OpenStudio Application Version 1.2.0 and OpenStudio SketchUp Plug-in Version 1.2.0
The OpenStudio Coalition is proud to announce the releases of OpenStudio Application v1.1.0 and OpenStudio SketchUp Plug-in v1.1.0. These releases are based on OpenStudio SDK v3.1.0 which uses EnergyPlus v.9.4.0.
Following an important announcement related to future development of the OpenStudio Application released in September 2019 (A Shift in BTO’s BEM Strategy: A New Future for the OpenStudio Application), this release marks the first major release of the OpenStudio Application and OpenStudio SketchUp Plug-in by the OpenStudio Coalition.
Going forward, the OpenStudio SDK will continue to be distributed and released by NREL and U.S. DOE two times per year, in April and October. The OpenStudio SDK includes the C++ SDK, Ruby API, Command Line Interface (CLI), OpenStudio Standards, and integrated EnergyPlus and Radiance packages.
The OpenStudio Coalition will be distributing and releasing new versions of the OpenStudio Application and OpenStudio SketchUp Plug-in as new versions of the OpenStudio SDK are released. Development of the OpenStudio Application has moved to https://github.com/openstudiocoalition/OpenStudioApplication and development of the OpenStudio SketchUp Plug-in has moved to https://github.com/openstudiocoalition/openstudio-sketchup-plugin.
OpenStudio Application Version 1.1.0 and OpenStudio SketchUp Plug-in Version 1.1.0 are the first major releases of these programs distributed by the OpenStudio Coalition. Notable changes include:
- Update OpenStudio SketchUp Plug-in startup scripts
- Allow changing OpenStudio Application location from preferences menu
- Distribute OpenStudio SketchUp Plug-in in SketchUp Extension Warehouse
- Bug fixes
Note that PAT and DView are not included in either the SDK or Application installers. You will need to install PAT separately which is distributed on the OpenStudio-PAT GitHub page and DView at the Dview home page.
Important note - OpenStudio Application v1.1.0 is based on OpenStudio 3.1.0 which is built using Ruby 2.5.5. SketchUp 2021 upgraded to Ruby 2.7.1 which is incompatible with Ruby 2.5.5. There is an enhancement request to upgrade OpenStudio's Ruby version to 2.7.1 for a future release.
1 ) Install OpenStudio Application v1.1.0 or higher
2 ) Install SketchUp 2019 or 2020 desktop client if not already installed.
3 ) Download openstudio-sketchup-plugin.rbz plugin
4 ) Launch SketchUp desktop client. Navigate to: Window -> Extension Manager -> Install Extension -> Browse to openstudio.rbz
5 ) A dialog box will prompt for root path of OpenStudio Application, e.g. 'C:\openstudioapplication-1.1.0'. It should automatically populate if the OpenStudio Application was installed to the default location.
6 ) SketchUp should now load the extension.

In this video series, we’ll be going through top 10 free plugins that have really upped my productivity while modeling and have made things way easier.
If you don’t know how to install Sketchup Plugins, follow this link.
All plugin download links will be available with each description below + I’ll be giving a brief demo of every plugin or extension as we go along. Kindly play the video for a better understanding of how each plugin/extension works.
1001 Bit Tools (the freeware version)
It has 39 helpful tools, some are very necessary if you model interiors like I do.
Since there are so many tools in this plugin, here’s a detailed tutorial for this plugin by Sketchup Essentials but I’ll show you a couple of things that I love about this tool in my video.
Front Face Tool
I bet you’ve seen me use it a lot in my videos and that’s because it’s important to have all faces positioned correctly (Here’s why).
If you have a face in an object or a component that is facing backwards, normally you’d have to select it, right click and choose ‘Reverse Faces’. If your object is complicated with too many polygons, that can take forever to fix.
Well, this tool is here for the rescue of your precious time; just click the button and start dragging your mouse over all backside faces.
This is witchcraft in display guys; thank the developer of this plugin for your saved time.
I have sentimental feelings towards this one because it was my first plugin to use ever and it literally saved me form getting fired from my internship back in 2014.
Let’s say we have a curved window opening + a straight rectangular window and we need those to fit. This scenario was similar to the trouble I was in when I was an intern.
At the time this looked like the end of the world for me since I didn’t know how to model a curved window to save my career, so I needed a shortcut.
How this beauty works:
- You need to mimic the curve of your desired bend by either drawing it or copying the line.
- Draw a straight line along the length of the object you want to bend. It doesn’t have to be the same length by the way, but all lines have to be parallel to the Red Axis which is the X Axis in Sketchup (The object you want to bend has to be either a group or component or this won’t work.)
