Engine Masters' Steve Brule shares their recent test of a Holley Super Sniper paired with a Procharger blower.

When Steve Brule isn't busy co-hosting Engine Masters or dyno testing/tuning customer's engines, he's working with various manufactures to test and improve their products. The world still loves Gen I small-block Chevy engines, but they also love the modern manners of electronic fuel injection (EFI). So much so that companies like Holley started developing bolt on EFI systems for those looking to easily ditch their carburetors and move into the 21stcentury. One rock solid system they put on the market was the Holley Sniper kit.

But there's a new craving in town: boost. Yep, people have figured out that a heaping helping of forced induction can really add a ton of performance to their automotive mix. People have been blowing boost through carbs for years, but blowing big helpings of atmosphere through an EFI throttle body added complexity to the task. So, Holley came out with the Super Sniper Stealth system. To try it out, we grabbed a BluePrint Engines 377-inch small-block with forged Scat guts (3.48-inch stroke/4.155-inch bore) and a boost-happy 9.5:1 compression ratio. The short-block was topped with Brodix IK210 heads and the valvetrain consisted of Comp 1.6 steel rockers and their 236/242 .540/.540 113 LSA hydraulic bumpstick.

Is a thin wall thickness on a small-block Chevy dampener a problem with a supercharger?

To support the Super Sniper, the long-block was topped with a Holley Strip Dominator intake paired up with a Procharger F-194A blower. The F1 is capable of supporting well over 1,000 hp, so it, along with the short-stroke, big-bore small-block, would be perfect to test out the Super Sniper. But first we needed to address an issue that all supercharged small-block engines have: thin harmonic damper wall thickness.

To fix this, we hit up the folks at ATI for one of their stout 1.245-inch bore damper hubs (1.940-inch seal diameter). The seal fits a stock small-block timing cover and allows for the bigger damper hub. This increases the wall thickness to .347-inch, which is 35-percent larger! Here you can see the ATI hub next to a typical small-block damper.

All that is required to install this thicker, boost-ready damper is to change out the timing cover seal. ATI also offers balancers for small-block cranks that use a big-block snout. We did have to use a few leverage tricks to get the new ATI damper hub (PN: 916169) onto the crank snout.

Once the hub was in place, we bolted on the ATI damper (PN 917026). And yes, the damper hub had multiple keyways to keep it from spinning into oblivion on the crank snout.

With the ATI secured we installed the Prochager cog-drive pulley on the damper. Cog systems (sometimes called a toothed or Gilmer belt) cost a bit more, but they don't slip, and as a side bonus, they look pretty badass.

Centrifugal blowers love to rev, so for this build, Evan Perkins chose a single-plane high-rise Holley Strip Dominator intake with the required 4150 flange.

We could then finish bolting on the Procharger F-1A94 and give it a bottle of blower juice. Prochargers are nice because they are internally lubricated and don't require being plumbed to the engine.

With the Super Sniper Stealth in place, our 377 BluePrint small-block build was ready to head over to Westech Performance for some quality time on their Superflow 902 dyno.

Is there a boost-ready bolt-on EFI kit that can handle over 1,000 hp?

The Super Sniper Stealth is Holley's bolt-on big-power EFI solution and has been optimized for supercharged and turbo applications. Inside the body, which resembles one of its carb ancestors, are eight 100-pound injectors! This means the unit can support up to 1,250 hp and 21 pounds of boost. Jets, power valves? Please, this is 2021, and the unit is 100-percent laptop tunable.

Most of the Super Sniper is self-contained, but we did need to install this water temp sending unit.

For spark, we opted for an MSD Chevy V-8 Pro-Billet distributor (PN: 85551). The shaft is QPQ friction-coated, and the body is machined from billet 6061-T6 aluminum. We certainly don't want timing variations and issues when dealing with rpm and boost.

In the name of science, each header pipe got its own O2 sensor. This way the Westech crew and Holley techs could see how evenly the Super Sniper was distributing fuel to the eight cylinders.

With the Sniper line of EFI systems, the tuning is done with a laptop and a comfortable chair. After running through the Westech break-in procedures, the team started making power pulls.

The engine was run with different pulleys, gradually increasing the boost, power, and output.

The beauty of a centrifugal blower, like the Procharger, is that you can just change the boost level by swapping out the blower pulley and possibly the belt.

With the new pulley in place, we were ready to make another pull on the Superflow 902 dyno.

Our last pull netted 902 hp at 6,500 rpm and 733 lb-ft of twist at 6,200 rpm with just 14 pounds of boost. The engine easily had 1,000 hp in it, but the relatively mild, hydraulic roller cam and squishy valve springs couldn't rev past 6,500 without a trip to valve-float-city. Still, this showed how easy it is to blow 900 hp through a self-contained, bolt-on EFI throttle body.

Because we're never happy and always want "just a bit more," we plan on working over the 377-inch small-block with a solid roller cam and some beefier valve springs. Once done, we should be able to easily hit 7,500 rpm and smash well through the 1,000 hp barrier with a blow-through Holley Super Sniper and F-1A94 Procharger combo. Stay tuned.
