottle Cage
It's important to have easy access to your water on long bike rides, especially on hot days. This simple yet effective aluminum bottle cage from Ibera is an excellent option and comes with the bolts needed to mount it.

Women’s Schwinn bike prices

Inexpensive: These women's Schwinn bikes cost between $300 and $500. Most cruiser, commuter, and mountain bikes fit into this price range, plus some hybrids and the most basic road bikes.

Mid-range: These women's Schwinn bikes cost from $500 to $1,000. You'll find top-quality cruiser, commuter, mountain, and hybrid bikes at this price point, plus a couple of mid-range road bikes.

Expensive: High-end women's Schwinn bikes are priced between $1,000 and $5,000. These expensive bikes are exclusively road bikes, most of which are high-performance bikes suited to the most avid road cyclists.

You can buy tandem women's Schwinn bikes if the idea of riding on the same bike as a friend or partner appeals to you.

  • Consider how and where you'll be riding your bike. If you want a simple bike to ride to work, a cruiser or commuter bike is ideal, but it won't get you far in serious off-road conditions. For those, a mountain bike should be your top choice. Ultimately, how you use your bike will determine the best model for you.
  • Check what type of brakes your chosen bike has. For general cycling, caliper brakes, V-brakes, and cantilever brakes are just fine, but for high-performance cycling and off-road cycling in muddy conditions, disc brakes are superior.
  • Find out how your women's bike differs from men's bikes. There's no real difference between contemporary women's bikes and men's bikes other than size (since men, on average, are taller than women). In fact, many Schwinn bikes are unisex. Some women's models do have a lowered top tube, but this is a throwback to when female cyclists wore skirts. It isn't necessary on a modern bike.

Q. How do I maintain my women's Schwinn bike?

A. Unless you do a lot of high-performance cycling, maintaining your bike is fairly simple. First, keep it clean using a non-abrasive soap and water to avoid any rust or other damage that can be caused by leaving wet mud and other dirt on your bike. Next, apply chain lube to the bike chain weekly. Depending on your bike, you may occasionally need to change the brake pads, cassette, or other parts, but if you aren't confident doing that, you can take your bike to a cycle shop or bike mechanic.

Q. Will my bike arrive fully assembled?

A. In most cases, your bike will arrive only partially assembled. It's easy enough to complete the assembly yourself with just a handful of tools, but if you're unsure, almost any cycle shop will be able to assemble your bike for not much money.

Q. I don't like the saddle on my bike. What should I do?

A. On most road bikes and mountain bikes, you'll have a narrow, firm saddle that offers more control, lets you change position more easily, and enables you to pedal more efficiently. On cruisers and commuter bikes, however, you're likely to find a wider, more cushioned saddle for comfort during a casual ride. Specific bikes have specific saddle types for a reason, but if you just can't get along with the one found on your bike, it's quite simple to switch it out for a new one.

5. Pure Fix Cycles Glow in the Dark Fixed Gear Single Speed Urban Fixie Bike

Amazon Link

Pure Fix Cycles is one of the favorites of bike riders everywhere due to their versatility, durability, and tolerance to less than ideal road conditions. The simplicity of these bikes are also ideal for those who wish to cycle for fitness, for fun, or to commute rather than drive.

Getting in shape is not just for the day. Many people ride their bikes at nighttime after work and while there are biking safety features so that riders can remain visible to drivers at night, this road bike by Pure Fix Cycles is special in that it is one of the few Glow in the Dark models available.

This single speed urban fixie is available in three colors: Zulu Glow White, Hotel Gloss Black/Glow Dark Green, and Kilo Glow Yellow/Black; and is available in three sizes: Small (50 cm), Medium (54 cm), and Large (58 cm).

The cycle is capable of glowing in the dark because of the solar-activated paint that begins to emit light after an hour of daytime sun exposure. This can keep you even safer when biking on the road, as it makes you more visible—however, it is still recommended that you wear reflective biking gear and/or safety lights.

This fixed gear single speed has deep dish wheels and an easily removable Radius front brake. Built to last, it features high-tensile steel framing and the fork is machine Tig-welded for a superior design and reliability.

The flip-flop rear wheel hub, which is what makes this bike a “Fixie,” means you can ride this bike as a fixed gear or single speed. This bike is popular for other reasons than the excellent paint job—Pure Fix Cycles uses high end components in their bikes, including the following name brands:

  • Headset: Neco
  • Chain: KMC
  • Tires and Tubes: Kenda
  • Zoom Seat Post
  • Oury Grips
  • Stem: Promax & Neco (depending on size)
  • Urban Saddle by Pure Fix
  • Platform Pedals by Pure Fix
  • Hubs: Lasered KT Quandos
  • Presto Valves

This Fixie bike is also very lightweight, with the Large/58cm size only weighing 32.55 pounds. As most women will typically purchase a Medium or Small, these sizes are even more lightweight. There is no bulk, a ton of cables, or crowded crankset weighing this road bike down.

Not only is this Pure Fix Cycles model fully functional on the road, but it is one of the best bikes in its price range. You can buy this Glow in the Dark Single Speed Urban Fixie bike on Amazon for $399. This model is the best women`s road bike under $500 and extremely popular and often goes out of stock, so buy it when you have the chance!

