CarMax Employee Reviews for Automotive Technician

Not for real Techs

Automotive Technician (Former Employee) - Jacksonville, FL - March 20, 2021

Ahh Carmax, I started in 06 when it was in its Hay-day. Great management, benefits, etc. After the original ceo left, the higher ups just chipped away at the company. I kid you not it became what's best for the share holders not employees. This place is not for technicians don't believe me go work there, btw you will have to leave your hard earned tools at home and use thier community tools. Yeah that's right community tools. BS and back stabbing is every where, standards are not as they where. Pressure to beat that clock, just go look bays have a timer, remember it's a flow style shop. Managers are only concerned with what it takes to keep thier jobs , you are a number thats it. In the hay-day it was hard to get hired on, now turnover is 200 percent they are constantly hiring, real techs will know, please avoid this place. It isn't worth the Bs they will put you through, Good luck to those who take the Carmax challenge .

Retail Technician

If you’re going in as a retail Technician i will tell you this.. Its very hard to make money as a retail Technician.. Carmax now has a 90day warranty, so any customer complaints in 90Days carmax pays the tech for repairs.. this is call monthly budget that the managers for the service department have to keep under a certain amount Each month.. that includes not fixing the car or not paying the tech for him/hers work.. also customers think they bought a brand new used car, so getting a RO with 10+ concerns is very common on the retail side of carmax service.. you can spend half the day addressing all the concerns “not getting paid” because no problems found or the mangers just don’t wanna pay you for your time or for the repairs due to the monthly budget.. at my store in Las Vegas On West Sahara, Managment Doesn’t have your back or will talk down to you in front of other employees.. im sure managment else where could be different but not at West Sahara.. Managment plays favorites and if you’re in a team with a writer that is not the favorite, then your team is getting all the 90days and BS customer cars.. but to sum this all up! Its very hard to make money as a retail Technician at Carmax!

If you aren’t serious about your career, it’s a good place to work.

Management doesn’t care about you. You are a number, not a person. They lie about getting raises. No disrespect to my work friends intended, but the people who have been here a while are going nowhere and fine with being mediocre. If you want to work your way upwards here, you can only do it with dumb luck, or leave. Only 1 raise per year and it normally doesn’t cover cost of living. No raises for certifications despite what you are told in interview. Air conditioned shop is nice though.

ProsFree lunches

ConsJunk pay for techs. Typical big corporation nonsense.

High Stress Dehumanizing

Complete lack of management corporate is always looking for a reason to fire you before your 401k is vested so they don't have to pay. This company wants to control your personal life as well. it is very much like big brother out to destroy you as a humane being. Mangement will thretan to fire you on a regular basis for no reason. The carmax culture is that you as an employee are not to be trusted.

High stress - You need to fit into their "culture".

A very click-ish place to work. The managers play big time favorites, which makes a huge difference in your salary. They fire people constantly, especially older people nearing their sixty's that don't fit in their pressure cooker "culture" (age discrimination is alive and well at Carmax). Not a good place to work!! Nasty managers that pick on people they don't like. This is coming from an 11 year former employee.

Great benefits and associate development

Carmax focuses a lot of effort on developing associates and making sure they are happy. They hire for most positions with no experience necessary because of their thorough on-the-job-training system. Tools and equipment are provided by the company.

ProsPlenty of cook-outs, friendly associates

ConsPromotions can be given to almost anyone regardless of experience and competence

Management has no clue when it comes to the technician side

Voice and opinion is never heard even when you have more experience in the field than the person managing you it is ran like a corporation rather than a real shop when quality is over shadowed by cost.and your never paid for your experience feels more like your being robbed at knife point

ProsAir conditioned shop

poorly working management

the management is a bully type if you do not agree with everything as he or she sees it you will be ran out the door ASAP. you will not be awarded for hard work and doing what is needed to get cars sold and you will not get anything you are told when you start there

This is extreme, - Julia thought to herself. Julia's pussy just sprinkled streams of grease on the door. Julia's excitement was so great that the girl decided to add extreme and turned the key in the door. Now her room was open, and she was still moaning with her ass planted on the doorknob. Julia heard her sister walking back from the kitchen to her room, Julia's excitement grew as her sister's steps approached her room.

Why I Decided to Leave CarMax - (Story from a Former Employee)*

I did not understand where my gaze was directed. I just sat and smoked, not understanding anything.
