Easy Cricut Faux Leather Sunflower Earrings

It's that strange time of year between summer and fall, at least here in Florida. We see "fall" dates on the calendar, but it's still warm outside! I decided to make some sunflower earrings with faux leather and my Cricut to celebrate the transition from summer to fall.

Making earrings with your Cricut may sound tricky to do, but if you're wondering how to make earrings with a Cricut, but these earrings are actually very simple to put make.

You can cut faux leather with a Cricut Maker or Maker 3, or Cricut Explore Air 2 or Explore 3, or even the Cricut Joy! I'll walk you through how to make earrings with your Cricut step by step and share tips specific to the different machines along the way.

So if you're ready to try making these sunflower earrings with a Cricut, let's get started!

This page contains some affiliate links (which means if you make a purchase after clicking a link, I will earn a small commission at no additional cost to you). Read my full disclosure policy here.

Quick Links To Info In This Post

  • A Cricut cutting machine (or another cutting machine of your choice).I used the Cricut Maker, but you can use the Cricut Maker 3, the Explore Air 2 or Explore 3, or the Cricut Joy.

How to Make Sunflower Earrings

STEP 1 – Get the Free Sunflower Earring Template

Download the free sunflower earring template (Design #186) from my free resource library. You can get the password by filling out the form above.

STEP 2 - Upload The Sunflower Earring Template to Cricut Design Space

Save the zipped folder that downloads to your computer. You'll need to unzip or extract the files FIRST so you can upload them to Cricut Design Space.

making sunflower earrings with a Cricut

After you've uploaded the sunflower earrings SVG file onto the canvas, you will see in the Layers panel that this design has three different colored layers.

sunflower earrings on the Cricut canvas

The two yellow layers will cut from yellow faux leather. They are colored differently so you can see the different petals on your canvas.

The brown sunflower center layers will cut from glitter heat transfer vinyl.

To get the sunflower petal layers to cut on the same mat out of the same material, select both yellow layers and make them the same color.

Or you can also click on Color Sync menu at the top of the layers and then drag the shapes from one yellow layer to the other yellow layer so all four yellow shapes are the same color.

Cricut Design Space color sync

These earrings don't have pre-cut holes because I'll be making them with a hole punch.

Resizing isn't necessary, but if the earrings appear to be much larger than they should, resize them to 1 inch wide.

Then click on the green "Make It" button.

STEP 3 - Cut Earring Shapes from Faux Leather

The mat preview screen will show both cutting mats separated by color on the left hand side. It is not necessary to mirror the mats for this project.

I will cut the yellow faux leather mat first.

faux leather sunflower earring shapes in Cricut mat preview

Click on the yellow mat and make a note of the size material the shapes will need to cut from (in this case, about 1.75 inches tall and about 5 inches wide).

Click the "Continue" button.

Note: Cricut Explore Air 2 users will need to turn the dial to "Custom" before choosing Faux Leather (Paper Thin). Cricut Joy users can also cut faux leather! I have a tutorial on How to Make Earrings with the Cricut Joy with more specific instructions for Joy users.

On the Material Selection screen, choose Faux Leather (Paper Thin) as the material setting. If you don't have this material setting as a favorite, click "Browse All Materials" to search for it and select it. Then select "More" from the Pressure dropdown menu.

making sunflower earrings with a Cricut
faux leather material setting with more pressure in Cricut Design Space

Cut a piece of faux leather just slightly bigger than the size you noted in the mat preview screen. Cutting the faux leather down to size helps you get a better cut because it stays in place better on the cutting mat than a large piece does.

Place the trimmed piece of yellow faux leather "pretty side" down on a purple mat and press it down all over with your fingers. Then tape the faux leather down on all sides with blue painter's tape.

Make sure the Cricut's star wheels are off to the side before starting the cut so they don't leave indentations in the faux leather.

Load the mat into the Cricut by pressing the double arrows button. Press the C button to begin the cut. After the cut is complete and before unloading the mat, use a weeding tool to carefully lift the edge of the faux leather shape to see if the cut was complete. If not, press the C button again to repeat the cut.

checking faux leather sunflower earrings cut

Unload the mat and remove the faux leather sunflower earring shapes. You can trim any stray fuzz from the faux leather backing with small curved scissors.

trimming back of faux leather sunflower earrings

STEP 4 - Cut Glitter Heat Transfer Vinyl Shapes

Return to Cricut Design Space to cut the brown glitter heat transfer vinyl mat.