- Select the Object, THEN click the tool button.
- You’ll see the tool’s instructions at the bottom left on your Sketchup window. It says to select the straight line first.
- Next you select the curve or bend.
It takes a few seconds or minutes, depending on how complex your model is, but you’ll see a green outline of your object over the bent or curved line.
Because it’s a mesh outline, you can’t really tell if your shape is bent facing the right direction, so take note that these ‘Start’ and ‘End’ labels match the ‘Start’ and ‘End’ labels on the original object.
If your shape is bent the wrong way around, you can use the ‘Up’ arrow on your keyboard to toggle the curve, and the ‘Down’ arrow to toggle the line.
To draw the new object, just press ‘Enter’ on your keyboard.
You can use this tool to bend literally everything to every shape.
Keep in mind that this isn’t a one-size-fits-all tool and that you need to be smart about choosing which objects to bend and how you bend them.
Round Corner tool
If you will choose one tool only out of all 10 in this video; this is the one to get, and in the video I’ll show you why.
Why this tool is important is because if objects were this sharp in real life they would be an injury hazard, so making edges smoother is a lot more realistic and gives your objects an overall polished look.
You can see the difference between the before and after on the table in the video; the whole model is completely different and when I paint it with material, it will render into a realistic table.
This single button plugin can save your whole model from a lot of glitches.
What’s so great about this tool is that you can inspect modeled or imported objects for errors that may lag, crash, or corrupt your Sketchup file and ruin hours of hard work. It fixes what it can fix and tells you what you need to fix yourself. These problems are usually highlighted in red; you just have to orbit or flip the object to see them.
To save time and not overwhelm yourself, make sure you only inspect complex objects as you create them or before importing downloads into your model. It’s also wise to save your progress before importing anything heavy or complex with problems, in case it causes a crash.
That’s it for part one of this video, hope these plugins prove useful to you and help you make the best of your time and skills as much as they help me. Stay tuned for part two with 5 more plugins and extensions coming soon.

Download the zipped podium_tools.rb file and then unzip it.
Copy the podium_tools.rb file to this location on Windows - C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\SketchUp\SketchUp20xx\SketchUp\Plugins\SU_Podium_V26\plug_in\ and then remove the podium_tools.rbe file.
Mac - Copy the podium_tools.rb file to this location - /Users/username/Library/Application Support/SketchUp 2020/SketchUp/Plugins/SU_Podium_V26/Plugins/ and then remove the podium_tools.rbe file.
Podium Extras is included is included in the installation of SU Podium V2.5. It is also integrated into SU Podium V2.6 and is no longer a separate extension in V2.6.043 and above.
The features packaged in the Podium Extras or in the SU Podium V2.6 Tools menu include: Nudge, GenerateAll, Light Fixture Outliner, Reset edge smoothing, and CubicVR.
Read about PodiumExtras features here.
These first six plugins (Nudge through Reset Edge smoothing) are now included in the latest SU Podium V2.5.x and in SU Podium V2.6 Tools menu.
Nudge allows you to translate, scale, or rotate groups and components along any axis. Although specifically designed to randomise perfectly aligned, scaled and rotated components like plants and furniture, it can also be used for a series of precise incremental transformations. Read more here.
GenerateAll Scenes is a feature that lets you automatically generate a Podium render script for every scene in your model. Scripts can then be rendered from OOPR or Podium Server, at a later time, or from a different computer if necessary.
GenerateAll requires V2.5 or V2.6 to run. Please update Podium to the newest available build for your SketchUp version to use GenerateAll; click here to read more about GenerateAll and download Podium updates if needed.
CubicVR works in SU Podium V2.5 and V2.6.
CubicVR is an alternative way to create SketchUp non-photo-realistic Panoramas from six cubic images. It's also very useful for creating SketchUp sketchy line style Panoramas to use as overlays to provide line edges for Podium panoramas. Read more about CubicVR here
Note:Please update SU Podium to the newest available build for your SketchUp version if you want to create Panorama overlays.
CubicVR is now included with SU Podium V2.5/ V2.6
LightFixture Outliner or LFOutliner lets you automatically analyse the contents of your light fixtures from Podium Browser. It will then allow you to easily find specific Light Fixtures and their light sources and change the power level of the omni or spot lights in the Light Fixtures. It bypasses the need to use SketchUp's Outliner.
Click here to read about LFOutliner and learn more about how to operate this feature that is included in SU Podium V2.5 and V2.6.
Reset Edge Smoothing
Reset Edge Smoothing for SU Podium V2.5 and V2.6.
Reset Edge Smoothing, will reset all the materials in the SketchUp model to a Podium material setting of Low Edge Smoothing. The program also contains a way to undo the reset and also a way to reset all materials to Default Edge Smoothing. Read more about Reset edge here.
