Earlier this year I wrote about why - as a size 22 woman myself - I believe the high street is failing all plus-size women. From the shops that don't even bother to stock above a size 18 (Topshop, Zara, Miss Selfridge I'm looking at you), to the ones that think a range of embellished kaftans are a year round wardrobe staple for girls above a size 16.

To add to my anger, New Look has been called out for charging more for their plus-size range after a customer noticed a pair of trousers in their 'Curves' range cost 15% more than their main collection.

Before anyone even tries to come at me with the argument that this is down to the use of more fabric, why are the exact same trousers in the petite range the same price as the main range? And why are tall, petite and maternity ranges not priced differently?

I reached out to New Look who did not offer an explanation for the discrepancy in pricing but did advise that they were now reviewing the pricing structure of their plus-size range.

“To ensure pricing differences like these don’t happen in future, we are in the process of reviewing the pricing structure of our Plus size collection in a way which works best for our customers and our business. We are proud of the ranges we offer to our Plus Size customers and value all customers, no matter what their body shape or size.”

This latest news comes after New Look closed 60 UK stores in a move to "restore long-term profitability".

New Look criticised by shoppers for imposing ‘fat tax’ on plus-size clothing

High street retailer New Look has been criticised by shoppers for allegedly imposing a “fat tax” across its plus-sized range.

The claims come after Maria Wassell, a retail supervisor from Kent, noticed a pair of trousers from the brand’s Curves range were being sold for 15 per cent more than an identical pair in the store’s main collection.

The mother-of-two says that she was “absolutely disgusted” to discover New Look’s Green Stripe Wide Leg Trousers were being sold for £22.99 in the Curves range but just £19.99 in their standard range.

Shocked at the price differences, Wassell investigated further by checking the retailer’s website for more disparities in pricing.

Here, she found that the Green Stripe Tres Jolie Slogan T-Shirt was being sold for £9.99 in the standard range and £12.99 in the Curves range – a 30 per cent difference in cost.

“It’s like I’m being discriminated against for being plus size when I’m only slightly bigger than average,” Wassell told The Sun.

“Why should we be penalised for being slightly bigger? A lot of retailers do this.

“Some retailers have claimed that plus-size clothes need more fabric and that’s why it costs more. That’s basically rubbish.

“I used to work for a plus-size brand so I do understand a lot about how it works.”

Now, the 43-year-old is vowing to boycott the store and claims that the retailer is alienating itself from plus-sized shoppers.

“It’s discriminating against those customers who are larger.

“Retail at the moment is a really hard business to be in and they’re not doing themselves any favours. New Look are already closing stores down.”

Wassell claims that she contacted the high street retailer regarding the issue and was told that “some products appear similar but may be slightly different.”

New Look added that they are in the process of reviewing the pricing structure of its plus-size collection.

“We are proud of the ranges we offer to our plus-size customers and value all customers, no matter what their body shape or size.”

The Independent has contacted New Look for comment.

What is the New Look ‘fat tax’, is their plus size Curve range more expensive and do other stores charge more for bigger sizes?

HIGH street clothing store New Look has come under fire for how it prices clothes in its Curve range.

More and more retailers are offering a plus-size or curvy range, alongside their standard sizes.

Shoppers spotted price differences in the clothes

What is the New Look 'fat tax'?

The store has been accused of levying a ‘fat tax’ after shoppers spotted items in their Curves range cost more than the standard sizes.

Items in their Curves range were found to cost up to 30 per cent more than identical pieces in their normal collection.

The disparity was found by 43-year-old retail supervisor Maria Wassell, from Kent, who branded the pricing structure “absolutely disgusting”.

In the wake of the furore the chain, which is closing 60 of its 593 UK-wide branches, said it would look into the issue.

Some prices were 30 per cent higher than the standard size

New Look released a statement saying: “We are in the process of reviewing the pricing structure of our Plus Size collection in a way which works best for our customers and our business.

"We are proud of the ranges we offer to our Plus Size customers and value all customers, no matter what their body shape or size."

Some stores claim that as more material is required to make a plus-size item, this should be reflected in the price.

Is their plus size Curve range more expensive?

The scandal emerged after it was discovered the same items in the Curves range cost more than the standard sizes.

Some clothes were found to be up to 30 per cent pricier than identical items.

The same item has two different prices

3

For example the same pair of trousers, the Green Stripe Wide Leg Trousers, cost £19.99 for sizes six to 16, but £24.99 for sizes 20 to 32.

The same blue vanilla red floral print tulip dress costs £18 in the regular range, and £24 in the Curves collection.

And a striped t-shirt was marked up 30 per cent, costing £12.99 for the larger sizes compared to £9.99.

Do other stores charge more for bigger sizes?

Many online and high street shops have been known to charge different prizes for plus-size clothes.

In the past, labels such as H&M, Missguided, New Look, Pretty Little Thing, River Island, Boohoo and Asos have either sold or carried different prices for the same item.

Lines, ranges and pricing does change and some of these items are either not for sale anymore, or have been changed so they are equal prices.

Despite the furore over the 'fat-tax', Tam Fry, the National Obesity Forum, said it was “reasonable” for shops to charge more for larger sizes.

He told The Times: "I think if a woman is paying more for her clothes because she is a size 18 or over that she will think seriously about staying in shape and that can only be a good thing.”