I like to use the Glitter Vinyl setting with "Default" pressure and then repeat the cut once if necessary.

glitter vinyl material setting in Cricut Design Space

Place the glitter heat transfer vinyl shiny side down on a green standard grip cutting mat.

cutting brown glitter HTV with a Cricut

Load the green mat into the Cricut and press the C button to begin the cut. When the cut is complete, unload the mat again and remove the glitter vinyl sunflower centers.

Weed away the excess heat transfer vinyl and cut the sunflower circles apart.

STEP 5 - Color the Sunflower Petal Edges

If the backing of the faux leather is white, you can color the edges of the flower petals and the backing if desired with a Yellow Sharpie marker. This makes the earrings look more finished from the side and the back.

coloring sunflower petals with a Sharpie

STEP 6 - Press The Sunflower Centers to the Top Petals

Once the glitter HTV circles are weeded and the faux leather petals are trimmed and colored, it's time to press the flower center on the top petal layer. In the next step, we will glue the two petal layers together.

NOTE: You'll want to do the pressing step first and the gluing step second - you don't want to apply heat to glued faux leather layers. The faux leather can blister and bubble.

Gather an Easy Press Mini or Cricut Easy Press, a heat pressing pad, and a Teflon sheet or piece of parchment paper for this step.

If the petal layers are curling, give them a quick press before pressing the center. I did this using my Easy Press Mini on the lowest setting and covering the petal shapes with a Teflon sheet. I pressed gently, moving the Mini back and forth for about 5 seconds.

You could also do this with a home iron on a low setting with no steam, or an Easy Press set to about 275 degrees.

sunflower earrings petals that are curling
pressing faux leather sunflower petals flat

Once the petals are flat, place the glitter vinyl flower center in the center of the smaller petal shape. Cover again with a Teflon sheet or cover sheet.

presssing vinyl flower circle to sunflower earrings

Press for 10-15 seconds, allowing the glitter HTV to adhere properly to the faux leather backing. Then carefully peel away the glitter vinyl cover sheet. Repeat with the second earring.

STEP 7 - Glue Petal Layers Together

Using Gorilla Glue with the yellow top or fabric glue, spread glue on the center of the bottom, larger petal layers. Place the smaller petal layer on top and press with your fingertip. Be sure to stagger the petal tips so they are spaced apart evenly.

gluing sunflower petal layers

Repeat with the second earring. If you aren't using a super glue type glue, press the glued sunflower earrings under something heavy for at least a few hours.

STEP 8 - Make The Earring Holes

I like to make the earring holes in faux leather earrings by punching a hole after the earrings are completely assembled. If you don't have a hole punch, you can use a sharp pointed tool like your weeding tool to gently poke a hole.

sunflower earrings made with a hole punch

STEP 9 - Attach the Earring Hooks

Now it's time to assemble your earrings!

You'll need small jump rings, earring hooks, and two pairs of flat nose pliers.

To connect the earring hooks to the sunflower earrings, you’ll first need to turn the bottom loop on the fishhook sideways so your earrings will hang correctly.

You’ll do this using one pair of flat nose pliers. While holding the hook firmly between two fingers, grip the entire earring loop between the pliers and twist your wrist 90 degrees. Repeat with the second earring hook.

Check out my post on how to make faux leather earrings hang straight for step by step directions and photos.

Now use flat nose pliers to open the jump ring. I like to use two pliers, one in each hand. Grip each side of the jump ring with a pair of pliers, making sure the opening in the jump ring is facing up (the twelve o’clock position).

Rotate one wrist forwards or backwards, so the jump ring creates an opening but doesn’t bend out of it’s circle shape.

When the jump ring is open, slide the sunflower earring onto the jump ring. Then slide the earring hook onto the jump ring and close the jump ring again.

attaching earring hooks to sunflower earrings

Pay attention to which side is the front of your earring as you do this to be sure your earring and hook are both facing the right direction.

That's it! The sunflower earrings are finished!

EASY Crepe Paper Sunflower FREE SVG+TEMPLATE

In this post, I’m sharing a step-by-step tutorial on how to make your own crepe paper sunflower. This is a super easy beginner-friendly sunflower craft with FREE SVG cut file for Cricut. And if you don’t have a Cricut, you can cut this out by hand as well using the FREE printable paper sunflower template. Let’s begin!

