Jeep NSG370 Transmission Overview

Back in the early 2000’s, Chrysler was owned by Mercedes-Benz. This corporate union allowed the two other manufacturers to both share and co-develop new components. One of these cost – sharing car parts was the NSG370 transmission, which was built in Stuttgart Germany by Mercedes. This 6-speed manual transmission was used in a number of vehicles, including the Chrysler Crossfire and Jeep Wrangler. It also holds the distinction of being the very first Jeep 6-speed transmission. However, a number of NSG370 transmission problems have been reported. Two different bellhousings allow the NSG370 transmission to be used with either the Jeep 4.0L I6 or Jeep/Chrysler 3.7L V6. All of the gears, including reverse are fully synchronized, with 5th gear being the direct drive and 6th gear is overdrive. There is also a front bearing retainer with a throwout sleeve for a conventional throwout bearing.

Common NSG370 Transmission Problems

The NSG 370 uses bronze synchronizer collars for smoother gear changes, but that can lead to issues if the correct synthetic Chrysler MS-9224 manual transmission fluid (or equivalent is not used). They were also the subject of a technical service bulletin, thanks to a number of owner complaints about the transmission popping out of first gear while accelerating. The recommended repair was to replace the NSG370 1-2 synchronizer assembly and snap ring. This condition is also said to occur in reverse gear, requiring a new reverse gear assembly.

The Novak Guide to the

nsg370_transmissionThe NSG370 transmission was introduced in 2005 as the first six-speed to ever equip a Jeep. The transmission was direct evidence of Chrysler's then-league with Daimler.

NSG is an acronym for the German "Neues Schaltgetriebe"; literally meaning "new switching transmission" or "new manual shifting transmission".

The 370 transmission replaced the similar-strength NV3550 and the light-duty NV1500 in the Wrangler and Liberty vehicles. The 370 was installed in other Chrysler and Mercedes products, such as the Crossfire and ML Series.

Features

The NSG370 is a top-shifting, longitudinally-loaded transmission. It features six speeds with a direct drive fifth gear and an overdriven sixth gear. It is fully synchronized in all gears and has helically cut gears for all speeds.

Identification

The NSG370 has a cast aluminum case with generous ribbing. It's integral front bellhousing is available in a Jeep 4.0L I6 version and a Mopar 3.7L V6 version. The front bearing retainer has an integral throwout sleeve for a conventional throwout bearing.

Spline count for the input shaft is 10 splines x 1-1/8" diameter. The output shaft for Jeep applications has 23 splines.

Transmission Strength

nsg370_case_comparisonThe NSG370 is quite strong, featuring a 272 ft. lbs. input torque capacity, as claimed by the manufacturer. Output torque limits are between 1100-1300 ft. lbs., making it a good match for the NP231 and NP241OR transfer cases. The construction of the gears and visibly good level of engineering within the transmission would suggest that it should be quite durable.

However, individuals have reported problems with the 2005 model transmission popping out of reverse gear. This was widespread enough to garner the admission of DCx that an update may be needed, which consisted of a reverse gear kit (#05175903AA), itself comprised of a new reverse gear, slider and synchro ring, plus snap rings, an oil seal and countershaft seal plug, incidental to the tear-down required.

Transfer Case Compatibility

The 370 was factory married to the NP231, NP241OR and NP241J transfer cases. It features the common Jeep / Dodge 6-bolt transfer case mounting face for driver's side drop transfer cases. The 23 spline output shaft makes it compatible with the 23 spline version of the above transfer cases.

Engine Compatibility and Adaptability

kit_375_installed_rear_view

AMC / Chrysler Jeep

The 370 is factory compatible with the Jeep / AMC 4.0L I6 engine, when equipped with the right bellhousing. It is also compatible with the 3.8L V6 when equipped with its matching bellhousing.

GM

Chevrolet and GM Gen. III+ Small Block V6 and V8 conversions to the NSG370 are done with excellent success.

Put simply, a remanufactured transmission is a used transmission that has been returned to a like-new condition. Each remanufactured NSG370 is built in our state of the art factory by skilled Certified technicians. They test everything from metal thickness to spring tension before the process begins. And every “hard part” that doesn’t measure up to the manufacturer’s original specifications, gets replaced. By the time it’s finished, a reman transmission should perform exactly like a new one. Now let’s take a closer look at what sets a Street Smart Transmission apart from the rest:

All Gears & Shafts Meet OEM Specifications

All of the gears and the main shaft inside each remanufactured NSG370 that we produce, is carefully inspected for cracks and tested for straightness. Any hard part that shows signs of wear or damage is immediately replaced.

Upgraded Seals & Gaskets

To increase longevity, every remanufactured NSG370 transmission gets upgraded seals and gaskets that are made from a stronger heat resistant material. This upgrade is especially important for severe service (towing, off-roading, performance driving), where heat buildup can be a serious concern.

Durable Bearings

All of the new hardened bearings in a remanufactured NSG370 transmission not only perform better under load. They also create less friction for reduced operating temperatures and a longer transmission life.