It’s perfect for recreation and fitness riding, but also able to handle triathlon competitions and other competitive events.

Our Rating

An increasing number of road bikes are being manufactured as unisex models, while also possessing numerous components that allow for maximum adjustments to ensure a custom fit.

Although many women do prefer these types of bikes, many still opt for an actual women’s bike that has some strategic designs and features that are better suited.

The Schwinn Phocus 1600 is a great example of a quality road bike that is made just for women, as it has a size and configuration that is more in tune with a woman’s measurements.

This results in a more comfortable feel, with improved efficiency.

This bike combines all of the elements that go into creating a road bike that is more than just a starter bike.

The Schwinn Phocus 1600 is not only an ideal entry-level road bike, but also a great choice for those who are progressing with their biking and are looking for the right bike to accommodate them.

FRAME: Aluminum

BREAKSET: Dual-pivot

SHIFTERS: 14-speed Shimano

WHEELS: Schwinn 700c

TIRES: Schwinn 700c x 25c

Schwinn is one of the most recognized and historic names in cycling, so it makes sense that they offer a high quality women’s road bike for such an economical price.

The sizing is pared down, which many women will appreciate. It is made for shorter legs and arms, and provides a road bike that doesn’t feel clunky and out of control.

The Phocus 1600 isn’t exactly flashy, but it does all of the little things right This starts with the bike’s frame, which is made from forged aluminum, and weighs a total of 26 lbs when fully equipped.

No, this isn’t the lightest bike in the world, but the weight is more than acceptable, and will feel very light to those who are used to inferior road bikes.

The configuration is well-suited for women who have had issues using unisex or men’s cycles. While the Phocus 1600 is very adjustable, the frame and handlebars are specifically designed for smaller body sizes.

The drivetrain features a mix of Shimano and Schwinn parts.

The rear derailleur is a Shimano Acera, so you get a high-end derailleur that offers very fast and accurate shifting, which is done via the Shimano trigger shifters.

The shifters are conveniently located, and easy to operate when in any riding position.

Schwinn Women’s Phocus 1600 shifters

The brakes are the usual dual-pivot style, and they are easy to control from their position on the drop-down handlebars. The brake pads are stock, and don’t offer the best stopping power, however.

The wheelset isn’t a big name brand, but the wheels and rims are surprisingly solid, and the spokes are designed in a way that is more aerodynamic.

The rear wheel has extra spokes that give better weight support, while also helping withstand bumps and irregular roads. This gives the rims some added durability, helping to withstand bending.

The included tires are a great in-between width, giving you both added stability and better speed. They also have a decent amount of traction, and help to absorb a lot of the shock and vibrations from the ground at higher speeds.

The bicycle seat and saddle post are a bit underrated, as they bring a higher level of adjustability and comfort than many other road bikes.

The saddle itself has some extra padding, along with expanded seat coverage. The seatpost uses a quick release lever that allows for quick adjustments on the go.

The Phocus 1600 has a few additional features as well. In addition to the more feminine paint job, the bike also has water bottle mounts that make it easy to add on water bottle holders for longer rides.

All of these aspects work together to create a very cable and versatile women’s road bike that can be used for everything from triathlons to commuter riding. In fact, it seems to be a favorite among female triathletes who were in need of a quality road bike that didn’t break the bank.

The biggest advantage that the Phocus 1600 provides is its actual size and configuration. This road bike is great for women who need women-oriented sizes, especially after encountering fit issues with previous bikes.

The pared down size can make a huge difference in overall feel and efficiency.

The shifting components are another great thing about the Phocus 1600. The actual shift action is incredibly effortless and quick, and the Acera rear derailleur is always accurate, avoiding the dreaded lag when shifting gears.

This is especially helpful in competitions and general hill climbing.

Having the ability to adjust the seatpost without using tools is a great aspect too. This allows riders to fine-tune their pedal positions when needed, including lowering the set when doing more casual riding. The toe cages are a step up from standard flat pedals as well.

The included brake pads of the Phocus 1600 are not the greatest. Even though the levelers and brake components are responsive and easy to use, the inferior pads require some extra pressure.

The tires aren’t the greatest either. You can instantly improve the bike’s ride and traction by upgrading the tires.

Buying Advice

The best thing you can do with this bike is order better brake pads with it. This is an inexpensive way to instantly upgrade the stopping ability.

A compatible water bottle cage is a good idea as well. If you’re ordering this bike online, you’ll need some extra money to get a proper tune-up at a local bike shop.

The crossover appeal is a big advantage with the Phocus 1600. It’s perfect for recreation and fitness riding, but also able to handle triathlon competitions and other competitive events.

Overall, this is a very solid women’s bike for a very, very reasonable price. Schwinn gave extra attention to all of the most crucial aspects, such as the shifting action, and general feel of the bike.

Serious cyclists can find a lot to love with the Phocus 1600, and beginners can provide themselves with a very capable starter bike if desired.

This is one of the better buys for women’s road bikes. We highly recommend the Phocus 1600 to anyone looking to get into road biking, but want something better than a basic entry-level bike.