Hey, Cricut buddy, welcome to Cut N Make Crafts (not affiliate with official Cricut)! If you are looking for a free crepe paper sunflower tutorial along with an SVG cut file and a template, you have come to the right place, because today I’m sharing a complete step by step tutorial on how YOU can create these paper flowers yourself. Let’s begin!

crepe paper sunflower

Personally, I’m a huge fan of crepe paper flowers. They give a very realistic look to the flowers especially if you add some shade to them using Pan Pastels. Oh, this reminds me, I purchased some Pan Pastels ages ago to create a paper flower tutorial before I got busy with launching the SVG SUPERSTAR course. Working on this post, just reminded me of their presence in my drawer. Let’s hope I get some free time so I can work on a tutorial for the flowers. LOL!

Supplies needed for rose paper flower bouquet

Making these crepe paper sunflowers is extremely easy as all you need for this sunflower project is yellow and brown crepe paper, your Cricut, and some glue. These crepe paper sunflowers have flat bottoms so you can make these sunflowers to use them for wreaths or in a sunflower shadow box. Here’s a complete list of supplies needed to make these crepe paper sunflowers.

  7. Click on upload.
  8. Locate the file on your computer and upload it to Cricut Design Space.
  9. Insert the file on the canvas and click on “Make it”.
  10. Place each crepe paper on the respective mat and cut it out.
  11. Cut out the template for the brown crepe paper on cardstock then fold the brown crepe paper thrice, place the template on top and cut out the brown crepe paper.

Take any one of the petal cutouts and cut a 1 cm slit along the bottom side of the petal. Apply glue on either side of the slit.

Overlap both sides of the slits over the glued part. This will give the petal a 3d look. One by one prepare the rest of the petals in the same way.

Place the round paper on a flat surface; grab the petals and the glue for the next step.

Attach 8 petals on the round paper, making sure to keep an even gap between every 2 petals. These 8 petals form the outer layer of the crepe paper sunflower.

Now grab the other 8 petals and attach them on the round piece, inside the outer layer. This time, keep the petals of this layer between every 2 petals of the previous layer.

Take the brown strip, fold it into half and cut small and even fringes along the closed end of the strip. Start rolling the strip along its intact side.

Roll the entire strip and glue the end of the roll to secure it.

Attach the fringed roll piece on the center of the sunflower petals. Attach some leaves on the bottom side of the sunflower. And you’re done! Wohoo!

Looking for some FREE sunflower SVG for your cutting machine crafts and projects?

You’re in the right place! I’m sharing a bunch of free sunflower SVG files with you today!

If you have a cricut, silhouette, or any other cutting machine, you know how awesome it is when you find free SVG files!

So today, I’m sharing my favorite and free sunflower SVG files for you to download and use in your projects.

These free files can be used in so many ways! At the end of this post, I share some of my favorite ideas for using these files…

sunflower svg free

First, though, let’s talk about SVG files and what they are.

An SVG file, which stands for scalable vector graphic file, is a standard graphics file type used for rendering two-dimensional images.

SVG files generate clean graphics at any scale.

Just as important, they’re also SEO-optimized, usually smaller than other formats, and capable of dynamic animations.

SVG files are great for so many applications, such as logos and cutting machines (which I imagine is why most of you are here today).

I’ve shared some free Christmas SVG and Bow SVG in the past, and at the end of this post I’ll share some ideas on how to use these free SVG files.

There are so many programs out there that will open SVG files.

Since most of you will be opening SVG files for your cutting machines (I’m assuming), we’ll put our focus there.

SVG files usually come in a zipped folder and need to be extracted before you can use the files.

Once you download a file, you’ll need to unzip it before you can import it into your software program of choice.

To unzip your SVG file, double-click the folder and choose “extract all”.

You’ll be asked where you want your files to go. I often choose either my desktop or a folder on my computer (you can label a folder “SVG files” for easy retrieval).

Just remember where you extract your files as you’ll need to find them again.

Once you are in your design space (probably either Cricut Design Space or Silhouette Studio), you’ll upload your file and begin your project.

Before you begin, check out our pics for the best vinyl for Cricut and other cutting machines so that your project turns out as perfect as possible.