Fully Inspected & Dyno Tested

Every remanufactured Street Smart Transmission undergoes multiple inspections by Certified inspectors throughout the build process. Once complete, your newly remanufactured NSG370 transmission is dyno tested to break-in all of the new parts, and to ensure that everything works correctly prior to shipment. And speaking of, shipping is always Free, and you also get a 3-Year/Unlimited Mile Nationwide Warranty that covers parts and labor for repairs that are performed by any licensed repair shop in the country.

Rebuild nsg370

Jeep NSG370 Transmission

The Jeep NSG370, a six-speed manual transmission, is a unit frequently rebuilt and sold by ZBAG. This transmission was introduced in 2004 during the era of Chrysler’s association with Daimler.

The NSG370 was first installed in the Dodge Crossfire, which shares the platform with the Mercedes Benz SLK320. This manual transmission was the first six-speed to be used in a Jeep, and was used in the Liberty and the Wrangler for several years, beginning in 2005 ending in 2010 in the Wrangler

The NSG370 is built with a cast aluminum case and substantial ribbing. The three transmission bell housing configurations mate the transmission to the 2.4 I4, 3.7L V6 or 4.0L I6 version.  This unit is equipped with a top shifter and contains a longitudinally loaded transmission with fully synchronized gears. The six speeds include a fifth gear that is direct drive and a sixth gear with overdrive. An integral throw out sleeve is located on the front bearing retainer for a conventional throw out bearing.

This manual transmission’s input torque capacity is 272 ft. lbs. according to the manufacturer, and output torque limits are 1100 to 1300 ft. lbs., making it a good fit for pairing with the NP231 and NP241 transfer cases, which the unit is commonly used with. The Jeep/Dodge six-bolt transfer case mounting design that is used is compatible with many other New Process/New Venture transfer cases. If you are looking to convert to a 6-speed manual transmission, kits are readily available from other manufactures for use with Chevy and GM Gen. III, and small block V6 and V8 engines and conversions can be easily done. Caution: Only the transmissions used with the 3.7 V/6 and the 4.0L I6 having the ten spline 1 1/8” diameter input have conversion kits available.

Jeep Gets a Six-Speed – the NSG370 Manual Transmission

As you may have realized by now there are some basic design and engineering differences between German and American transmissions. The German companies – ZF, Getrag and Mercedes – usually have higher interference-fit levels on bearings and gears. These closer tolerances mean that the amount of force needed to seat a bearing or gear is higher, and these manufacturers all recommend using an electric bearing heater to expand the gears and bearings so that they drop into place freely and tighten on the shafts as they cool.

This means that you need to follow some simple rules to handle the components safely. Bearings and gears should be heated to a minimum to 212° F and a maximum of 350° F. Use only an electrical heater; DO NOT USE A GAS TORCH. Be careful not to overheat the parts, and if you see any discoloration due to overheating replace the part. Make sure you use welding gloves when handling the heated components. Commercial purpose-built bearing and gear heaters are available, but you can use a quality toaster oven that is equipped with a temperature-control setting and a thermometer. This may seem to be a pain in the neck, but you will get used to it and enjoy how easily the heated parts just drop into place with little or no pressing or use of a hammer and installer.

The NSG370 is equipped with sintered-metal synchro rings and uses triple- and double-cone technology to get quality shifts. This also means that you need to use the correct factory lube fill for the proper coefficient of friction in the fluid so that the unit shifts correctly.

There are also a few special tools that make assembly quicker and easier, and they are available from the Chrysler essential-tools catalog. You can build one of these units without the assembly stand, but it will take two people to install the components in the case. One important fact about these transmissions: Every snap ring in these units is select fit. It is a good policy to mark each snap ring as to location or wire it to the component it retains for reassembly. If you get them mixed up or lose one, make sure to use the thickest snap ring that will fit.

As of this writing there is no aftermarket source of supply for the NSG370 parts, so the dealer is the only source I know of. If the volume levels increase, the aftermarket will tool up to create a source of parts. The gear train and other components are pricey, so make sure you do a thorough teardown and inspection and price all the parts needed to the customer.

For instance, the countershaft (#62 in the exploded view) sells as an assembly, and that assembly lists for $1,260. The most-commonly failed parts we have seen are the shift-fork assembly, on which the molded fork pads wear to the point of failure. The fork assembly (#63) lists for $330. Another common wear point is the reverse synchronizer and reverse gear. From experience this is an area that is always subjected to driver abuse. Most people are in a great hurry to get into reverse and will make that shift with the vehicle rolling forward slightly. This puts the weight of the moving vehicle onto the reverse synchronizer slider and the reverse speed gear. The pointing on the engagement teeth is very fine, and it doesn’t take much to round off the teeth and burr up the slider. To prevent warranty issues caused by bad driving, you need to explain to your customer that the only time to shift to reverse is with the vehicle at a complete stop.

This design takes a little getting used to, but rebuilding these will become easier as you see more of them. Jeeps’ being among the few vehicles besides muscle and sports cars in which people still enjoy shifting gears themselves and traveling off road should provide our shops with more work in the future.
