BC Clark Jewelers

As a 120-year-old family-owned business, BC Clark Jewelers offers three locations in the Oklahoma City metro.  One of those locations has transitioned to the premier shopping district Classen Curve.  This project involves a 2-story 15,000 square foot space renovated to contextually fit within the existing architecture, while integrating features and details that enrich visual retail storytelling.

The existing exterior of the building offered limited interior views from outside.  To remedy this we introduced two large 9’-6” tall by 31’-6” wide storefront windows onto the west elevation.  Both windows include painted steel canopies, mimicking those seen throughout the shopping development.  A 16’-0” depth shields potential glare from the western sun and minimizes heat gain inside the store.

Traditionally BC Clark stores have an inviting classical style that incorporates a lot of ornate wood, sculptural detailing, and an over-the-counter sales approach.  For this new location it felt more appropriate to modernize the retail experience, which complements the surrounding architecture.  The challenge was to infuse ideologies of an established brand identity with our vision to develop a new retail design narrative.  Having been inspired by modern jewelry design, we wanted to create a concept that integrated the soft elegance seen in a lot of necklaces, bracelets, and rings.  Our design intent was to capture that essence and reinterpret it into architectural features and custom fabrications.

B.C. Clark Family

Born in Mississippi in 1869, Benton Clyde Clark worked on the family farm until the age of 18, when he moved to Abilene, Texas, to work at his brother's jewelry store. B.C. spent the next few years learning the jewelry and watch repair trade, before boarding a train bound for Indian Territory in 1892 with the promise of new land.

Landing in Purcell, Oklahoma, without a penny to his name, B.C. set up his watchmaker's bench in the corner of the local "five and dime" store. From this humble beginning, B.C. grew the business to a stand-alone jewelry store where watch repair and inspection was the key to his early success.

He met and married Flora Edwards in 1894, and their family grew to include six children. As Purcell's growth slowed during the 1920s, B.C. set his sights on Oklahoma City, which was growing by leaps and bounds. In 1929, he purchased a jewelry store in downtown Oklahoma City. B.C. remained actively involved in the business until his death in 1963 at the age of 94. The company continued to grow under the leadership of B.C. Clark Jr., who died in 2015 at the age of 101.

Today, the third and fourth generation of Clarks carry on the family business, and the company now has three locations in Oklahoma City. Jim Clark served as Oklahoma City Community Foundation Trustee from 2005-14. In celebration of B.C. Clark Jewelers' 100th anniversary in 1992, the family established a permanent endowment at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation to help them give back to the community. Each year, the family uses the fund to support a number of charitable organizations such as the BritVil Community Food Pantry, United Way of Central Oklahoma and Boy Scouts of America-Last Frontier Council.

BC Clark Jewelers

BC Clark Jewelers is a full-service jeweler that currently operates three stores in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The company, founded in Purcell, Indian Territory in 1892, claims to be "Oklahoma's oldest jeweler."[1] Today, the company operates three locations in Oklahoma City.

BC Clark is most well known for its "Anniversary Sale" jingle, which was originally created in 1956.[2] The jingle is played in advertisements for the retailer's five-week advertising campaign during the holiday shopping season, always starting during the evening on Thanksgiving Day. According to the company, the jingle "may be the longest continuously running jingle in the entire United States."[3] The jingle is seen as somewhat of a local holiday tradition by many from the Oklahoma City area who are used to hearing the mid 1950s recording during the holidays.[4]

BC Clark is the epitome of quality customer service. We designed my ring and Mitchell brought it to life-he was so responsive through everything and not once did I feel like I was being neglected or put on the back burner. One of my stones came loose and they fixed right away-we come here for anything from birthday presents to graduation gifts and my family has used them for years. If you want something done right and you want to be treated well BC Clark is the place for you! Sometimes things take a bit longer however, I would rather have something THIS IMPORTANT done right and look beautiful than someone who hurried through the process just to rush me a so-so product. Everything about this place is wonderful-highly HIGHLY recommend!!

Paul was so helpful in assisting my husband in selecting my engagement ring. It's a beautiful ring that I love. Paul also was great for helping us order our wedding bands and making sure we have the right inscription.

    We highly recommend BC Clark!

Worked with Brooke at the Penn Square location and she was such a doll to work with! She has a great memory and knew exactly what you looked at previously. My ring is GORGEOUS and to die for! I had my husband's band custom made after another ring I liked but thought it was too skinny for his big hands. They did an amazing job and it looked just the way I wanted it. I will definitely be going back for all my jewelry needs. They have beautiful pieces and amazing customer service. I love BC Clark!!!!

I used my grandmothers ring for my engagement ring. BC Clark was the only jeweler I would trust to resize the ring. They not only resized it but refinished it and cleaned it beautifully!!!!