Free plugins - Install using SketchUp extension manager.
EditInPlace for SU Podium and SketchUp users
EditInPlace lets you overcome SketchUp's clipping plane by modifying a component or group definition in a separate SketchUp window. After making your modifications to the component/group definition, EditInPlace lets you update instances of the selected definition in the original model. Read more about EditInPlace here.
Note: You do not need to download and install EditInPlace if you have SU Podium V2.5 or V2.6 or SU Animate 4.x.
OmniGridV2 for SU Podium.
Omni Grid is a plug-in for SU Podium that allows you to create a grid of point lights or omni lights above or below a planar surface (SketchUp face). By creating a grid of omni lights Omni Grid creates a relatively even source of light over a wide space. It is best for interior rendering. A superior even source of light is LEM in SU Podium V2.5/ V2.6
Once you have installed OmniGrid, OmniGrid will be available from the context menu in SketchUp when you select a face.
Note: You do not need to download and install SU Grid if you have SU Animate 4.x.
Involute Gears - Create 3D true involute gears in SketchUp. This program will create involute spur gears with or without shaft keys. After installing the .rbz, go to the Draw menu. You will see both Involute Gear and Key Involute Gear options. Be aware - the involute gears get placed at 0,0,0. They are grouped so you can move and rotate them. Push/pull on the face to make them 3D.
Once the install is complete, SU Gears will be available from the Tools menu in SketchUp.
Please note: Cadalog does not provide support for Cadalog gear. This is a free plug-in.
Podium Browser component library — Limited free content; $79 for full license.
Podium Browser is a premium content library containing thousands of 2D and 3D render-ready components. Podium Browser includes with a limited amount of free content—one or two items in every category, and costs $79 for a full license to over 20,000 additional components and materials. Podium Browser is included with SU Podium V2.6 so please do not purhcase Podium Browser if you have SU Podium V2.6
Note: Podium Browser is automatically installed with SU Podium V2.x and above. Furthermore, if you only want to use Podium Browser and not SU Podium, you can download the free trial of SU Podium V2.x and continue to use Podium Browser after the Podium V2.x trial has expired.
You have three options if you want to use Podium Browser:
- Install SU Podium V2.x which includes Podium Browser. The easiest option is to install SU Podium V2.x, if you do not have it now, which includes Podium Browser. Install the free trial version of SU Podium V2.x from the free trial page.
Install Podium Browser by itself: If you do not want to use SU Podium, please download and install the stand-alone Podium Browser RBZ file. Download Podium Browser here.
- Use the web-only version: The web only version can be accessed at this URL: Podium Browser web-only version.
It is recommended that to use IE, FireFox or Chrome browser for the web only version. Safari will not download .skp files properly.
Should I download the .rbz file or the Zipped .rbz file? It depends on what Browser you are using.
There are several SketchUp .rbz file plug-ins on this page. Each one has a .rbz download link and a zipped. rbz download link. Which one should you download before installing from inside SketchUp?
If you use Internet Explorer or Safari as your browser, it's best to download the Zipped .rbz file. Then unpack the zipped file and you will obtain the original .rbz file.
If you are using FireFox or Chrome, download the .rbz file but make sure you context click on the download link and choose Save Link as...
Download and Installing the .rbz file directly (not the zipped .rbz versions)
- Download the .rbz file and save it to your download folder.
- To download it's best to right click on the download link and use the option "Save Link As... "if that is available.
- After downloading, Open SketchUp and go to SketchUp Preferences. Pick Extensions. Then Install Extensions. SketchUp default file format for extensions is .rbz.
- Select .rbz from your download folder.
- Install the Extension automatically. Once this is complete,plug-in will be available either as a menu item or a context menu item.
Download and Installing the zipped .rbz file.
Some browsers such as IE will not download .rbz files correctly. These browsers will convert the .rbz to .zip files which is not good. Therefore we have created a .zip file which contains the .rbz file.
- Download the zipped .rbz file and save it to your download folder.
- Then unzip the .zip file. You should see a .rbz file.
- Open SketchUp and go to SketchUp Preferences. Pick Extensions. Then Install Extensions. SketchUp default file format for extensions is .rbz. Select the .rbz to install the Extension automatically.
- Open SketchUp and go to SketchUp Preferences or Extension Manager. Pick Extensions. Then check off the extension name in the Extensions list. This will disable the plugin from automatically loading into SketchUp
- Quit and Restart SketchUp
- At times you will need to manually remove the plugin and it's related folder from the SketchUp\Plugins folder especially if you need to install an updated version.