Ok, now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk about some of the best free sunflower SVG files!

While these are not free, Etsy has a huge selection of inexpensive (many under $3) sunflower SVG files.

Depending on your project, you may want to make this small investment for a file you can use over and over again!

While not free, this listing gives you a ton of sunflower SVG files (including a couple half sunflower SVG) for a great price!

You can use these for so many things!

Here's another free Sunflower Monogram SVG file!

It comes in four formats for whatever your diy project.

Did you find a Sunflower SVG for your next project? I hope so!

How to Use SVG Files

SVG files are so great and there are so many ways to use them!

Here are some of our favorites:

  • baby burp cloths
  • tote bags
  • christmas ornaments
  • mugs
  • water bottles
  • wine cups
  • glassware
  • t shirts
  • hats
  • blankets
  • wall art
  • mirrors
  • sweatshirts
  • canvas wall art
  • coffee tumblers
  • cutting boards

What can you add to this list??

how to make cardstock flowers

Materials Needed

  • Yellow and Brown Cardstock (bought this pack from Michaels on sale for $3)
  • Glue Gun + Glue Sticks
  • Silhouette Cameo OR Printable Patterns + Scissors

Instructions for Making Paper Flowers With A Cutting Machine

Step 1: Download the paper flower SVG cut files below and import them into Silhouette Design Studio.

Step 2: Ungroup the designs and arrange them to fit on your paper. Just move the extra petals off the cutting mat when it’s not their turn to be cut.

Step 3: Adjust the cut settings for cardstock and send petals to be cut. Repeat until all of the shapes are cut. The large circle is the base you’ll glue all the petals to and the brown scalloped pieces are the sunflower center.

*** You’ll need at least 8 petals of each size. Note that there are two slightly different shaped petals in each size. This is just to make the flower look more realistic. You only need 8 petals total of each size (so 4 each of the two shapes that are the same size.) ***

cutting flower petals in silhouette studio

Step 4: Curl the petals very slightly so they look more natural.

Step 5: Fold the bottom slit on top of itself and glue it into place. This is what gives the sunflowers their 3D shape.

giant paper sunflower free templateStep 6: Use hot glue to attach the large petals to the outer edge of the paper circle. Attach the medium petals, then the small petals the same way. Fold up the edges of the scalloped circles, then stack them together from large to small and glue together to form the flower center.

Instructions for Making Paper Flowers By Hand

Step 1: Download the free template and print it onto regular copy paper. Cut out the shapes. Trace around the pattern onto the back of the cardstock and cut out the petals. You’ll need 8 large petals, 8 medium petals and 8 small petals plus the scalloped circles for the flower center and the large circle to use as a base to put the flower together.

Here’s a quick 20 second video to show you how to put the petals together.

I hung my paper flowers up above a giant shiplap sign in my downstairs living room, but here are a few more ideas for ways you could decorate with these paper sunflowers:

  • Hang them on the wall above a TV or armoire or dresser or corner hutch.
  • Make a bunch to put around your front door (if you have a porch to keep them from getting wet)
  • Make an entire backdrop of sunflowers for a party.
  • Hang them above a window like I did in my craft room.

Sunflowers are one of my favourite flowers as they are so bright and cheerful, and they always make me think of summer and sunshine.

If you love sunflowers too, then why not make a 3D layered sunflower with your Cricut machine so you can enjoy this lovely yellow flower all year long?

This free sunflower cutting file comes in SVG, DXF, PDF and PNG file formats. If you’re using a Cricut machine then you need to upload the SVG version into Design Space.

The layers on the design come together beautifully to create a 3D effect.

How to cut layered sunflower Cricut file

This layered sunflower SVG has six layers. Four layers are the petals, and two are for the middle of the sunflower.

I used three different shades of yellow for my sample in the photos, which worked well as it gives more interest and depth to the design.

When you assemble it, start with Layer 1 and then build up the layers in numerical order using 3D foam pads or spacers to add depth.

I cut the sample you can see in the pictures at about 7 inches wide.

You can certainly make it larger than that, and you could make it smaller to probably around 5 inches in width, but I wouldn’t recommend going much smaller as the cuts in the top layer of the sunflower middle will become quite small and difficult for your Cricut to cut.

If you need to go smaller, I recommend leaving out the final layer and just making it a 5-layer design, then it should be fine to go smaller than 5 inches.