BC Clark's is a wonderful place to get your wedding rings from! They are so helpful and willing to look at rings at all budget prices. They also donated 3% of the total cost to our church, where we also had the ceremony. It was wonderful! We love our rings, and we can go at any time to have the rings cleaned or buffed.

They also, of course, have the deal that if it rains one inch on your wedding day, your ring is free. Unfortunately, it didn't rain on our wedding!

My fiance purchased my engagement ring from BC Clark and we ordered our wedding bands from them as well and we are very satisfied with our purchases. I will say that it took months longer than they said it would to get our bands in after ordering them, so Im glad we ordered months in advance to avoid the stress of not getting them in time,

B.C. Clark Jr’s family was his proudest achievement

B.C. Clark Jr.

Benton Clyde Clark Jr. (B. C. Clark Jr.) passed away peacefully Feb. 4, 2015 at the amazing age of 101 years.
He was born April 4, 1913 in Purcell. He met the love of his life while attending Oklahoma City University and married Ruth Carroll on leap day, Feb. 29, 1936. They were married for 59 glorious years before her death on March 4, 1995.
He later married Jeroldine Zachritz and they enjoyed 11 years together until her death on Sept. 14, 2008.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, Flora and B. C. Clark Sr, and five sisters, Vera Evans, Mary Lee Clark, Floreta Tomlin, Clara Mae Stuhr, Sally Langston and daughter-in-law, Johanna Clark.
He was a man of great substance and character who was admired by all who had the privilege to have known him. His humble spirit and uncompromising integrity were legendary.
He most recently served as chairman emeritus of B. C. Clark Inc, a family-owned retail jewelry firm celebrating 123 years in business in Oklahoma. He worked in the family business as a young teenager up until his early 90s making an indelible mark on the success of the business.
He was endeared by his family of employees and will be missed by all whose lives he touched throughout his 101+ years on this earth. As a member of America's Greatest Generation, he served honorably in the Navy as a gunnery officer during World War II. The jewelry business has always been his first love, but he also gave back to his community in so many ways with his involvement in civic and church related work. He created endowment funds at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation and established the B. C. Clark Jr Chair endowment fund at the Meinders School of Business, Oklahoma City University.
He served as president of the Downtown Kiwanis Club of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma City Retailers Association, the Better Business Bureau of Central Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Retail Jewelers Association and the Last Frontier Council of the Boy Scouts of America where he established the B. C. Clark Jr. “Go To Camp” endowment fund. He was a past regional vice president of Jewelers of America and served on the boards of many other civic and business organizations and financial institutions.
Among the many notable honors received by B. C. Clark Jr are the “Pathmaker Award” from the Oklahoma County Historical Society, the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Oklahoma Jewelers Association, the “Wall of Fame Humanitarian Award” from the Oklahoma City Public Schools Foundation and an “Honorary Doctorate of Commercial Science” from Oklahoma City University, 2007 Alumnus of the Year -- Classen Highschool. and the “Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America.
He was a long-time member of the Fortune Club, Men's Dinner Club, and the Quail Creek Golf and Country Club. He was a founding member of May Avenue United Methodist Church and devoted member of Nichols Hills United Methodist Church.
But as much as he devoted his life to city, state and church he would have been the first to tell you that his family was his proudest achievement and the most important part of his life.
He is survived by his two sons: Dr. Benton C. Clark III and Jim C. Clark and wife Carolyn. Seven grandchildren who knew him as Papaw; Mayree Clark and husband Jeff Williams, Chris Clark and wife Teresa, Tiffany Clark Johnson and husband Charlie, Cheryl Clark Wolverton and husband Mike, Ashley Clark Schmidt and husband Andrew, Coleman Clark and wife Melissa, and Mitchell Clark and wife Laetitia. Also, twenty one great grandchildren: Braden Williams, Cale Williams, Bayleigh Clark, Hayden Clark, Jacob Clark, Jake Johnson, Brielle Johnson, Kate Wolverton Stair and husband Todd, Kris Wolverton, Matt Wolverton, Charlie Schmidt, Anna Schmidt, Nathan Schmidt, David Schmidt, Emmy Clark, Elyce Clark, Estelle Clark, Evelyn Clark, Owen Clark, Aaron Clark, Isaac Clark and many nieces and nephews.
The Clark family also wishes to acknowledge the remarkable and loving caregivers who devoted endless hours of comfort and attention to B. C. Clark Jr;. Linda Lewis, Laenita Cartwright, Bernice Brown, James Brown, and Carol Reynolds -- our “guardian angels” who became an essential extension of our family.
Donations may be made to Boy Scouts of America Last Frontier Council, 3031 N. W. 64th St, Oklahoma City, OK 73116.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015 at Nichols Hills United Methodist Church, 1212 Bedford Drive, Nichols Hills, OK 73116.
